Chapter 5

Author: Cambridge Farewell
The moment I blew the wooden whistle, the pain sharpened violently.

But I held on tighter.

Bellareyna. Darius. This game of chess had reached its endgame.

When the agony crashed over me like tidal waves, I was carried into a hidden room within the queen's quarters.

The space had long been prepared as a delivery room. The heavy smell of blood mixed with herbs, thick enough to make you dizzy.

A folding screen split the room in two. From the other side, I could hear Bellareyna's deliberately exaggerated cries.

"Ah… it hurts… Darius…"

"Don't be afraid, Bellareyna. I'm right here."

Darius's voice drifted through the screen, painfully gentle.

I lay on the birthing bed, sweat soaking through my shift.

Two midwives stood at the foot of the bed, their eyes darting nervously away.

No question—they were Bellareyna's people.

The floating comments raced wildly across my vision.

[Here it comes! The legendary baby swap scene!]

[The young general looks so handsome and cool. He'd do anything for his beloved.]

"Push, my lady!"

The midwife urged me on, though her hands pressed clumsily against my stomach.

I bit through the tip of my tongue, using the pain to force myself to stay conscious.

Behind the screen, Bellareyna's "weak cries" grew softer and softer.

"Darius… am I… going to die…?"

Darius's voice sharpened instantly.

"Don't talk like that! Nothing's going to happen to you. I won't let anything happen."

Then I heard him lower his voice.

"How's it going on the other side?"

Someone answered quietly, "She's already in labor, but the baby is breech. I'm afraid…"

Darius cut in without the slightest hesitation.

"Save the children. The children have to live."

I closed my eyes.

So that was the truth.

In his heart, as long as Bellareyna could have healthy children, my life meant nothing.

Another violent wave of pain tore through my abdomen. Something inside me dropped heavily downward.

"The head's out!" one of the midwives exclaimed—this time with genuine shock.

Gathering every last bit of strength, I gave one final push.

The first child, a boy, slid into the world, his cries loud and strong.

Moments later came the second—a girl.

Twins.

The midwives quickly cut the cords and wrapped the babies in cloths.

Weakly, I reached out a trembling hand.

"Let me… see them…"

The midwife carrying the children stepped backward.

"Please be patient, my lady. I need to clean them first…"

Holding my babies in their arms, they walked toward the folding screen.

"No…"

I tried to force myself up, only to fall from the bed.

My knees slammed against the ice-cold floor. Crawling forward, I dragged myself through the spreading pool of blood beneath me, leaving a long red trail behind.

Behind the screen, Bellareyna asked weakly, "Twins…?"

"Your Majesty," came the reply, "a boy and a girl."

Joy filled Bellareyna's voice.

"That's wonderful… Darius, I finally have children now…"

Darius was silent for a very long time before answering with a single word.

"Yes."

One word.

And with that one word, he gave both of my children away.

The midwives carried the wrapped infants around the screen while I watched helplessly, my fingernails scraping desperately into the gaps between the floor tiles.

"Wait… the children… my children…"

My voice turned raw from screaming, but no one looked back. Panic and despair clawed through my chest.

Darius stood beside the folding screen, his face half-lit by flickering candlelight.

His gaze stayed down.

He didn't dare look at me.

The floating comments exploded.

[AHHH THIS IS SO PAINFUL TO WATCH!]

[General, turn around and look at her!]

I laughed.

Blood bubbled at my lips as the laughter dissolved into coughing.

"Darius… you're going to regret this…"

Bracing myself against the floor, I slowly forced myself to stand. Blood streamed down my legs.

His whole body went stiff.

At that exact moment, the hidden room doors suddenly burst open.

"The King has arrived!"

Edward poured me a cup of wine, a faint smile in his eyes."Celeste, there's something I'd like to discuss with you.""Go ahead, my king.""I want to name Cedric the Crown Prince."I paused."He's still young…""I know," Edward said, covering my hand with his. "But I want to give you and the children the most secure future I can."I looked into his eyes."Edward, you don't have to go this far. Even without naming an heir, I will still stay by your side."He smiled."I know. But I still want to do it."Celeste, in my life, there are two things I am most grateful for. One is that I never truly loved Bellareyna. The other is that I burst into that delivery room that night… and found you."I leaned against his shoulder.Moonlight bathed the courtyard. The scent of blossoms drifted through the air. In the distance, the laughter of our children echoed.Life was good. Truly good.…Ten years later.Cedric had grown into a tall, composed young man and had already served as Cro

King Edward looked at Bellareyna, his gaze utterly cold."Bellareyna, for framing the bloodline of a loyal lord, your crimes are beyond pardon. Take her from my sight. Let her drink the cup of poison."Bellareyna screamed and struggled as the royal guards dragged her out.At the doorway, she turned back to look at me one last time. Her gaze was filled with poisonous hatred. But I no longer cared. The king returned to my side, took Seraphine from my arms, and gently patted the child to soothe her. Then, before the entire court, he took my hand."Celeste Blaire, born of loyal blood, noble in spirit, and blessed to bear my heirs. I name her Queen. Let her coronation be set upon a blessed day."This time, no one dared object. The coronation ceremony was set for the fifth day of May.On that day, the sunlight was perfect. I wore the queen's coronation robes and step by step ascended the marble stairs.Lords and ladies knelt in rows, their voices rising in unison to proclaim, "Lon

Before the servant could respond, another panicked report rang out, "Your Majesty! The deposed queen has escaped the isolated convent. She's coming this way!"The entire hall erupted in shock. The next moment, the doors were violently shoved open.Bellareyna burst inside, hair disheveled, a pair of scissors clenched in her hand. Her body bore burn marks, her face streaked with soot and ash—half black, half pale, like a madwoman."My children!" she screamed. "Give me back my children!"The royal guards rushed forward, but she suddenly pressed the scissors against her own throat."Don't come any closer! One more step and I'll kill myself right here!"Her gaze locked onto Seraphine in my arms."That's my daughter! I gave birth to her! Celeste, you thief! You stole my daughter!"The councilors stirred in uproar. The king's expression darkened. "Bellareyna, you've lost your mind.""I haven't!" she cried desperately. "Your Majesty! The last thing that surfaced in my mind was Darius's unwavering voice in the delivery chamber, "Save the children."I said, "I don't hate him anymore. A person who no longer matters isn't worth hating."The king looked at me deeply."Good," he said at last.At the end of February, on the day Darius was banished from the capital, a spring rain fell.I stood atop the palace wall, watching the prison convoy slowly roll out through the city gates.Darius wore prison clothes and heavy chains, turning back once in the rain.Even from that distance, I could feel his gaze.He was looking for me.I turned away and left.Behind me, the floating comments sighed:[Honestly, the young general is kind of pitiful.][But he had it coming. The king was silent for a long moment before speaking."Queen Bellareyna—faking pregnancy to win favor, harming the royal heirs, and sowing chaos in the palace. From this day forward, her title is revoked. She is to be confined to a remote convent, never to leave again.""Darius Lewis, General of the Northern Defense Army—conspiring with the royal household, deceiving the crown, and attempting to corrupt the royal bloodline. Strip him of his title, remove his military rank, and banish him to the Southern Wastelands. He shall never return to the capital."As the royal decree fell, Bellareyna let out a piercing scream."No! Your Majesty! I love you! I just wanted a child for us—our child—"The royal guards covered her mouth and dragged her away.Darius did not resist. He only looked at me as tears rolled down his face."Celeste… I'm sorry… I really… I just didn't want to see her suffer…"I turned my face away."Take him away."The king waved his hand.As Darius was dragged out

The sharp announcement shattered the deathly silence of the queen's chambers.A young king in a golden robe stood at the entrance, followed by a dense formation of royal guards.Candlelight flickered across his stern features. His gaze swept the room.Across Darius's face, which had gone instantly pale.Across Bellareyna behind the screen, where her panic had ripped away her fake pregnancy cushion—white cotton stuffing spilling across the floor. And finally, it landed on me.Covered in blood, barefoot in a pool of blood, yet still standing upright. The king stepped inside slowly. His boots pressed into the blood-soaked floor with faint, sticky sounds. He bent down and picked up an emerald pendant I had deliberately torn loose before the delivery. On its reverse side were two carved words: Rightful Heir.Last month, the Royal Observatory had reported an omen: a falling star meant that one of the twins carried the destiny of the throne. This pendant was the "evidence" I had a
