For three whole months, Michelle and I fight for that one chance of survival. A video of me confronting my parents in the hospital corridor over their favoritism toward Michelle is posted online. Everyone sees me as selfish and vicious, claiming that I'm willing to disregard family ties just to stay alive. The day before my surgery, my older brother, Dante Stone, comes to my hospital room. He stands in the doorway, looking visibly impatient. "Michelle is just 20 years old. Her life has just started. You've been sickly since you were young. Even if you have the surgery now, how many more years can you possibly live?" Before I can say anything, Dante's phone rings. Michelle's sobs come through the phone. "Is Lia still unwilling to give up the spot?" Dante's voice softens as he patiently reassures her, "Don't be scared, okay? I'm on it. No one can steal what is yours." The first time my heart condition flares up, Dante carries me miles to the hospital. He holds my hand and vows that he will ensure I survive, even if it costs him his life. But now, looking at his familiar yet distant face, I suddenly have no desire to fight for the spot anymore. "Alright, Dante. I don't want the spot anymore."
