BEEP BEEP….. That is the sound Elera wakes up to. Darkness covers her entire vision. It pressed her from all sides.
The darkness Elara feels is just about the absence of light; it feels heavy, suffocating even. It felt as if it had weight, and it filled her entire body.
Her lungs, throat, and chest feel the weight. Her body reacts before her mind can. Elara gasps violently, hoping to breathe in air, but no air follows. She feels her chest being restrained, her ribs tightening painfully as she tries to gasp for air.
Elera tries to move her, but she only feels her fingers twitch weakly, as if they don't belong to her. Her limbs feel distant as she tries to move them again, but they are unresponsive, as if the body is not hers. Elara once again tries to breathe, but she only feels her throat burning.
Elera tries again, this time her body reacting on instinct, air rushed suddenly into her body. It hit her lungs too fast; it was too cold, also. The air feels very sharp. She tries to cough it up, but she can barely do that. The sound could barely escape her dry and broken lips. Her chest rose unevenly, and the air felt like a foreign substance that was not supposed to be there.
It hurts like hell, Elera feels all the hurt. Her body was trembling from the pain. She feels all the strains in her body. Her muscles are stiff and not still responsive. It is as if her body has been in a position for too long, so that even breathing has become something her body has forgotten about.
Elera’s eyelids flutter; they feel too heavy to open. She takes a lot of effort to force her eyes open. The light was something she didn’t prepare for; it came flooding into her eyes, and it was blinding. Elera flinched immediately.
She closes her eyes instinctively and opens them slowly, this time she tries to open her eyes gradually. The light was still too bright. She tries to adjust her eyes and focus on something. Her vision remains disoriented and distorted. Like she was looking at images from underneath water.
Elera hears a faint ringing, although it doesn’t sound like that,t the more she tries to adjust her hearing. The sound went from sounding like a ringing to a rhythm. It sounded like a beeping sound. Machine beeping.
Elera tries to adjust her eyesight. She shifts her gaze around the room, and he starts seeing shadows and then lines which become shapes. She sees machines, a lot of them. They are everywhere. These are machines she has never seen before. They look tall with glowing panels.
These machines are tall, and the panels are glowing. Elera sees wires, a lot of them, across her field of vision. They spread out, connected to different machines, and some connected to her.
Elera was confused. This doesn’t feel right at all. Nothing about what is happening feels right. Elera’s breathing hitched again. She tries to move her body. Even if it is just her fingers or even her hand. But none responded to her.
Elera begins to feel afraid about what is happening. A faint sound escapes her throat. Her heart begins to pound against her chest. Her heart is beating faster now. The beeping sound shifted. The rhythm becomes sharper and more urgent.
BEEP………… it kept echoing through the space around her. Elera feels so afraid because she doesn’t know what is going on. She looks around her, trying to search for something. One question keeps ringing in her mind.
“Where am I?” “The last thing I remembered was….” the thought slips from her again. She knows there was something, something she had to remember. Her chest tightens again, she struggles to breathe, and every breath she takes is another struggle for survival for her.
Elera hears another sound, it was footsteps, it was distant at first, but it kept getting closer. Then she heard the voices, it sounded muffled and urgent. Elera tries to calm herself down and stay still. Her body didn't even respond to that. She tries to latch on to the noise.
The voice keeps drawing closer to the room she is in. Elera noticed the voices sounded tense and panicked.
“It's impossible, how can she be awake now, it's been years….” The voices turn to images as they enter the room and move closer to her. She sees them, people dressed in white. They rushed towards the machine, and some ran to her.
One of the people who ran to check up on her moved close to her. The person didn't have relief, but fear in their eyes. To Elera, why are they afraid of her being awake? The thought has barely settled in her when another voice cuts through the chaos that is happening in the room. “ Her vitals are rising; we need to stabilize them now!”
The machines she was attached to responded immediately. Something cold brushes through her body. She feels another sensation on her neck. Elera flinches. Elera hears a voice of panic in the room.
“Subject E is waking up. There was silence in the room, and the beeping sounds of the machine grew louder.
Elera had a long sleep; she could hear the movements around her, but she couldn’t move her body. She felt trapped in her body again. Meeting Cassian and finding out he is her son was too much for Elera to bear. Though she was unconscious, her mind was still active. She finally was able able to open her eyes. Her eyes moved around the room to see where she was. The room was dark except for the city lights that shone beyond the glass walls. The city sounded so alive, just like the first time she was moved to the room. It still felt very strange to her. Nothing about this world felt human to her anymore. What disturbed her the most was not the technology but Cassian. Her son. Elera couldn’t even imagine having a son that big.Elera remembered the way he looked at her, spoke with her. She remembered the longing in his eyes. Elera sat up slowly in bed. Reminiscing about Cassian. Her gaze stared at the city lights. “Cassian knows something; they all do,” she whispered.“And somehow I’m
Elera lay on the bed, still unconscious, as the medical staff tried to find out what was wrong. The older director turned to the guard who came with news concerning Cassian, “How many minutes more before he gets here?” “In less than five minutes, sir.” his answer made everyone in the room feel tense. They haven’t prepared for a day like this; everything was going out of control. “Is there a way to stall him?” one of the directors asked. Nobody could answer that question because they all knew there was no way to stop Cassian Hartwell. Although young, he has established himself as an immovable force. As they were all contemplating what to do, they heard heavy footsteps outside the door. The directors and the medical staff all stopped their actions, there gaze shifted to the door.“He is here already”, the older executive mumbled in his breath. The atmosphere in the room was very tense, and all gazes were fixed on the door. The door to the room finally opened, and bodyguards rushed in,
Elera was shocked; she couldn’t comprehend what the man had called her. The noise around her became distant in her ears, and the words kept ringing in her ears. Elera couldn’t believe the man called her his mother. Her mind flashed back to the information she saw previously, the reproductive files. Elera couldn’t remember ever being pregnant before she was frozen. The staff members beside Elera also stood stunned; they didn’t expect Cassian to share such information with Elera. It took them a while to regain control of themselves. Elera tried to move the wheelchair she was sitting on closer to the room, but it won’t bulge. She could still see Cassian standing there watching her. His entire gaze was fixed on her.Elera raised her voice a little for Cassian to hear her. “Why did you call me that?” Cassian paused a little before he responded again, “That’s because… You are my mother.” His voice was heard again from the speakers. Elera still found it hard to believe what he was sayin
There was a change in the atmosphere before he even arrived. There was an unusual silence in the air. The type of silence that comes before a storm. Elera could help but observe way the staff members moved. Elera had been sitting near the archive room doorway with two medical staff members behind her. Two guards stepped in front of her without any explanation. “Doctor Voss, we need you to return to your designated area,” one of the guards said with a hint of hostility in his voice. Elera felt angry, first, because nobody answered her questions, and now they are restricting her movements. Elera responded angrily, “I didn’t leave my designated area. Besides, you can see me with the medical staff. The guards didn’t respond; instead, they signaled to the medical staff. The staff had no choice but to obey them. Elera knew there was nothing she could do at that moment, especially not in her weak state. The medical staff guided her forward; there was no room for negotiations. The wheelch
The numbers displayed on the screen remain the same. Elera was still trying to wrap her head around what she was seeing. She stared at the screen till her eyes became blurry. “TWENTY-FIVE YEARS, How did this happen?” The words kept echoing in her head. Elera was having difficulty processing the in
The chaos and noise in the room faded away slowly; it didn’t settle all at once, but gradually. The urgency in the room has softened. Voices are no longer sharp but in low murmurs now. The chaotic movements in the room are now more settled and more controlled. The machines are now steady. The chao
The once silent room became more chaotic, footsteps rushing in from every direction. A miracle was occurring. Elera feels the air around her shifting, and more people begin to fill the room. Elera sees nothing but shadows of people hovering around her; it shields her from the harsh light of the ro
