Chapter 5 A Werewolf!

The Last Alpha Chapter 5

Madam Camille went from an afternoon meeting to a three-day trip to Seattle. She noticed that the OB-Gyne doctors from the different towns need proper documentation for the next quarterly budgetary of hospitals and clinics.

I don’t have no choice as her apprentice. I kept on guarding the pharmacy after my workload in the delivery room. Fortunately, those interns are sensible in their work, and I can give my trust them.

Madam said they will only last until next month because they’re already a year in this hospital. I can feel the gloom lurking in the shadows of the delivery room if they will go.

However, I’m still thankful that they give me an opportunity to be with them, even for a short period of time. When holding the pen in my hand, a sudden static makes me look at the door.

There’s no one in there, but my heart is pounding loudly. I don’t know why I was like this when I met Hardurlf at the pub. This is affecting my work!

“Sir Evan, someone is looking at you,” a student calls me from a distance. I nod before going out of the clinic. And when I did, Katy and Kayden were here!

My eyes grew more prominent than before. “Hey?!”

I forgot my etiquette when I looked at these two. Kayden seems good in his oversized shirt as Katy is dazzling in her casual dress.

“Gosh, sorry we didn’t inform you we’re coming to Forks—“

“Didn’t you have work tomorrow?”

Kayden chuckles at me as he puts his hand on my shoulder, slightly squeezing my muscle. “Cous, tomorrow is a holiday… so it’s up to us if we will go to work or not.”

I paused for a second. “Oh. I’m so busy this whole week because my supervisor is not around.”

Satisfaction draws on Katy and Kayden’s facial expressions. It’s already three in the afternoon, but Madam is still not here. She said she would make it, but it seems I need to send her a notice.

“It’s your first week, but we will sleep here for two nights because we will go home Sunday evening.”

I decided to continue our conversation outside the hospital premise for a more casual talk.

“My boss is not here. I cannot decide about this one. However, the both of you can occupy our home in the meantime.”

Katy and Kayden look at each other before finally gazing at me with interrogating eyes.

“We will talk to your boss since Seattle is far from here.” My jaw would likely fall on the ground after hearing his inane suggestion. I scratch my hair as I look at Katy’s crazy reaction.

“Why?” she asked with a laughing tone.

I cannot speak up for myself because Madam is not here.

“It’s not for me to decide about this. I’m new here, so I need to prove to Madam that I can do my work efficiently—“

My words halted from the tip of my tongue when I saw a familiar vehicle. The door opens, and it is Madam with her shoulder bag and piles of paper from Seattle.

“Excuse me for a moment,” I said to my cousins and rushed to Madam.

She’s a little bit startled by my presence. “Madam, please let me lend you a hand.”

“Evan, you have keen eyes to see me here at the parking lot. How was your day?”

“I am fine, ma’am and everything are cleared. Before I forget, I am here because my cousins from Seattle and I are having a conversation. My sincere apologies for talking during work hours.”

She looks at them as Katy and Kayden go to us. They greet Madam Cabello with a smile on their face. At first glance, Madam looks at them from head to toe.

“Hello, Ma’am, we are very sorry for talking with Evan during his duty hours. W-We have to go.” Katy stutters and gives some awkward gestures to Kayden.

However, Madam gives a beam to us. It feels like a ray of hope this time.

“Are you here for a vacation?”

Kayden gently shakes his head as a sign of a positive response.

“Tomorrow is a holiday. You can spend your time with your cousin, Evan. They’re from Seattle, so travelling from there to here is exhausting. Don’t worry. I will reward you for taking my position in my absence.”

My pupils dilated when I looked at them. I cannot believe what I have heard from her! My pearly white teeth resurface in a sweet smile.

Madam walks to the hospital door, and my cousins wave at me before they go. My lips are pale in this ambivalent moment.

When Madam puts her bag on the chair, I sort the papers. “How was your meeting, Madam?”

“It went well. My apologies, Evan, for the urgent meeting. You can spend your day with your cousins. I will order today to occupy your slot tomorrow until Sunday.”

“B-But, Madam—“

She cuts me off. “No buts, Evan. You’re still at the point of adjusting in our community. Take time to familiarize the small town. Oh, by the way, did you give those medical kits to Hardurlf?”

Her question got me torn between the lines. I can feel my lips are heavy in answering her inquiry. Nevertheless, Madam’s stare at me becomes more pressuring.

“Yes, Madam. Ah… Mr Hardurlf left a letter for you.” I get the letter, and Madam reads it silently. I wait for her comment while my hands are sweating in an unknown matter.

“Oh, it seems Mr Hardurlf becomes comfortable with you. It’s your first meet, right?”

I agree with her even though I know it wasn’t our first time meeting each other. Her reaction is priceless, which is why I don’t want to destroy her trust.

“You will meet Mr Hardurlf every Tuesday for his free check-up.” She approves, but my body cannot move a single muscle.

“It’s odd… Hardurlf doesn’t want other nurses here nor volunteers in checking him up. I know that man….” Madam mutters in a corner while checking his records.

My curiosity sinks in again. “Do you know him, Madam?”

She darts her eyes at me with a weak smile on her face. She undoubtedly eludes my question. At the end of my shift, I still don’t get the proper answer to my question.

I sent a text message to Katy that I would go home. She didn’t reply until the taxi brought me home. Their car is parked outside the residence. I go inside our home, and the two are occupied.

Their cooking for dinner.

“Woah. You guys startled me.”

Katy is cooking the spaghetti sauce while Kayden is washing the pasta in the sink.

When I go inside the room, I take off my clothes and join them in the kitchen.

“It’s been so many years since we did this, right?” Kayden breaks the silence between us. Katy and I gaze at each other, then chuckle at his question.

“Yeah, so we will drink tonight at a pub near the Subway.”

“Oh, that one?” Kayden follows it with an unsure question.

“How about you, pretty boy?”

I scoff when she asks me for confirmation. “You always do ask me all the time. I go where your heart is,” I reply to her as Katy nudges me.

After eating our dinner, I notice that Kayden is going inside grandma’s room. While Katy is busy washing the dishes, I follow him inside.

“I saw what you sent to Katy last time. Can I personally see it?”

The coldness crawls from my feet to my spine like a drop of chilling water. I open the cabinet and get grandma’s diary. I know he will be shocked when Kayden holds it in front of me.

I let him read and check the last page. He also reviews the canine and fur. For his further investigation, Kayden takes it off from the tape. He wears a glove before holding it against the light.

Kayden is an inspector, so he knows what to do, and his verdict is reliable. Later on, Katy goes inside the room. She leans on the door with her arms wrapping across her chest.

“This canine is true, also for the fur.”

They look at me as Katy heaves a sigh. “Evan, grandma had dementia before she died. Maybe she took it in the forest. There are so many wild animals out there. You know you must be tired; since you’re alone in here. People typically overthink when they are all alone.”

Kayden puts back the canine and fur on the back page. He holds my shoulder and gives a slight smile.

“You only miss grandma. That’s why everything here is a big deal to you. Why we should go to the pub? I need to make the most out of this once in a blue moon opportunity.”

Katy kisses my head before giving me some excellent cloth to wear. They want to grab a moderate drink tonight, so I will go with the flow since I have legal consent from Madam.

She is right. I also need to familiarize this place again because it’s been so many years before I went back here. When everything is ready, Kayden grabs his car key as we go inside the vehicle.

Eight in the evening is too early for a drink. Moreover, when we are jamming inside the car, a police car beside the road piques our attention. My cousin stops the car and goes outside.

“Good evening, Inspector Salazar, sir,” he humbly greets the Sherriff with his identification card.

“Good evening, Sherriff Christian in duty.”

“Can I ask what happened, sir?” Katy and I get out of the car when a wolf is dead on the side of the road.

“This is the third time we’ve encountered a dead wolf caused by a hit and run.”

I can feel the fear in the air. The rumours are true. The wolves are lurking around the town.

“Please, if you encountered a wolf here. Don’t go out of your vehicle or call the police station, so we can help you when you’re in trouble. These predators are so dangerous—especially at night.”

Sherriff Christian darts his eyes at me. “It seems you’re Evan that Travis mentioned to me.”

“Oh, yes. Travis is my father, and Evan is my cousin, sir.”

Amusement filled his facial reaction. “What a small world then? Please go home early because we will set a curfew for the people of Forks.” We all agree to his words as we go inside the car.

When Kayden parks the car, Katy and I go inside the pub. There’s a minimal count of people inside… maybe because of what Sherriff says. Kayden goes to the front bar and orders drinks for us tonight.

“Maybe we should go home early.” He gives the first shot to Katy before rotating the glass of Jack Daniels and Coca-Cola. The drink would likely burn my throat; I don’t drink whiskey, but for tonight. I will.

The first night didn’t go well. We’re forced to go home as soon as Sherriff goes to the pub and announces an urgent curfew because of the wolves sighting of local hunters.

Everyone literally freaked out when they’ve heard his news. Kayden takes home the Jack Daniels with disappointment in his eyes.

ANOTHER night for us opens another opportunity for our bonding. Before, we always went to different places, but when we got our job, It was now challenging in giving way to fun like this.

We go again to that pub, and luckily… I don’t see Hardurlf here. It’s only six in the afternoon, but we still seize the time because Sherriff orders an eleven in the evening curfew around Forks.

“What if werewolves are true?”

Katy suddenly laughs at me. “Gosh! I told you not to think about it. Wolves are migrating to Washington again from Canada to hunt for food. You shouldn’t be thinking about Lycanthropes.”

Kayden breathes heavily before drinking his beer. “Their only legends told my grandma. When your parents died, grandma always told us that your parents were killed by a werewolf. Police didn’t believe it, and the real cause was a malfunction of the car. I’ve reviewed it before… that’s why grandma becomes fond of telling us her imagination.”

It shatters my heart into tiny pieces because Kayden is right. I took the last shot until I could not feel my feet touching the ground.

“Are you sure you’re okay in here, cous?” Katy asked me with her blushing face.

“You’re drunk… let’s go home,” I suggested, but Kayden suddenly went outside—picking up a call.

We disregard his personal transaction as we continue to drink. “What if they are true?”

“Then send me a selfie with a werewolf. So I will believe you.”

We burst into laughter because of her crazy jester! Katy is laughing her ass out of the pub.

“Sir, here is your complimentary drink.” We look at the bartender.

“T-Thank you.” The DJ played an electronic sound for us. Katy and I dance like no tomorrow.

However, when I can feel my body giving up, Kayden shows up with a cranky face.

“Katy, we need to go home.”

I feel the alcohol evaporates from my body. “What happened?” I inquired him.

“Work-related issue. I’m so sorry, Evan, but I will call a taxi for you. I need to be there in two hours.”

“What happened?” Katy asked.

“Our chief got into an accident. We need to go back to Seattle right now.” I pressed my lips when Kayden looked at me with pure disappointment.

“Please accept my apology this time.” Terror filled his eyes as we went outside and waited for a taxi. Katy goes inside the car with Kayden. He pays for my fare.

My vision is distorted because of the alcohol! We are near my house this time, but the taxi slows down. The driver goes outside and scratches his nape.

“What happened, sir?”

“The tire explodes. Sir, can you wait for a moment? I will call for help.”

If my memory serves me right, my house is two hundred meters away. I open the door because there’s no one in here. We’re in the middle of the road.

“Sir, please take your time. I will walk home.”

“C-Can I assist you?” he stutters, but I don’t want. I walk in the dark night as the wind rustles in my ears. The woods are tall, and the falling dried leaves crunched in my steps.

I’m now near my house since I can see the light from our post. I continue walking to the next lamppost, but something eerie gives me chills.

S-Something in the dark is watching me! I freeze in the middle of the road beneath a tall tree near an abandoned house. My teeth are chattering even though I don’t see someone with me.

A s-snarl behind me…. I gradually tilt my head to see if a wolf is behind. I can now piss in my pants! What the hell?! An amber-coloured eye behind the bush is locking its eyes on me!

The light from the next lamppost gives illumination to my dark sight.
