AURORA

I waited until the house got quiet before I went looking for Dylan again, telling myself I just wanted the truth. Really, I wanted him to fix it. I wanted him to look me in the eyes and say it was all just a huge misunderstanding, that Ivy meant nothing to him, and the word "engagement" didn’t mean what I thought it meant.

I found him in his room, alone this time, and I shut the door behind me before my nerves could talk me out of it.

"We need to talk…" I said. My voice shook on the word "talk." I hated that it did.

Dylan looked up from whatever he was reading and set the paper down slowly, like he was buying himself time. "Aurora—"

"Is it true?" I cut in. "Is the engagement real?"

He didn't answer right away, and that was answer enough. I felt my whole body go cold, but I kept standing there because I still had one card left to play, one thing that definitely had to make a difference.

"Dylan, just say something," I said. "Anything. Tell me I'm wrong."

"I'm not going to lie to you," he said, finally meeting my eyes. "Not about this."

"So it is true."

"It's complicated."

"It's a yes or no question!" I snapped, my voice breaking even more.

Then I took a deep breath and said the magic words that were supposed to fix everything. "I'm pregnant.”

I watched his face when I said it. For half a second, I saw an emotion behind his eyes. I didn’t know if it looked like fear or even surprise, but I held onto it like it meant something.

Then it was gone.

"That doesn't change anything," he said quietly.

"What?" I whispered.

"I've already made my choice, Aurora. It's Ivy. The alliance with her family is not just about me anymore, it's about the whole pack. My father's been planning this for months."

"You're choosing an alliance over your own child?" I could hear my voice getting louder, but I couldn't stop it. "Over me?"

"It's not that simple."

"It's exactly that simple!" I stepped closer, my hands already trembling. "Dylan, we've been together since we were kids. I gave up my place on the training team for you. I gave up everything, every single time because I believed you'd do the same for me one day."

He looked away first, his gaze moving out the window, like the view was more interesting than me standing there falling apart in front of him. "I never asked you to give up anything."

"You didn't have to ask. I did it because I love you." My voice cracked on the last word and I hated that. "Dylan, please look at me. There's a baby. Our baby."

"Aurora—"

"Do you even hear yourself?" I pressed on, because if I stopped talking I was going to fall apart completely. "You used to tell me we'd have kids someday. You used to say it like it was the easiest thing in the world, remember? On the back porch last summer, you said it right to my face."

"That was before," he said.

"Before what? Before your father decided Ivy's family was worth more to you than I am?"

He flinched at that just barely, but it wasn't enough. It was never going to be enough.

"It doesn't change anything," he repeated, and this time his voice was flat and tired, like I was nothing but an inconvenience to him.

I stood there for a moment longer, waiting for some crack in him, some sign that the boy I used to know was still in there somewhere. He just looked like my presence was irritating and he never wanted to set his eyes on me anymore.

"Fine," I whispered because there was nothing else left to say.

I walked out of his room feeling smaller than I'd ever felt in my life, like I'd shrunk three sizes just standing in that doorway.

Back in my own room, I sat on the edge of my bed and let myself cry properly for the first time that whole day. Willow was quiet inside me, which somehow made it worse. Even she didn't know what to say.

I don't know how long I sat there crying my heart out, looking puffy-eyed and pathetic over a man who'd already made up his mind, before I noticed the pain in my stomach.

At first, I thought it was just the crying. I thought my body felt weird and achy because I’d been sobbing too hard. So I pressed a hand to my stomach and told myself to breathe.

It didn't fade like the earlier waves had. If anything, it got sharper, until it turned into a deep, pulling pain that made me suck in a breath through my teeth.

At that moment, what I didn't know was that earlier, before I'd even gone looking for Dylan the second time, someone had slipped something into the drink a maid had brought up to my room. Right now, I didn't know anything except that something was very wrong, and it was getting worse by the second.

I tried to stand, thinking maybe walking it off would help, or maybe even some air. The room tilted the moment I got to my feet, spinning slowly until I felt so sick that my legs gave out from under me.

I reached for the edge of the bed and missed.

That's when I felt something warm and wet spreading beneath me on the floor, and the panic that I’d been holding back all day finally broke loose all at once.

I looked down and saw blood.

I was bleeding.

"No," I said out loud to no one except the empty room.

Now Willow was suddenly wide awake and howling somewhere inside my skull. ‘No, no, no.’

I tried to push myself up again, my hands slipping on the floor, my whole body shaking now in a way that had nothing to do with crying. I opened my mouth to call for help, but the sound that came out was barely loud enough for me to hear.

My hand moved desperately over my stomach. “Please,” I whispered. “Please, don’t take my baby.”

The room blurred as another wave of pain ripped through my body. And then Willow went completely silent.

My heart stopped. “Willow?”

But there was nothing.

For the first time since I’d gotten my wolf, I couldn’t feel her at all.

Was I really going to die here, alone in this room?

  • The Kingslayer’s Forbidden Mate   Chapter 10

ROMANThe paperwork covered the entire desk, every sheet pulled from the trafficker's records and spread out like pieces of a puzzle that refused to fit together no matter how much I went through them. I'd been at it for two hours, and I still didn't have a name."Whoever paid for this knew exactly what they were doing," Gideon said from across the desk, flipping through another stack of bank statements with the kind of patience I didn't have right now. "The money went through three different accounts before it vanished. That's not some random guard trying to make a little extra cash on the side.""No," I agreed, rubbing a hand over my jaw. "It's not."I traced the payment trail again for what felt like the hundredth time. It started clean enough, a transfer from an account in the south, then it moved to a second account registered to a name that turned out to be fake, and then a third that led absolutely nowhere. Whoever did this had planned it carefully, covering every step like the

AURORAShe told me her name was Josie when she came in carrying a tray of food like she'd done it a hundred times before, chatting easily the second she stepped through the door like the two of us had known each other for years already instead of mere minutes."You need to eat something," she said, setting the tray down carefully beside the bed. "Doctor's orders, and honestly, my own orders too. You look like you haven't had a real, proper meal in weeks, and don't try telling me otherwise."I hadn't, but I didn't say that part out loud. She was younger than me, maybe, with an easy, open smile that didn't match a single thing I'd expected to find anywhere in Ravenwood. She talked while she moved around the room, laying out clean folded clothes across the chair, fixing the heavy curtains so the light filtered in just right, and filling the silence between us before it could even turn heavy and uncomfortable. For a few minutes, just listening to her go on about nothing in particular—the

AURORAI braced myself for his cruelty the second he stepped further into the room.I didn't know exactly what I expected. Shouting, maybe. Or a hand roughly closing around my arm and dragging me out of the bed toward somewhere far worse than this warm, quiet room with its soft blankets and soothing fire. Every single story I'd ever heard whispered about the Kingslayer came rushing back to me all at once, and none chilling fear ran down my spine when I realized that every one of those stories ended in blood, dead bodies, and empty packs. But none of that happened. He didn't raise his voice or even come all the way over to the edge of the bed. He just stopped a few feet away, his dark eyes slowly moving from my face down to my throat and staying there, as if he'd forgotten how to look anywhere else."Where did you get that?" he asked. His voice was low and even, nothing at all like I'd expected from a man with his kind of reputation.I blinked up at him in confusion. "Get what?""The

AURORAI woke up gasping like I'd been pulled up from underwater. For one horrible second I didn't know where I was, and my whole body reacted before my mind could even catch up to it. I could still feel the cold metal of the chains digging into my wrists, still smell the inside of that truck, still hear the engine grinding on and on for hours with no end anywhere in sight. My whole body still ached in the same places it had ached for days.My hand flew to my stomach before I even opened my eyes all the way."No," I said, and then it wasn't a word anymore, as a scream ripped from my throat. "No, no! Where's my baby?! Someone tell me where my baby is!"I didn't recognize the room around me. But what I noticed was the soft blanket pulled up to my chin, a warm fire crackling somewhere close by, and curtains in a deep green shade I'd never seen before in my entire life. None of it made any sense, and none of it mattered, because all I could think about was the small curve under my hand a

ROMANThe box sat on my desk like it was daring me to open it.Eleven years. That's how long it had been locked away in the study, shoved behind old files where I didn't have to look at it every single day. Gideon had brought it up without a word, setting it down on the desk, then leaving just as quietly. He understood more than he let on. He always did. That was part of the reason I kept him around, even when he said things I didn't want to hear.I sat there for a long moment before I even touched it. The wood was darker than I remembered, scratched along one corner, and there was a thin layer of dust across the lid, which was evidence of exactly how long it had sat there untouched.I ran my thumb over the small brass lock, then pulled the key from my pocket. My hand shook slightly, just enough that I noticed it, and noticing it annoyed me more than the shaking itself did.I wasn't a man who shook. Not anymore. Not since I'd made myself into someone everyone called a monster."Get it

  • The Kingslayer’s Forbidden Mate   Chapter 5

ROMAN I never usually bothered with the prisoners the traders brought to settle debts. I let Gideon handle the sorting, the counting, all of it. Faces and names always blurred together in my mind after a while, and most of them meant nothing to me beyond a number in a file somewhere. But something made me walk the line myself that night. I concluded it was just because the last shipment had come in short, and I wanted to see for myself what these traders thought they could get away with. That was what I believed until the wind shifted and a scent hit me like a fist straight to the gut.My wolf surged awake so violently that I nearly stumbled. I hadn’t felt him react like that in years.Gideon noticed. "What is it?" he said, coming to stand beside me.I didn't answer him. I couldn't have explained it even if I tried. It wasn't a scent I recognized exactly, but something about it pulled at me anyway, so sharp and insistent like my whole body had decided something my mind hadn't."Roman
