Chapter 4

Author: Perfect Timing
"James, you need to keep your wife in line," Samantha said, speaking like she owned the family. "What does she mean by calling us strangers? Making a public scene—does she think that's amusing?" Her glance at James alone was enough to make a command of it.

James's older brother, Nick Carter, weighed in, irritation lacing his voice. "You married James. You're a Carter now. How can you call us strangers? That's completely inappropriate."

Concerned about saving face, James snapped at me, "Lyndis, stop making a scene. It's not like you're short on money. Why are you acting like this? Just pay the bill already. Don't make things more embarrassing."

I let out a mocking laugh. "I'm absolutely not paying. First, I never agreed to treat you. Second, I didn't eat a single bite. You dragged me here—I'm only here to keep you company."

Cami's expression darkened as she slammed her hand on the table. The dishes rattled, the sharp sound cutting through the room.

"You just married into this family, and you're already stirring up trouble like this. It seems like you've got no interest in building a real life with James anymore."

Samantha quickly added, "I've heard Lyndis buys handbags that cost tens of thousands without batting an eye, yet when it comes to treating her family to a meal, she's suddenly so stingy!"

"'My family'?" I repeated, my voice laced with sarcasm. "Which one of you is my family? How come I didn't realize I had family here?"

My words finally pushed James over the edge. He stood up and shouted at me, "Are you done yet? It's just one meal! Do you really have to make the whole family look bad?"

It was the first time he had ever raised his voice at me. In seven years of dating, he had always been gentle and refined—nothing like the man standing before me now.

I rose to my feet as well, meeting his gaze with cold indifference.

"James, can't you tell? I don't want to be with you anymore."

Cami could no longer sit still. She stood up and sneered at me.

"Don't try to scare my son with that trick. Everyone knows you were the one chasing after him, begging him to marry you! You love my son to death. Otherwise, why would you marry him without asking for anything?

"Lyndis, put away that spoiled young-lady temper of yours. I advise you to stop this nonsense. If James gets angry and leaves you, I won't stop him!"

I burst out laughing, genuinely amused. "There's no need for me to beg him. I'm the one who doesn't want him anymore. So you can figure out how to pay for this table yourselves."

Seeing the situation spiral, the server stepped in cautiously.

"Please decide who will settle the bill as soon as possible. If not, we will have to call the police."

At the mention of the police, Samantha grew even more unsettled.

"Lyndis, if a single meal ruins your marriage with James, you'll regret it for the rest of your life!"

Our raised voices had already drawn the attention of other diners, who began peeking out from their private rooms to watch the commotion.

Watching their mixture of panic and anger, I felt a quiet thrill of satisfaction.

"Samantha, don't worry about me—worry about yourself instead. Tell me, if I show them this, do you think you'll still be able to stay in the Carter family?"

I walked over to her and pulled up a photo on my phone, holding it out for her to see.

The moment she glanced at it, her face drained of color. Panic flashed in her eyes as she lunged forward, trying to snatch my phone.

Nick broke down, sobbing as he looked at me with gratitude. "Lyndis, you're a good person. Our whole family was deceived by that vile woman, Samantha."Please, help me one last time. I want to live—I want to live properly. I'm begging you!"With a thud, Cami suddenly dropped to her knees in front of me."Lyndis, all of this—every bit of it—is Samantha's fault. I'll drive her out of this house! I'm begging you, help our family. As long as you can save Nick, I'll do anything you ask."James also pleaded, "Lyndis, for the sake of everything we've been through all these years, can you give me one last chance?"His eyes reddened, tears spilling down his face. He looked pitiful. But my heart didn't waver in the slightest. I coldly pushed away the hand he tried to wrap around me."A family like yours—rotten to the core and full of schemes—I will never look back. Give up on that idea. Seeing your family brought to this disgrace only amuses me."The commotion grew so large that the hote

Nick snapped. He lunged forward and drove a punch straight into Samantha."Bitch! You're that eager for me to die? I trusted you! I treated you so well!"She collapsed to the floor, blood streaming from her nose. Sobbing, she still insisted she'd done nothing wrong."I didn't want to hide it from you, but your illness can't be cured! Telling you would only make you miserable and die even sooner!"Enraged beyond reason, Nick rushed at her again, only to be restrained by the onlookers. He turned to Cami, his voice breaking as he shouted, "You're my mother! And you didn't even want to treat my illness? I don't have a mother like you!""Nick, this is for your own good. I had no choice," Cami cried. "It's not that I don't want to treat you—your illness can't be cured!"The crowd erupted in outrage."Even so, you can't have your younger son take over both households—what kind of twisted thinking is that?"Yet, Cami still believed she was in the right. "I did it for the sake of this

James frowned, suspicion clouding his eyes as he looked at me."Because," I said lightly, "your mother is counting on you to carry on both family lines.""Bullshit! Lyndis, say another word of that crap, and I'll rip your mouth to shreds."Samantha shoved my shoulder viciously. I swung back without hesitation and slapped her across the face."I'll rip yours to shreds."I didn't hold back. The force of the slap left five clear finger marks on her cheek and knocked her straight to the ground.Cami panicked, her shoulders trembling slightly. "Lyndis, I know you don't like me, but you can't just say things like that!"Not only were they shameless, but their denials were just as stubborn. Unhurried, I took a voice recorder out of my bag."I'm not like you—running my mouth without evidence. I don't speak without proof."I turned to Nick. "You don't know this yet, do you? You're terminally ill with cancer. And your mother and your wife have no intention of treating you.""They think

"That's right—we never got around to registering the marriage. I insisted on a premarital health check, which delayed things by a day. And luckily for me, that one day was enough to see your family's true colors."I took out a backup phone and played a video for the onlookers."Everyone, take a good look. This footage records everything from the moment we entered to the end of the meal, including when the server came in. In the video, I didn't take a single bite, and I never once promised to pay the bill."People crowded forward to watch.Samantha rushed over, trying to snatch the phone, but I shoved her aside. "Feeling guilty? Stay away from me. You already smashed one of my phones—get ready to pay for it."Cami's attitude shifted instantly. She softened, pleading humbly, "Lyndis, don't do this. Whatever it is, we can talk it through as a family. We may have ordered a bit too much for this meal. I promise it won't happen again."Please don't let this cause a rift between you and

Samantha hurled my phone to the ground. The screen shattered on impact, going black instantly. She let out a breath of relief, then, flushed with anger and embarrassment, jabbed a finger at my nose, spittle flying. "Lyndis, you're truly vicious—tricking us into coming here to eat and then refusing to pay. What are you playing at?"Cami grew even more agitated, crying louder. "I've lived to this age and never been so humiliated. You've only just entered our family, and you're already humiliating us like this!"Nick's face darkened as he pushed the responsibility onto James. "James, she is your woman. Are you going to control her or not? Are you just going to let her keep making a scene?"He emphasized each word deliberately. "You can't manage a woman with just words."The implication was clear—he wanted James to hit me.I stepped forward, standing directly in front of Nick, my gaze sharp. "Are you telling your brother to hit me? Do you not realize that inciting someone to intentio
