Chapter 10

Penulis: Comfortable Grace
So my mother came for Emma after all. To her, I'd always been expendable; even my death couldn't bring her a flicker of grief. I'd spent years wondering why she never loved me, and even longer accepting I didn't need her love.

Every ounce of her concern had always been for Emma. Even now, her only worry was how Emma might suffer from my death.

Hector's eyes darkened as he looked at her. "Get out. Sienna is dead, and you don't feel a damn thing, do you?"

Her face froze; she was shocked into silence.

I wanted to say to Hector, 'Hector, you're only now realizing I had no family to turn to? That I never truly had a home? I once thought you'd be my shelter, but in the end, you were the one who left me exposed. Now, any remorse you feel is just a hollow gesture.'

My mother tried to plead with him again, but he shoved her aside and walked out, regaining a strange, fleeting calm.

When Emma saw him, she thought her salvation had arrived. "Hector! You came to see me. I'm so scared—get me o

Hector staggered forward, finally dropping to his knees beside my body. His hands shook as he lifted the white cloth, revealing my face. He looked, but only for a second, quickly covering it again."No... it's not her... it can't be her..." His pupils shrank as he tried to convince himself, voice tight with disbelief."Who is this? Sienna didn't look like this... this isn't her!" He went pale, shaking his head, clinging to denial. "She texted me two months ago, promised she'd be with me forever! This... this can't be her!"A strangled cry escaped him, and he slammed his fist into the wall, splitting his knuckles. Blood mingled with the tears that dripped down his face—tears he hadn't even noticed.Hector was crying. From above, I watched, torn between feeling pity and the sting of irony. Months ago, he'd sworn I deserved to die, and now, here he was, shattered by my death."This isn't real... it can't be... Sienna, this joke isn't funny..." He gripped the edge of the stretcher, v

"Sienna's dead? Yeah, right." Hector scoffed, barely giving it a thought before turning back to Emma's birthday celebration."Good riddance. I don't ever want to see her again," he muttered, hanging up.The hatred in his voice was hard, like he believed I'd gotten exactly what I deserved. Then his gaze softened, shifting back to Emma, unbothered—until the police called again.Hector didn't trust Yuna, but he couldn't ignore the police. Their words made his eyes narrow. "Officer, you're saying Sienna's been dead for three months? That's impossible. I got a text from her two months ago. What, am I supposed to believe it was a ghost?"Watching from above, I almost wished I could message him, just to mess with his head."She was a menace," Hector sneered. "Dead or alive, the world's better off without her."The officer hesitated, but Hector hung up, annoyance bubbling over as he stepped onto the balcony for a smoke."What a joke. How long is she planning to haunt me?" he muttered, s

Emma's body shook slightly as she nestled deeper into Hector's arms, her fragile act stirring a protective tenderness in him."Can we just stop looking for her?" she whispered, sounding scared. "I'm just so afraid..."Was she really terrified I'd come back to hurt her—or more afraid that my death would bring her to justice?Without hesitating, Hector assured her, "Alright, we'll stop looking for her. I won't let her come back and harm you."Emma curled up in his embrace, letting out a cautious sigh of relief. But it had never been Hector who wanted to find me in the first place.Knowing he'd always side with Emma, Yuna gave up hope of any help from him. Now, she only waited for confirmation of my phone's location—where I had last been. The next day, the station called her with an update. Her fingers turned white as she gripped the phone, shock washing over her as she absorbed the news. It was chilling. Two months had passed, and yet, my phone's location still showed as Hector's

Hector scoffed. "Missing? Please. She's hiding to avoid justice. She nearly got Emma killed in that fire and now she's too scared to face the consequences. But let's be real—she'll come crawling back for money sooner or later. Just watch."Yuna clenched her fists, furious. She couldn't see how far Hector and I had fallen apart. Nothing she said would make him look for me; he was convinced I'd show up eventually, desperate and helpless.Turning to Emma, he promised, "Don't worry, Emma. When Sienna comes back, I'll make her apologize, and then I'll divorce her."He sounded so sure of himself that he didn't notice the slight panic in Emma's eyes. She knew I'd never come back—one day, I'd just be declared missing. And if I stayed gone, Hector would be all hers.Yuna had her doubts, though. She remembered my text the day I went to meet Emma: [Yuna, promises only last in the moment they're made. I'm done with him. I'm exhausted.]Before I could say more, Emma had coaxed me up to that vi

For a second, I wondered if I'd somehow managed to send that message to Hector. Then I remembered—I'd scheduled it seven years ago, set to send on our anniversary. Never thought it would reach him under these circumstances. His reaction? Pure rage. When I didn't respond, he fired off a furious voicemail: "Sienna, where the hell are you hiding? Dragging this divorce out just makes me hate you more!"He thought my message was some desperate attempt to keep him tied to me, convinced I was still out there, hiding and clinging on.If I'd known back then that Hector would never really be mine, I never would've married him. What Emma threw away, I could never hold. And what she wanted to reclaim, I had no chance of keeping.I'd been trapped in this marriage, sinking deeper every day, believing in a future that wasn't real. I'd stood by him through his worst days, through setbacks and endless nights of rebuilding. I never left, not once. But his promises barely lasted seven years. How
