Chapter 4

Kylie's smile vanished like a switch. "Aaron, what are you doing here?"

I walked in slow, eyes locked on the birthday cake sitting smug on the table.

It hit me like a punch to the chest.

My kid had just died in a hospital bed.

And her mom was up here, throwing a party for someone else's son.

Caleb noticed me staring and jumped in with that fake smile. "It's Evan's birthday. His surgery went great, and he's healing fast. Kylie came to celebrate. Since you're here, why not have some cake?"

Cake?

His kid stole the kidney meant for my daughter, and he wanted to share cake?

My mind snapped.

I slammed my hand across the table, sent the cake flying—smashed to pieces on the floor.

Evan wailed.

Caleb shouted, "What the hell are you doing?! Jealous of me and Kylie, fine—but don't pull this crap in front of a kid!"

Before I could say a word, Kylie stormed over and slapped me. "Aaron Abel, are you out of your damn mind?! Who said you could come in here and act like this?

"Let me make one thing clear—you're not even good enough to shine Caleb's shoes.

"Apologize to him right now, or we're done. Divorce. Immediately."

I turned to Caleb. "Apologize? For what? Do you even know where that kidney in your kid came from?"

His face twitched. He tried to play it cool. "I—I don't know."

But Evan—still sniffling—suddenly giggled. "Daddy's lying! I know! He told me the kidney was supposed to go to Kylie's daughter.

"But Kylie took it and gave it to me! She said no way she'd let that girl have it! Kylie's the best!"

I looked at Kylie and Caleb.

They'd gone ghost-pale.

My chest felt like it was tearing in two.

Tears slid down, hot and sharp.

"You knew. Both of you. Kylie—do you even realize Stella's dead? Your own daughter. And you killed her."

Kylie didn't say a word. Just stood there, drained of every ounce of color.

Caleb stepped in, voice all gentle and fake. "Aaron, come on. Even if you're jealous, using your daughter's illness like this is low. I've never seen a more irresponsible father. Don't make things harder for Kylie because of us. It hurts to watch."

That was his thing—soft voice, clean mask. And Kylie always bought it.

Sure enough, she steadied, eyes going cold. "Enough, Aaron. I'm done with this. Get out. If you leave now, I MIGHT go check on your daughter later."

I laughed.

She clearly didn't expect that.

Tears kept spilling, but I laughed anyway. "See my daughter? Fine. Then come with me. Right now. Go see Stella."

She barely had time to blink.

I grabbed her hair and yanked.

"Ahhh!"

Kylie screamed—shocked, unready.

She fought, but it didn't matter. I dragged her along, helpless in my grip.

Caleb lunged at me, but I kicked him square in the chest. He hit the ground with a grunt and stayed there.

The whole hospital watched as I dragged their precious director by the hair, straight down to the lower ward.

Kylie screamed the entire way. "You're insane! Aaron, you're a lunatic! Let go! Somebody call security!"

But before anyone could stop me, I'd already yanked her into Stella's room and threw her inside.

"You bastard! How dare you treat me like— I'm divorcing you! I swear I'm—"

She stopped.

The second her eyes landed on Stella's body, it was like the air got sucked out of the room.

All the color drained from her face.

Her knees gave out, and she dropped.

His face was pulp. Body twisted like wreckage.I just stared.Kylie didn't flinch. She checked his pulse, then walked back like a ghost, set the vase down, neat and slow. Her hands were dripping, but she still fixed the flowers. She looked at Stella's photo and smiled."Stella... Mommy did it. He's gone."The cops took her in for murder.Six months later, they gave her death with a two-year reprieve. She didn't blink. And I knew—she'd do it all over again. That same day, we signed the divorce papers in some backroom behind the courthouse.Kylie slid the agreement over, her face twitching just a little."Aaron... do you hate me? Do you ever wish we'd never happened? Maybe none of this would've."I stared at the ring I'd worn for a decade, then set it on the papers."I don't."Met her eyes."Those ten years—with you, with Stella—they were the best part of my life. Even with all the pain, I still cherish it. If I had to choose again, I'd still choose to be with you."Her

I chose Stella's grave myself.Quiet. Open. The kind of place that felt gentle enough for her.The day we buried her, it was just Kylie and me. No one else.It was also Stella's birthday. By then, she should've been healthy again.I should've been walking in with a cake, watching her eyes light up, singing off-key while she laughed.Instead, she was underground. And with her went everything I ever called happiness.Suddenly, footsteps scraped somewhere behind me. Soft. Wrong.I spun—and there he was. Ten meters out, half-hidden behind a headstone. Caleb.I lost it.I crossed the distance in a blink, fisted his collar, dragged him out, and hit him. Once. Then again. Hard.He was all bone and air. He went down fast, stars in his eyes.I kicked him. Twice."You piece of shit. You monster. You get my daughter killed and you still show up? That wasn't enough for you?"He sucked in air, choking—then laughed. Unhinged."Of course it's not enough. I came to watch you cry. The mo

In ten years with Kylie, I took hit after hit just to keep us from falling apart. She grew up rich, spoiled, always used to getting her way—especially in love. So, yeah, every fight ended the same: me backing off, her walking away clean.Still, no matter how much I gave, I lost count of how many times she said she wanted out.Bad day at work? Divorce.Stella got sick? Divorce.Woke up in a mood? Divorce. She tossed that word around like it meant nothing. And every time, I'd try to keep it together. "Marriage means sticking it out. You don't just throw 'divorce' around like confetti."Back then, we never thought I'd be the one to finally say it.Kylie hit the floor, sobbing hard, arms wrapped around my leg like she was drowning."Aaron, please—I'm begging you. Stella's gone. I've already lost my baby, I can't lose you too! Caleb lied to me, I swear—if I could trade places with her, I would! Just give me one more chance. For Stella."I stood there frozen, empty. Nothing showe

Three days later, I planned the funeral myself. All four grandparents showed up—both sides, wrecked.Stella was the only kid in the family. Soft-spoken, sweet, never caused trouble. She was their whole world.Losing her crushed them.Kylie's parents fell apart during the service. Said they never wanted to see her again.I stayed silent the whole time.Had no more tears left.Everything I needed to say to Stella—I'd already whispered it in my head a thousand times.Felt like my soul died with her.I kept replaying those six short years. Beautiful. Way too short. She left me with memories that won't ever fade.Every night after work, I'd open the door and there she was—running straight at me, arms wide."Daddy! Daddy!"I can still hear it. Still feel her tiny arms locked around my waist, like she'd been waiting all day just to breathe again."Daddy, can you come home earlier next time? I missed you so much.""Daddy, when I grow up, I'll buy you a huge house.""Daddy... wil

Kylie's sobs sucked all the sound out of the ward. Then the doctor spoke, voice tight. "Dr. Thornton... there's something I should've told you a long time ago. Your friend's son—his condition wasn't that serious. He could've waited. It would've been fine to do the surgery when another donor came along. "A pause. Heavy."I told your friend that early on. He shut me down. Said he HAD to get this kidney. Told me not to interfere." The doctor swallowed. "I wanted to tell you. But you were always with him. I never got the chance."That was it.Whatever Kylie had left inside her collapsed.Because the Caleb she'd protected, trusted, ruined everything for—had been lying the whole time.Back then, Caleb had shown up in tears, begging. Said his son was critical. Said he couldn't wait.Stella's donor kidney happened to arrive.Kylie decided Evan needed it more. She'd always seen Caleb as sweet, harmless. Never questioned a word.If she'd asked one other doctor—just once—none of thi

"No! This isn't real!"Kylie staggered forward like a ghost, crawling to the bed.Stella wasn't breathing. Hadn't been for hours. Her body was ice."How... How could this happen? Stella wasn't—she wasn't this bad. She can't be—this can't be real!"She kept shaking her head, tears spilling nonstop.Watching her fall apart, I felt nothing. Just bitter, hollow irony."Of course you wouldn't know," I said. "You didn't step into this ward once in six months. I called you again and again. Told you Stella was hurting. Told you she missed you. And what did you say? You were busy. You didn't want rumors."I laughed under my breath. "So how'd you find the time to sit by your ex's kid every day? How did gossip suddenly stop mattering when you handed them a VIP room—when you used your power to steal someone else's kidney for him?"I grabbed her arm and yanked her forward, forcing her to face the bed."Look. Open your eyes. Look closely. This is the Stella you called drama queen. She fough
