Chapter 4 Beware of Wolves

The Last Alpha Chapter 4

I’m so thankful when Ma’am Cabello lifts me up from being down this time. I start my day at her office, but one of the patients later delivers a healthy baby boy. I cannot hide my ecstatic emotion when I see the mother smiling at her newborn.

“Do you have any name for the healthy baby boy, ma’am?“ I asked her while carrying the papers for his information.

She gazes at his baby boy before looking into my eyes. “I go for Jeff….“

A second after I heard her request—I didn’t hesitate to suggest a name that was familiar with the sound.

“How about we name him… Jeffrey?“

The delivery room becomes quiet for a couple of seconds. I got a slight palpitation for what I suggested.

The baby cries as she breastfeeds it. “It’s fine… I go for Jeffrey,“ she responds wholeheartedly. I remember what I promised to Sir Jeffrey back in VA Hospital with a refreshed smile.

My hand scribbles his name on the datasheet. I leave the delivery room so that other nurses can do their duties. I go to the office where Mrs Cabello is uncomplainingly waiting on her desk.

“It seems your hands are already full on your first day at this community hospital, Evan.“

I give a soft chortle as I sit beside her, then give the datasheet. Mrs Cabello meticulously encodes the data on the computer.

“I bet you already miss your supervisor in Seattle by the name of this newborn,“ she utters without breaking her eyes at the computer screen. I caress my nape when she can even read what I think.

“A little bit, Mrs Cabello. However, I can go to Seattle monthly for reports or even quarterly if the hospital is busy. Sir Jeffrey already agreed with the contract, so we cannot be together for three years.“

She hums at the desk and then tilts her neck in the direction.

“Of course, we need you here. Since my nurses here are all volunteers, and some are practising for their thesis. A community like Forks is not big and so advanced as Seattle. I’m glad the VA sent me an experienced one like you, Mr Evan.“

I can feel my blood rushing through my veins as my face heats up when hearing her warmest compliment towards me. She gives me a bright beam.

“We will talk about it later. You can go back to work.“ I gently shake my head before heading out of the office. That short break time has become one of the unforgettable moments.

I go to the delivery room, and someone is giving birth. I look at the students who are giving their best. The other doctor is there for professional help and ratings.

It went successful. “This is the last delivery for this morning, Evan. Please rest, so I can call you whenever a new patient goes here.“

After hearing it from him, I went to the hospital cafeteria with the students. I don’t want to drink coffee this morning because I want to have a power nap, so I can go for overtime work for my first day.

When I am eating alone on the west side of the cafeteria. I grab my phone and text Katy.

To: Katy

[I saw something peculiar last night.]

I put the phone on the other side of the table before grabbing another bite of this burger. A moment later… it vibrates.

From: Katy

[What was it again this time, cous?]

My hands are sweating if I disclose the information about a wolf’s canine and fur inside her diary.

To: Katy

[I saw wolf canine and furs on the back page.]

I put the phone inside my pocket and went to the storage room. I get a monoblock chair and sit on it. My hands crawl on the gallery, and my eyes aim for that picture with the exact phrase.

When I finally found it. There’s cold air clouding my feet even though the air-conditioning unit is not turned on. Why is it like this? My head keeps saying I’ve been here before; however, it’s been years since I stepped foot in this town.

Katy swiftly saw the picture I had sent to her. My forehead is beading sweats when the iMessage keeps on notifying me that Katy is currently typing. I hate this feeling. A message popped out on the phone screen.

From: Katy

[You know us, we will go there next week! Just a night to be with you. Let’s hang out.]

My lips parted when I realized Katy was not affected by the creepiness of grandma. I sigh heavily before replying to her with a smiling emoji. I turn off my phone and put it on the locker before closing my eyes for a power nap.

How long I’ve been sleeping? Some students are in the storage room, and I ask one of them.

“Hello, what time is it?“

“Sir Evan, it’s quarter to one in the afternoon.“ I breathe relief because I have set my nap for only fifteen minutes. I go out of the storage room with my scrub suit.

Madam Cabello waves at me from the other aisle. I walk toward her, and she gives me a gentle smile.

“Evan, thank goodness you’re here. I have an urgent meeting with the other doctors this afternoon. Can you be the duty nurse at the pharmacy?“

I paused for a couple of seconds before remembering the pharmacy at the front desk.

“Ma’am, is it at the front?“

“Exactly. There’s someone at the front of the hospital, but she’s absent for today since she has an urgent family matter. I trust you this time around, if you will… you can wait for the next shift this six in the evening.“

I cannot utter a single word at her. My head instantly shakes, and she pats my shoulder before leaving the hospital. I keep my slow pace to the pharmacy. Forks is not that enormous like Seattle.

When I sit on the chair, Madam Cabello walks in my direction.

“Before I forget, someone needs some free bandages and antiseptics. These are for him, Evan. He typically goes here four or five in the afternoon.“

“I got it, Madam. Please have a safe drive ahead.“

I keep myself busy sorting the medicines and other hospital things in the front bar because the interns are occupied in the delivery room with the other doctor. Some patients are here at the pharmacy asking me if these medicines are available outside.

“Yes, you can buy this outside if you want, ma’am. However, we have these at the hospital.“

She looks at me with reluctant eyes. I patiently waited for her reply since her actions were hesitant. These medicines are pricy for her status.

“Maybe I need to go outside for these medicines. Thank you so much.“

“It’s my pleasure, ma’am. Please have a nice day ahead.“

After looking sorting the papers and other medical supplies. A silhouette of muscular mangoes in my direction. Since the sunlight directly hits and reflects on the white tiles.

My body shudders in his presence!

“It’s nice to meet you again.“ I feel like my lips are pale when he stands before me.

My body still had the same reaction when I met him at the pub. His amber eyes give a different vibe and colour like a wolf in hunting mode. I’ve never seen eyes like that in my life.

My parched throat cannot even give a typical peristaltic move. I could feel my stomach twisting when he leaned on the window.

“Hello? Are you listening?“ His voice can even make the hell out of me. I don’t drink coffee, but my palpitation is on a different level! I shake my head before holding the small Tupperware.

“Y-Yes. Here are the items for you, Mr Hardurlf.“

He opens it and then takes some of the antiseptics. When he opens his shirt, I see a fresh wound with some blood on it.

I react when he undoubtedly put some with even flinching.

“Please proceed to the clinic, so I can clean it for you.“ Even if I don’t want to help him, I just utter the words I don’t want to say. It feels like someone is also present in my body.

I gulp when he walks to the clinic while holding the Tupperware in his hands. Luckily, someone at the clinic is present as I go to him.

“Hello dear, can you please go to the Pharmacy because a patient needs me today,“ I plead to him as he agrees with me and then leaves us inside the clinic?

My eyes automatically go wide when Hardurlf takes off his shirt. His body is full of scars and even fresh wounds. I wear a disposable glove and pick up the sterilized stainless steel surgical hemostat.

I clipped a soaked cotton ball in betamide as I applied it to his three fresh wounds.

“Where did you get these wounds?“ I asked out of my curiosity.

He gives a slight chuckle while looking at his wounds. “These? Somewhere out there.“

I heave a sigh in his annoying response. “Seriously?“

“Do you want me to get serious with you?“ I don’t want to assume in his double edge reply to me. I am a little bit flatter than Hardurlf and am also an outgoing person.

“Well, I got into some trouble lately.“

“Then I will set an appointment with Madam Cabello for your situation—“

Hardurlf speaks before I even finish what I am saying, “why should I set another appointment with Mrs Cabello… if you can cater for my situation?“

My face becomes fiery as I can feel it crawling on my cheeks and ears. Hardulf doesn’t break his stare at my face, even though I cannot look into his amber-coloured eyes.

I feel the shame sipping in my skin and reputation. I am a straight man, but when Hardurlf is throwing me lines like that. I can feel my knees wobble in his dominance.

“My sincere apologies, but I am in the delivery room. I take her position right now because Madam’s at a meeting today—“

“Then I will tell her personally. Besides, you’re new here. Don’t you want to make friends with me?“

I give him a weak smile before pressing hard on the last wound on his right arm. However, I am confused why he is not feeling pain even though I am applying pressure on his fresh wound? Does this man have congenital insensitivity to pain?

However, I got another cotton that was soaked in alcohol. At first, he is not reacting because his attention is on his phone screen. When I apply the antiseptic, he hisses in the tingling pain.

Phew! He doesn’t have that abnormality. It’s a relief.

“Ouch. You’re hard on me, mate.“ When I heard this mate thing. My heart throbs so loud that I feel like I’ve been struck by lightning. There’s something about him that I cannot comprehend.

“Thank you for this, Evan. Beware of wolves at night when you go home, see you again,“ he said before leaving the room.
