VINCENZO

Thanks to Stefano’s brilliant brain, he was able to track Nancy to the old docks. I drove as fast as I could, desperately hoping that I wasn’t too late.

But I was, I was fucking late. I’d arrived just in time to catch Lena’s chair topple over the dock’s edge into the black waters below. Her eyes were full of fear as she screamed for help, but no sound came from her because she was gagged.

The splash was deafening.

“No—LENA!”

“Shit, that crazy bitch!” Lorenzo cursed as he screeched to a halt, tires skidding against the damp pavement. Then I saw her, Nancy, she saw me too, her eyes full of worry and satisfaction as she made for her car. I wasn’t about to let her get away with this, not on my life.

I quickly got out of the car, my gun drawn.

Nancy barely had time to register my presence before my gunshot cracked through the air. The bullet going straight through her shoulder, sending her stumbling back with a shriek.

It didn’t take long before I was at Lena’s apartment. This place always gave me the creeps, and I honestly don’t know why Lena still insists on staying here. The moment the car stopped, I practically threw the money at the driver and bolted out. Running up the cracked steps of the old rundown apartment building, pushing the rusty front doors open, I found my way in. I couldn’t stop thinking about her wellbeing. And even when I tried my possible best to think positively about the matter, my mind kept wandering to the negative. In reality, I was scared out of my mind about what could have happened to her. I was scared of what I would find behind those doors.“Lena!” I called out as I pounded on her front door, but no one came to answer.I tried again, louder this time. “Lena, open up! It’s me!”Still, there was nothing. With a frustrated groan, I pressed my ear against the door. No shuffling, no sounds, no movement. The place was clearly empty.Dread curled in my s

JAZZThe warm morning sun slipped in through the cracks of the window blinds, the sunlight casting soft golden streaks across my bedroom. But unlike the other days, today feels different for some reason. Maybe it was because I had a wonderful time with Luke last night. I could still feel him on me as I stretched lazily in bed, a slow smile curling onto my lips as the memories of last night came back like a flood, reigniting the fire that nearly burned me, but in a good way. Oh, this feeling, it was more than just good. I still couldn’t believe it myself, but then it was hard to ignore the way my skin still tingled from Luke’s touch lingering in the places he kissed me. Just thinking about it made me sigh wishfully, the way he whispered my name against my lips. It all felt so freaking unreal—too good to be true. But it did happen.I turned over expectantly, the smile on my face still evident, although I still hadn’t opened my eyes. “Good mor...ning?” my smile slipped, because

I gulped softly, the bobbing of my throat sounding louder in my ears.“Kiss…me?” My hands froze in the soapy water as I repeated the words.I should say something. Anything.Tell him no.Tell him yes.Tell him I didn’t know. But instead, I stood there, letting the moment stretch between us, tension crackling like a live wire.“Say something,” he urged, his lips hovering near my ear, his voice nearly a whisper.I turned the faucet off, remembering money doesn’t fall from the sky. I turned my head just slightly, enough to meet his gaze from the corner of my eye.“What if I say yes?” I asked softly. Feeling a little bit bolder now.Luke’s eyes darkened, his jaw tightening as if restraining himself. His fingers lightly brushed my hip, his touch featherlight but I felt it like a current through me.“Then you won’t mind if I don’t hold back,” he said.I let out a shaky breath as I turned fully to face him, my back pressing against the sink.

JASMINE’S POVI scrolled through my phone for what felt like the millionth time already this evening, my thumbs hovering over Lena’s name in her call log. The last message I sent had been left unread, and every call after that had gone straight to voicemail. This wasn’t like her. My stomach churned with unease as I continued to dial her number in hopes that she would pick up. Sure, Lena and I weren’t the kind of friends who talked every second of the day, but something about this wasn’t normal. Lena always checked in, especially with the competition coming up. And that was only eleven days away from now.A lump formed in my throat. Maybe I was overreacting, but why couldn’t I shake off the gnawing feeling of anxiety creeping up my spine?“Heloo, earth to Jasmine,” Luke’s voice broke through my thoughts and I looked up to meet his gaze. “Oh, I’m sorry, did you say something?” I completely forgot that he was walking beside me, hands shoved into his pockets as alw
