Chapter One Hundred and Twenty-Four

Liana’s POV

We walked in silence for a while. The hallway was quiet now, the sounds from the council chamber fading behind us. The palace always felt large, but in moments like this, it felt endless. Like every corridor, it carried something unsaid.

His hand stayed at the small of my back. Not tight. Not light. Just steady contact that told me he meant for me to stay beside him.

Not behind him.

Beside him.

The guards stepped back as we passed, clearing the way without being told. I could feel their eyes, but my attention was on the sound of our footsteps echoing off the stone.

Kael didn’t look at me, but I could feel the shift in him. The tension that had been coiled in his shoulders during the meeting had loosened. But something else took its place. Something quieter. Something that held weight.

We reached the inner hall before his chambers. Sunlight touched the floor in long, warm lines.

He finally spoke.

“You held yourself well.”

Chapter One Hundred and Twenty-Seven Liana’s POVThe hall was too warm. The air felt thick from the torches and bodies gathered close together. Laughter came in waves. Silverware clinked softly. Music played somewhere in the back, cheerful and light, but it didn’t reach the table we sat at. It felt like the world existed here in layers, and I was only now learning how to see them.Kael sat straight, his posture strong, his face calm. He didn’t pretend to smile. He didn’t entertain small talk. He existed in the space like the centre of gravity itself, and people adjusted around him without ever realising they did.I kept my hands folded in my lap, fingers loose, not tense. At least I hoped they looked that way. My shoulders were relaxed, chin up, gaze forward. It took effort to hold myself still. I could feel every motion I avoided. Every breath I controlled.Across the table, Lord Corin’s eyes stayed on me longer than they should have. Not harshly. Not approving either. Just curious.

  • The King’s Relentless Desire    At His Side

Chapter One Hundred and Twenty-SixLiana’s POVAs we walked, I felt my steps growing smaller, quieter, even though I tried to keep them steady. It wasn’t fear. It was something else. Something heavier and harder to name. I kept close beside Kael, just as he had told me, though every part of me expected to make a mistake somehow. To misstep. To embarrass myself. To prove I didn’t belong. But he stayed right there. His hand didn’t touch mine, yet I could feel the space where his hand could be. A closeness that wasn’t physical but still pulled me toward him.The hallways were dim, with golden candlelight flickering against the walls. The castle always seemed cold, always stone and echo, but tonight I felt heat in my body, deep and constant. Maybe it was the dress. Or the way he had looked at me. Or the softness in his voice when he said to stay beside him.I didn’t know.I only knew that I was aware of everything. The sound of our steps. The slight brush of his cloak when it moved. The w

Chapter One Hundred and Twenty-Five Liana’s POVThe room held its quiet, but my mind did not.I stayed on the balcony for a long time, feeling the wind against my skin. The courtyard below looked calm. Servants moved like small shapes, distant and forgettable. The world kept going as though nothing inside me had changed. But I had.Kael’s touch still lingered on my skin. A gentle press of fingers that somehow felt more intimate than anything else we had shared. Not controlling. Not claiming. Just there. Steady. Certain. It shouldn’t have mattered as much as it did.I stepped away from the balcony and moved back into the room. The floor was warm beneath my feet. The fire flickered softly, the flames slow and steady. The bed looked untouched even though we had stood in this room so many times before, always on the edge of something dangerous.I sat on the edge of the bed and curled my fingers into the blanket. The fabric was soft. Thick. Rich. A reminder of luxury I had never grown up

  • The King’s Relentless Desire    The Walk

Chapter One Hundred and Twenty-Three Liana’s POV We stepped into the hallway together, and the guards standing on either side straightened when they saw him. Their eyes flicked to me, then away again, like they didn’t know how they were supposed to look at me now. Not a prisoner. Not consort. Not an enemy. Something in between. Something is still taking shape. Kael didn’t speak as we walked. He didn’t need to. His presence filled the space enough. The corridor looked different from how I remembered. Or maybe it was that I looked at it differently now. The stone walls didn’t feel cold. The light didn’t feel harsh. Everything felt sharper, like my senses were tuned toward something I hadn’t been aware of before. People paused when we passed. Servants. Guards. Advisors. None of them spoke. But they looked. Oh, they looked. Some with curiosity. Some with confusion. A few with something like resentment they tried to hide. I felt all of it. I didn’t shrink from it. Kael’s hand hovere

  • The King’s Relentless Desire    In His Quarters

Chapter One Hundred and Twenty-Two Liana’s POV The door closed behind us, and the quiet of the room settled around me. It was not the silence of emptiness. It felt lived in. Warm. The kind of silence that came from familiarity, not absence. The windows were open, letting in morning air that carried the faint scent of pine and distant smoke from the city below. The curtains shifted slowly with the breeze. The light in the room was soft, not sharp or cold the way castle light often was. Kael walked further in, removing the dark clasp at his shoulder and placing his cloak over the back of the chair near the table. He moved like he always did. Controlled. Aware of space. Not wasting motion. I stayed near the door for a moment, just taking the room in again. I had been here before. But today felt different. Like stepping back into a place changed simply because I was changed. Kael looked at me then. Really looked. His attention felt steady and complete, the way it did when he was ma
