Chapter 2

Author: Asteria
On the third day of the trial run, the Fontana family hosted a family dinner.

Madre had a servant tell me to bring the emerald brooch passed down to the Donna of every generation.

That brooch was pinned to my chest by her own hands on my wedding day. Yet I knew she had always looked down on me; she favored a mafia-born princess like Isabella, and even after we were married, she kept trying to set them up.

On the day I first visited the Fontana estate to meet the family elders, Madre had told a room full of people that a girl from an ordinary background was unworthy of the Fontana name.

Luca had held my hand, his tone calm yet unyielding, "Madre, with all respect, no one picks my wife but me."

If Luca hadn't insisted on marrying me back then, this symbol of the Fontana matriarch would have never ended up in my hands.

Recalling that moment now only felt utterly tragic.

I tightened my grip on the jewelry box. Perhaps today would be the perfect opportunity to return this brooch to its rightful owner.

When I arrived at the estate, Isabella was already seated next to Luca. There was no seat reserved for me along the long dining table. The butler had no choice but to drag out a temporary chair and place it at the very end of the table.

Watching Isabella laugh and talk with him, I remembered that at last year's family dinner, when they first let Isabella take my seat, I had turned around and left the room.

Luca had chased after me and pulled me into an embrace, "I promise, the spot next to me always belongs to you."

Yet this year, I did not even have the right to sit beside him.

Maybe I had a sour look on my face, because Madre's sharp eyes swept over me, "Don't be so sensitive, Viola. Isabella is playing the Donna tonight, so the seating should match the game."

Luca smiled and nodded at Madre, then instructed the kitchen to tailor the menu to Isabella's tastes.

I was severely allergic to pine nuts. Yet after all these years of marriage, bits of pine nut still garnished nearly every dish on the Fontana table. In the beginning, Luca would remind the cooks to watch out, but over time, he just told me to avoid it myself.

However, because Isabella disliked olives, olives were strictly forbidden at the Fontana table. There was a hint of olive oil in the salad. Luca immediately ordered the butler to clear it, "Take it away. She can't stand the smell."

I sat there, drinking my wine in bitter sips.

Before taking the family portrait, Madre suddenly ordered me, "Give the brooch to Isabella to wear, so the photo looks right."

Isabella quickly waved her hands in refusal, "Oh, that wouldn't be right." Yet her hand hovered in mid-air, never truly pulling back.

Before I could say a word, Luca reached out and unpinned the brooch himself.

The sharp pin dragged against the fabric. He did not even check on me; he only looked down to make sure the brooch was not scratched.

Then, he personally pinned it onto Isabella's chest, "It's just a brooch, Viola. You'll get it back in a few days anyway."

During the photo shoot, Madre sat in the front row. Behind her, Isabella stood right beside Luca. Meanwhile, I was placed at the very outer edge, practically cut off by the camera lens.

The photographer asked everyone to squeeze in closer. Luca intentionally wrapped an arm around Isabella's waist. After the shoot, his hand still rested on her. He wore a smug look on his face.

I knew he waited for me to speak up and stop him. But I looked away and turned toward Madre, "Madre, let Isabella keep the brooch. It should have belonged to her all along."

Luca's expression darkened, and a faint smirk crossed Madre's lips, "So you finally realize you're not worthy of Luca. If you are that eager to give away what took you years to earn, then fine."

The photo was quickly sent out to be printed, set to hang in the estate's long gallery.

Relatives unaware of the truth smiled and remarked, "Everything is finally in its place."

Someone even asked, "So when are Luca and Isabella having a proper wedding?"

Madre did not bother correcting them. She raised her glass, giving Isabella a knowing nod as a silent approval.

Amid voices praising how perfect Luca and Isabella looked together, I slipped away quietly. Nobody noticed.

It was not until the banquet ended that Luca finally noticed I had not returned. He sent me a text.

[What kind of game are you playing now? I'll give it to you, your acting's getting better. Let's see how long you can keep this up.]

I did not reply.

What he did not know was that I was erasing every trace of myself left within the Fontana family, until I walked out of his life for good.

Through mutual acquaintances, I eventually heard whispers of how things turned out back at the Fontana family.Luca never ended up with Isabella.Isabella packed her bags, left Naples, and was never seen again. The clique of friends who placed those annual bets drifted apart, fractured beyond repair.Luca still lives in that grand estate, but it no longer has a lady of the house. He introduces my portrait to everyone: "Viola Rosso, my one and only Donna. She is the love of my life. I was the biggest fool in the world, and I lost her."Someone asked him why he still kept his ex-wife's belongings, why he still talked about me to everyone. He said, "She is no longer in my life, but at the very least, she cannot be missing from my memories."I once ran into him at an exclusive international trade summit. He was sitting in the audience; I was the keynote speaker on stage. When my presentation wrapped, he clapped harder than anyone in the room.As the crowd dispersed, he caught up with me at

The very next evening, Luca gathered the Fontana family's most critical business partners at an exclusive private club. For the first time in his life, he stood before the elite crowd and admitted the truth."The person who built this business alongside me, who brokered every major contract you signed, was Viola Rosso. She is, and always has been, the true Donna.""Isabella was never the Donna of the Fontana family. I merely lent her that title, using her as a pawn to provoke my wife."Within hours, the truth about the notorious "Seven-Day Game" and the long-running betting pools spread like wildfire through every major family. The inner circle who had taken part in those bets went into hiding almost overnight. A few even reached out to me through mutual contacts, desperately begging me to clarify that it was "just harmless banter among close friends."I didn't waste a single word on them, blocking every last number.Isabella's reputation was utterly ruined. It didn't take long for the Fontana family's business empire to show its cracks.Suppliers were suddenly demanding renegotiated terms, and major port authorities insisted on dealing with me, and only me.Within days, a tidal wave of crisis hit the family. Only then did Luca finally suffer the agonizing realization that every major deal closed over the last few years had been driven by my hands behind the scenes. I just never boasted about it.Worse yet, Isabella was rapidly burning everything to the ground. After taking over my responsibilities under Madre's orders, she threw herself into the work with naive enthusiasm. But business requires far more than blind ambition. She hastily restructured the revenue split for a high-stakes port deal, instantly insulting a long-term partner. Then, she recklessly agreed to an exorbitant rate from a supplier, leaving Luca to step in personally, pay millions out of pocket, and smooth things over. The mess she made in a mere two weeks was enough to

Isabella had only sprained her arm.By the time Luca rushed back to the estate, the family doctor had already finished examining her, confirming there were no broken bones and that a few days of rest would do the trick. Her eyes were red as she reached out to grab his hand. "Did you really hand out the divorce filing with Viola?"Luca stayed dead silent for a long time, then gave a heavy nod.An unmistakable gleam of triumph flashed through Isabella's eyes."Luca... this is amazing! I can't believe you did that for me! You're finally free!"She looked up at him, her voice dripping with vulnerability. "Can I ask you something? During those seven days... was there ever a single moment you actually saw me as your wife?"Luca offered no answer. His mind was suddenly flooded with the realization that over the past six months, Viola hadn't even reached out to ask about him once.He had spent months believing she was just waiting for him to break.Only now did it hit him with sickening clarit

At nine sharp the next morning, Luca showed up at the family law firm right on time.He was wearing a sharp, dark gray tailored suit and clutching my wedding ring tightly in his fist. The moment he saw me, his expression relaxed into a calm demeanor. "Sleep well last night?"His tone was so natural it felt like we'd just had a routine spat.I didn't answer, taking my seat directly across from the lawyer.Handling our affairs was the family's long-time legal counsel. He slid two sets of divorce papers across the polished wood table, offering a final confirmation."Do both parties consent to filing for the dissolution of the marriage?"Luca's eyes stayed fixed on mine, remaining silent for a long moment.Only when the lawyer repeated the question did he break into a faint, self-assured laugh. "Consent."As his pen touched the paper, he looked up, his gaze entirely composed."Viola, I'm giving you six months to get this out of your system. You can come home anytime you want.""Because onc

As the final stroke hit the paper, every last drop of laughter in the room died instantly. The crowd that had been counting down just moments ago now stared at me in stunned silence, their phones still frozen in midair.I capped the pen and pushed the divorce papers back across the table. The smile on Luca's face froze solid. He yanked the document toward him, frantically flipping to the last page. When he saw my signature inked clearly on the line, his face went deathly pale."Viola. Do you even realize what you just signed?""I do," I said."This isn't one of those fake documents we used to play around with! This is real!" he shouted."That's why I signed it," I replied calmly. The spell broke, and a few people in the room finally reacted. Someone forced a dry laugh, scrambling to smooth things over."Man, Viola's taking her acting to a whole new level this year! Come on, Luca, just call the game off already.""Yes, it was just a seven-day trial run. We were all just messing around."
