Chapter 3

Author: Asteria
Day five of this little game, I was officially ready to cut ties with the Fontana family for good.

Years ago, when Luca and I met and fell in love in New York, he refused to rely on his family name, choosing instead to stay behind and build a domain of his own.

Back when he barely had a foothold, I was the one at his side, closing deals, running the docks, and cleaning up the filthy messes that couldn't see the light of day.

We even spent months sleeping on the concrete floor of an abandoned warehouse at our lowest point, yet neither of us gave up.

Through sheer grit and endless hustle, we built a thriving empire and earned the respect of countless business partners.

The day we made our triumphant return to Naples, Luca turned to his men and declared, "Viola isn't just my wife. She's the partner who dragged me out of the dirt. From today on, you answer to the Donna just as you answer to me."

Yet now, he had completely forgotten every battle we fought shoulder to shoulder. He was still convinced that my leaving was just another move in their stupid game.

He sent me a single text: [Go ahead and leave. Come back when you're done throwing your tantrum.]

I returned to the estate strictly to hand back everything that belonged to the Fontana family and sign off on the final transfers.

As it happened, tonight was the victory gala for a massive deal we had just closed.

Luca stood at the center of the grand hall in a tailored suit, laughing and sharing drinks with the bosses of the other families. Beside him, Isabella wore the ancestral emerald brooch, her arm linked with his as she helped him work the room.

I stood a short distance away, watching the spectacle unfold, suddenly hit by how absurd it all was.

I was the one who had pulled off endless sleepless nights to broker this deal. Without me, there wouldn't even be a victory gala tonight. Yet Luca hadn't uttered my name once.

He had put Isabella in the gown custom-made for me, and every time someone addressed her as "Donna," she'd flush and look at Luca, who only smiled, never offering a word of correction.

I didn't bother stepping forward, taking my personal belongings and heading straight for the side exit.

Unexpectedly, I bumped into one of the crew members who had bled alongside us for years. He blinked in confusion, blurting out, "Donna?"

I stopped in my tracks.

He stared at me, bewildered. "Donna, why aren't you in your evening dress? Are you heading out?"

A silence rippled through the banquet hall.

One of the guests glanced between me and Isabella, frowning. "Donna? Then... who is that lady over there?"

Murmurs quickly began to spread through the crowd.

"Wait, isn't she the Donna who negotiated our deal?"

"So if the lady next to the boss isn't the Donna, why is she wearing the matriarch's brooch?"

"Is she the Don's new bride? How come no one mentioned a wedding?"

Before the rumors could spiral out of control, someone nearby lowered his voice to interject. "Haven't you seen the videos floating around among Luca's inner circle?"

"Viola's the one clinging on for dear life, refusing to let go."

"Luca brought Isabella right in front of the whole family, but Viola won't let go of her spot, forever reminding everyone that she and Luca built this business together."

"At the end of the day, she just can't bring herself to give up the title of Donna."

I stood on the fringe of the crowd, keeping quiet.

Beside me, a guest handed a phone to another, the screen playing a short clip.

A single glance was all it took for me to recognize myself in it.

The video showed me sobbing as I tried to tear off Isabella's nightgown, storming into the master bedroom with bloodshot eyes, screaming at her to get out, making a complete fool of myself at the family dinner, storming off under everyone's utter contempt......

Every single clip captured me at my absolute lowest.

What the video didn't show was Luca chasing after me afterward, brushing it off with "it's just a game." Nor did it tell the onlookers that the entire thing had been staged by them from the start.

Over the last three years, every time one of these "games" pushed me to a mental breakdown, I was expected to smile through the crowd's jeers and admit, "I only lost my head because I loved him so deeply."

It turns out they recorded every last second of my anguish, saving my loss of control as leverage for their own cheap entertainment.

And now, they've dragged those old videos out all over again—using them as proof that I was the one "refusing to let go."

Just as I opened my mouth, footsteps echoed behind me, hushing the room instantly.

Luca cut through the crowd, walking straight up to me.

Through mutual acquaintances, I eventually heard whispers of how things turned out back at the Fontana family.Luca never ended up with Isabella.Isabella packed her bags, left Naples, and was never seen again. The clique of friends who placed those annual bets drifted apart, fractured beyond repair.Luca still lives in that grand estate, but it no longer has a lady of the house. He introduces my portrait to everyone: "Viola Rosso, my one and only Donna. She is the love of my life. I was the biggest fool in the world, and I lost her."Someone asked him why he still kept his ex-wife's belongings, why he still talked about me to everyone. He said, "She is no longer in my life, but at the very least, she cannot be missing from my memories."I once ran into him at an exclusive international trade summit. He was sitting in the audience; I was the keynote speaker on stage. When my presentation wrapped, he clapped harder than anyone in the room.As the crowd dispersed, he caught up with me at

The very next evening, Luca gathered the Fontana family's most critical business partners at an exclusive private club. For the first time in his life, he stood before the elite crowd and admitted the truth."The person who built this business alongside me, who brokered every major contract you signed, was Viola Rosso. She is, and always has been, the true Donna.""Isabella was never the Donna of the Fontana family. I merely lent her that title, using her as a pawn to provoke my wife."Within hours, the truth about the notorious "Seven-Day Game" and the long-running betting pools spread like wildfire through every major family. The inner circle who had taken part in those bets went into hiding almost overnight. A few even reached out to me through mutual contacts, desperately begging me to clarify that it was "just harmless banter among close friends."I didn't waste a single word on them, blocking every last number.Isabella's reputation was utterly ruined. The sycophants who used to

It didn't take long for the Fontana family's business empire to show its cracks.Suppliers were suddenly demanding renegotiated terms, and major port authorities insisted on dealing with me, and only me.Within days, a tidal wave of crisis hit the family. Only then did Luca finally suffer the agonizing realization that every major deal closed over the last few years had been driven by my hands behind the scenes. I just never boasted about it.Worse yet, Isabella was rapidly burning everything to the ground. After taking over my responsibilities under Madre's orders, she threw herself into the work with naive enthusiasm. But business requires far more than blind ambition. She hastily restructured the revenue split for a high-stakes port deal, instantly insulting a long-term partner. Then, she recklessly agreed to an exorbitant rate from a supplier, leaving Luca to step in personally, pay millions out of pocket, and smooth things over. The mess she made in a mere two weeks was enough to

Isabella had only sprained her arm.By the time Luca rushed back to the estate, the family doctor had already finished examining her, confirming there were no broken bones and that a few days of rest would do the trick. Her eyes were red as she reached out to grab his hand. "Did you really hand out the divorce filing with Viola?"Luca stayed dead silent for a long time, then gave a heavy nod.An unmistakable gleam of triumph flashed through Isabella's eyes."Luca... this is amazing! I can't believe you did that for me! You're finally free!"She looked up at him, her voice dripping with vulnerability. "Can I ask you something? During those seven days... was there ever a single moment you actually saw me as your wife?"Luca offered no answer. His mind was suddenly flooded with the realization that over the past six months, Viola hadn't even reached out to ask about him once.He had spent months believing she was just waiting for him to break.Only now did it hit him with sickening clarit

At nine sharp the next morning, Luca showed up at the family law firm right on time.He was wearing a sharp, dark gray tailored suit and clutching my wedding ring tightly in his fist. The moment he saw me, his expression relaxed into a calm demeanor. "Sleep well last night?"His tone was so natural it felt like we'd just had a routine spat.I didn't answer, taking my seat directly across from the lawyer.Handling our affairs was the family's long-time legal counsel. He slid two sets of divorce papers across the polished wood table, offering a final confirmation."Do both parties consent to filing for the dissolution of the marriage?"Luca's eyes stayed fixed on mine, remaining silent for a long moment.Only when the lawyer repeated the question did he break into a faint, self-assured laugh. "Consent."As his pen touched the paper, he looked up, his gaze entirely composed."Viola, I'm giving you six months to get this out of your system. You can come home anytime you want.""Because onc

As the final stroke hit the paper, every last drop of laughter in the room died instantly. The crowd that had been counting down just moments ago now stared at me in stunned silence, their phones still frozen in midair.I capped the pen and pushed the divorce papers back across the table. The smile on Luca's face froze solid. He yanked the document toward him, frantically flipping to the last page. When he saw my signature inked clearly on the line, his face went deathly pale."Viola. Do you even realize what you just signed?""I do," I said."This isn't one of those fake documents we used to play around with! This is real!" he shouted."That's why I signed it," I replied calmly. The spell broke, and a few people in the room finally reacted. Someone forced a dry laugh, scrambling to smooth things over."Man, Viola's taking her acting to a whole new level this year! Come on, Luca, just call the game off already.""Yes, it was just a seven-day trial run. We were all just messing around."
