AURORA

The pain didn't stop. If anything, it got worse, like something inside me was being torn apart violently. I dragged myself off the floor, one hand pressed against my stomach, the other clawing at the wall for something to hold onto.

I needed help. I needed someone, or anyone really.

Willow was screaming inside me now, making a sound I'd never heard from her before, her voice so high and panicked and completely useless because neither of us could do anything to stop what was happening.

I could feel her trying to push forward to take over, like maybe the wolf side of me could fix what the human side couldn't. But she couldn't either. We were both just scared, bleeding, and completely alone.

I stumbled out into the hallway, my legs barely holding me up, and I called out, or at least I tried to. What actually came out was so thin and broken, not even loud enough for anyone nearby to hear.

"Please," I whispered. "I need help."

But nobody came.

What would happen to my baby now? Would it even survive this?

Then I thought about Dylan, probably still in his room with Ivy, not even thinking about me at all. I thought about how many years I'd spent in this pack, growing up here, training here, falling in love here, and how in this one moment when I actually needed someone, not a single person was in sight.

Somewhere far off, I heard the sound of a door not too far away, maybe two doors down, and hope flared up in my chest so fast it almost hurt more than the pain in my stomach. I opened my mouth to call again, gathering all the strength I had left.

"Help me," I managed, my voice barely above a whisper. "Someone, please help me."

The door didn't open. Whoever it was either didn't hear me, or didn't care enough to check. I kept moving, with one hand on the wall, dragging myself past room after room of a place I used to think of as home.

My vision started going blurry, the hallway stretching, looking longer than it should have been. I reached for the wall again to steady myself, but I missed completely, my hand grabbing at nothing but air.

The last thing I remembered was the cold floor against my cheek, and underneath that, the sound of my own heartbeat, getting slower and slower as it thudded in my ears.

And then there was nothing.

DYLAN

Word reached me within the hour. Aurora was badly hurt, and they didn’t think she was going to make it. Someone had found her collapsed in the hallway outside her room, in a pool of blood, and nobody knew how long she'd been lying there before she was found.

For just one second, something in me cracked. I was already moving toward the door before I even realized I'd stood up, my whole body running on instinct, a part of me still remembering every single year we'd spent together.

My father caught my arm before I even took three steps. "Where do you think you're going?" he asked.

"Aurora's hurt. I need to see her."

"There's nothing you can do for her now," he said, his grip tightening around my wrist, hard enough to hurt. "It's already bad, Dylan. Going by what they're saying, she might not even make it through the night."

"You don't understand," I said, my voice breaking slightly. "I need to see her. I need to know she's okay."

"Do you?" My father's eyes narrowed. "Or do you just need to feel like a good man for five minutes before you go back to doing what needs to be done?"

The question got to me more than I wanted it to. "I just need to be there."

"You need to stay exactly where you are," he said, lowering his voice like he was letting me in on some great secret. "With Ivy. Tonight of all nights, people are watching. If you go running off to Aurora's bedside now, what does that say about the engagement? About us?"

I stood there in the doorway, torn. Somewhere down that hall, Aurora was lying there, broken because of choices I'd made, and somewhere behind me, Ivy was waiting with her family's name and everything that came with it.

"She's carrying my child," I said quietly, like saying it too loud might make it more real than I could handle.

My father didn't even flinch. "All the more reason to stay away. Let it be handled quietly."

I hesitated. God, I hesitated so long I could feel the seconds passing, each one heavier than the last. Aurora's face flashed in my head, and I couldn’t help but recall the way she'd looked at me in my room just hours earlier, still hoping I'd choose her even after everything.

My father's grip tightened one more time. “Choose carefully, Dylan.”

I looked toward the hallway. Somewhere down there, Aurora was fighting for her life, and my child was fighting with her.

But all I had to do was walk away.

And after everything, even with the baby, after years and years of loving her the only way I knew how, I turned around and walked away from her.

I knew exactly what I was doing when I made that decision.

I just didn’t understand yet how much it would cost me.

I only told myself it was temporary. I told myself I'd go check on her later, once things had quieted down and nobody was watching so closely. I told myself a lot of things that night as I walked toward Ivy's room with my father's hand on my shoulder, guiding me like I was a child.

Ivy was waiting up for me when I stepped into her room, sitting by the window with a glass of wine like nothing in the world was wrong. She looked up at me and must have seen something in my face, because her smile vanished for half a second before she smoothed it back into place.

"Everything alright?" she asked.

"Fine," I said, though nothing about it was fine. "Just pack business."

She nodded and went back to her wine, and I sat down across from her and told myself, over and over, that I'd made the right call. I almost believed it. I almost believed a lot of things that night, sitting in that warm, bright room while somewhere in this same house, the woman I'd loved my whole life was bleeding out, the life slowly leaving her body minute by minute.

  • The Kingslayer’s Forbidden Mate   Chapter 10

ROMANThe paperwork covered the entire desk, every sheet pulled from the trafficker's records and spread out like pieces of a puzzle that refused to fit together no matter how much I went through them. I'd been at it for two hours, and I still didn't have a name."Whoever paid for this knew exactly what they were doing," Gideon said from across the desk, flipping through another stack of bank statements with the kind of patience I didn't have right now. "The money went through three different accounts before it vanished. That's not some random guard trying to make a little extra cash on the side.""No," I agreed, rubbing a hand over my jaw. "It's not."I traced the payment trail again for what felt like the hundredth time. It started clean enough, a transfer from an account in the south, then it moved to a second account registered to a name that turned out to be fake, and then a third that led absolutely nowhere. Whoever did this had planned it carefully, covering every step like the

AURORAShe told me her name was Josie when she came in carrying a tray of food like she'd done it a hundred times before, chatting easily the second she stepped through the door like the two of us had known each other for years already instead of mere minutes."You need to eat something," she said, setting the tray down carefully beside the bed. "Doctor's orders, and honestly, my own orders too. You look like you haven't had a real, proper meal in weeks, and don't try telling me otherwise."I hadn't, but I didn't say that part out loud. She was younger than me, maybe, with an easy, open smile that didn't match a single thing I'd expected to find anywhere in Ravenwood. She talked while she moved around the room, laying out clean folded clothes across the chair, fixing the heavy curtains so the light filtered in just right, and filling the silence between us before it could even turn heavy and uncomfortable. For a few minutes, just listening to her go on about nothing in particular—the

AURORAI braced myself for his cruelty the second he stepped further into the room.I didn't know exactly what I expected. Shouting, maybe. Or a hand roughly closing around my arm and dragging me out of the bed toward somewhere far worse than this warm, quiet room with its soft blankets and soothing fire. Every single story I'd ever heard whispered about the Kingslayer came rushing back to me all at once, and none chilling fear ran down my spine when I realized that every one of those stories ended in blood, dead bodies, and empty packs. But none of that happened. He didn't raise his voice or even come all the way over to the edge of the bed. He just stopped a few feet away, his dark eyes slowly moving from my face down to my throat and staying there, as if he'd forgotten how to look anywhere else."Where did you get that?" he asked. His voice was low and even, nothing at all like I'd expected from a man with his kind of reputation.I blinked up at him in confusion. "Get what?""The

AURORAI woke up gasping like I'd been pulled up from underwater. For one horrible second I didn't know where I was, and my whole body reacted before my mind could even catch up to it. I could still feel the cold metal of the chains digging into my wrists, still smell the inside of that truck, still hear the engine grinding on and on for hours with no end anywhere in sight. My whole body still ached in the same places it had ached for days.My hand flew to my stomach before I even opened my eyes all the way."No," I said, and then it wasn't a word anymore, as a scream ripped from my throat. "No, no! Where's my baby?! Someone tell me where my baby is!"I didn't recognize the room around me. But what I noticed was the soft blanket pulled up to my chin, a warm fire crackling somewhere close by, and curtains in a deep green shade I'd never seen before in my entire life. None of it made any sense, and none of it mattered, because all I could think about was the small curve under my hand a

ROMANThe box sat on my desk like it was daring me to open it.Eleven years. That's how long it had been locked away in the study, shoved behind old files where I didn't have to look at it every single day. Gideon had brought it up without a word, setting it down on the desk, then leaving just as quietly. He understood more than he let on. He always did. That was part of the reason I kept him around, even when he said things I didn't want to hear.I sat there for a long moment before I even touched it. The wood was darker than I remembered, scratched along one corner, and there was a thin layer of dust across the lid, which was evidence of exactly how long it had sat there untouched.I ran my thumb over the small brass lock, then pulled the key from my pocket. My hand shook slightly, just enough that I noticed it, and noticing it annoyed me more than the shaking itself did.I wasn't a man who shook. Not anymore. Not since I'd made myself into someone everyone called a monster."Get it

  • The Kingslayer’s Forbidden Mate   Chapter 5

ROMAN I never usually bothered with the prisoners the traders brought to settle debts. I let Gideon handle the sorting, the counting, all of it. Faces and names always blurred together in my mind after a while, and most of them meant nothing to me beyond a number in a file somewhere. But something made me walk the line myself that night. I concluded it was just because the last shipment had come in short, and I wanted to see for myself what these traders thought they could get away with. That was what I believed until the wind shifted and a scent hit me like a fist straight to the gut.My wolf surged awake so violently that I nearly stumbled. I hadn’t felt him react like that in years.Gideon noticed. "What is it?" he said, coming to stand beside me.I didn't answer him. I couldn't have explained it even if I tried. It wasn't a scent I recognized exactly, but something about it pulled at me anyway, so sharp and insistent like my whole body had decided something my mind hadn't."Roman
