Chapter 3

Author: Demi Kool
"Who exactly are you? What's your role here? What else do you know? Are you the one who lied?" I asked relentlessly.

The more I pressed Oliver, the more he panicked. He snapped like a cornered dog, lashing out at anyone he could.

Every person in the room turned suspicious eyes on him.

The overhead speakers crackled again. "Players, please hurry. You have one minute remaining before the voting round begins."

I raised my voice. "Let's vote him out first. He's the most suspicious."

"It's not me. It's not me! You damn loser, you're trying to kill me. You're trying to kill me!" Oliver yelled.

The speakers rang out. "Thirty seconds remaining. Please hurry."

As the countdown began, the water tanks that had stopped filling suddenly resumed.

Cheryl stared at the wall in terror, tears streaking her cheeks. "We don't have time. Vote him out first, or we're all dead!"

At the word "dead", Dwayne lost control. "Yes! We have to vote. Let's vote him out!"

Everyone quickly aligned against Oliver.

He turned to Rebecca for help, but Rebecca looked down at her belly and whispered, "I'm sorry. I want to live."

Oliver collapsed, as if the strength had drained out of him.

Every hand pointed toward him.

"Time's up. Players, cast your votes."

Oliver's eyes went vacant, his whole body limp.

"Oliver Carlson is eliminated."

As soon as the announcement ended, Oliver suddenly jolted upright and began thrashing wildly.

He slammed his palms against the glass over and over while gasping for air. His veins bulged across his neck, his eyes nearly popping out of their sockets.

The air inside his water tank was being sucked out.

Oliver flailed like a fish left on dry land, his mouth gaping and his features warping in pain. His nails split and snapped one by one.

I turned my head away, refusing to watch.

A second later, a loud bang echoed through the chamber.

Oliver's head exploded.

Pieces of skull and flesh splattered across the glass, sliding downward in thick, nauseating streaks.

"Aaaaah!" Cheryl let out a piercing scream.

The speakers crackled again. "Unfortunately, players, the game continues."

If Oliver hadn't been the liar, then who was?

Before I could think, Dwayne kicked me hard. His reddened eyes were terrifying. "It was you, wasn't it? You're the one who lied!"

I shook my head quickly, signaling that I knew nothing.

Helen's gaze changed, too. The gratitude she showed earlier disappeared, replaced by fear. In an instant, I became the target of everyone's suspicion.

I finally understood Oliver's situation.

"It wasn't me," I tried to reason. "It really wasn't…"

Cheryl's carefully done makeup had run down her cheeks in thick black streaks, making her look almost monstrous.

"It has to be you! You were the one who said Oliver was the killer, so we voted him out. It has to be you. We're voting you out next!"

Just when I had nowhere to turn, the broadcast sounded again.

"Since all of you seem eager to survive, we will share one more detail. To increase the excitement of the game, we placed an undercover agent among you. The undercover agent's mission is to eliminate you and make you lose. There is one way to survive: find the undercover agent and vote them out."

The one who lied earlier was the undercover agent.

So who was it?

Everyone began looking around, suspicion rising all over again.

The undercover agent's task was to kill us and sabotage the game.

"It's you. Let's vote you out first!"

Dwayne pointed straight at me.

I wanted a lot of money. And right then, Byron found me.He told me to get close to Elizabeth. He often had me deliver things to her. Furious, I killed the cat I had given Elizabeth. She cried her heart out. Honestly, I actually regretted it for a moment. But that regret didn't last long. One day, the city commissioner's son, Byron Cohen, came looking for me. He thought I was Elizabeth's boyfriend. He swaggered up, riding on his father's power, and slapped my cheek lightly. "Listen, kid. Stay away from Elizabeth. She's mine."I was angry at first, but then he pulled a wad of cash out of his bag.Immediately, I shut up.The little brat had money. I realized that as long as I stayed close to him, the cash he tossed around without thinking could support me for months.I became his shadow, flattering him endlessly. On the day he got released without charges, I was the one who told him that Elizabeth's family planned to report him again. That was when he decided to kill them.I honestly thought Byron was just going to scare them a little. "Hurry! Let me out! I won!" I shouted at the chamber's speaker."What's the rush?"A voice suddenly rang out behind me.I spun around in terror and saw Oliver, the one who had died at the very beginning, walking toward me perfectly intact. My eyes locked onto his neck as he rolled it casually and stopped right in front of me. "What's the rush? Don't you want the money?"I stepped back, shocked. "You're the Butcher?"Oliver nodded. Then, he reached into his right pocket and pulled out a check. "Five hundred thousand per person. Five people total. I'll round you up and give you three million."He was the Butcher.Half a month ago, I had run out of money completely. That was when someone using the screen name "The Butcher" contacted me.He asked me to join a game. Every time I eliminated a player, I would get 500 thousand dollars.I thought it would be some harmless challenge.Until the first person died. That was when I realized it wasn't a normal game at all. It was a prem

The chains hooked to Cheryl's arms and legs suddenly yanked in opposite directions. The gears connected to them spun violently, and her body was torn into several large pieces in an instant.Blood splattered everywhere. The mangled pieces of her body hung from the ceiling of the chamber. The speakers crackled again."Unfortunately, even after several rounds, you still haven't identified the undercover agent. But since everyone has participated so enthusiastically, we will adjust the rules of the game."Only one of you may leave this room alive. The two of you must negotiate."The one who survives must give the index finger of their right hand as the price for leaving. The one who does not leave will remain sealed in this room forever."Rebecca and I stared at each other. With a rattle, the chains on our bodies loosened.Rebecca suddenly collapsed to the floor, clutching her stomach. "It hurts… It hurts…"I rushed over and helped her up. Her face was pale, her breathing rough,

Helen's body hung from the metal chains, swinging back and forth in the air.Watching it swing, Rebecca couldn't hold it in and started vomiting loudly. Cheryl was so shocked by the sight that she couldn't say a single word. The speakers crackled again."The game continues."What?Helen wasn't the undercover agent! For more than ten minutes, the entire chamber was so silent that it felt suffocating.Until a sudden, sharp burst of laughter pierced the quiet."Hahahahahaha…"Cheryl's lipstick was smeared all over her mouth, leaving her looking completely disheveled and pitiful. Her hair was a tangled mess, covering her crazed, unfocused eyes. "I'm gonna die… I'm gonna die… I'm gonna die here…"Rebecca finally broke down as well. She sobbed uncontrollably. "Who's behind this? Why are they doing this to us? Why are they killing us? What did we do wrong?"Helen wasn't the undercover agent. So who was?Since the game was still going, the agent had to be one of the two still bes

Helen's voice shook, her words tangled. "H-How can you say that about me? It really isn't me! I'm not lying. I'm not the undercover agent!"Human hearts are unpredictable. Even so, people still make assumptions about others as long as it benefits themselves.Even if they're wrong.Helen kept explaining, but Cheryl and Rebecca clearly didn't believe her.
