Chapter 3: Happy Anniversary

The rain refused to stop.

It poured relentlessly against the floor-to-ceiling windows, turning the city outside into a grim blur of flashing lights and dark shadows.

Lily had fallen asleep on the living room couch sometime after midnight, exhausted from the emotional storm.

My father was in the kitchen, staring silently out the window with a cold cup of coffee in his hand.

They had both kept their word, staying right by my side through the darkest hours of my life.

For the first time in seven years, I was profoundly grateful not to be alone.

As the first pale light of dawn began to break through the clouds, I stood in the dining room one last time.

The white candles had long since burned themselves into ugly pools of hardened wax on the tablecloth.

The anniversary steak sat ruined and cold under the warmer.

On the floor, the spilled red wine had dried into the white marble, staining the stone a dark, permanent crimson.

It looked exactly as if the room had witnessed a violent crime.

In a way, it had.

Suddenly, the heavy click of the front door unlocking cut through the morning silence.

A familiar pair of footsteps echoed through the foyer.

Slow. Careful. Almost hesitant.

Ethan.

He walked into the dining room and stopped dead in his tracks.

His expensive black tuxedo from the gala was damp from the rain, and his bowtie hung loosely around his collar.

The familiar scent of his cologne immediately filled the air between us.

It was still the exact same luxury brand I had saved up to buy him for his birthday three years ago.

For a brief, agonizing moment, neither of us spoke.

His eyes slowly traveled across the wreckage of the room.

The untouched dinner. The shattered wineglass.

And finally, his gaze settled on the center of the table, where my platinum wedding ring sat mocking him in the gray morning light.

“Claire…” his voice was much quieter than usual, completely stripped of his usual corporate confidence.

“I can explain.”

I looked at him calmly, my eyes swollen from a night of silent tears, though my voice remained steady.

“Can you?”

He took a slow step forward, his hands half-raised.

“What you saw on the television last night… it wasn’t the whole story.”

I folded my arms tightly across my chest, keeping the physical distance between us.

“Then tell me the whole story, Ethan.”

He opened his mouth to speak, but then he closed it again, his jaw tightening.

The silence stretched between us like an ocean.

I almost smiled a bitter, hollow smile.

He had rehearsed excuses for the media, but he had no truth left for his wife.

“Ethan,” I whispered, the question tearing from the rawest part of my soul. “When did you stop loving me?”

His head lifted sharply, his eyes widening.

“What?”

“I asked you a simple question,” I repeated, staring directly into his handsome, unfamiliar face. “When did you stop loving me?”

His eyes shifted away from mine, unable to hold my gaze.

“It’s not that simple, Claire.”

I nodded slowly, the confirmation cutting deeper than any physical blow.

“So… you did stop.”

“I didn’t say that.”

“You didn’t have to.”

Another suffocating silence fell over the room.

It was the kind of quiet that hurts far more than shouting ever could.

He rubbed a tired hand across his face, looking older than his years.

“Vanessa isn’t what you think she is.”

A broken, humorless laugh escaped my lips.

“I watched you stand before the entire country and tell them she owns your heart, Ethan. What exactly am I supposed to think?”

He ran a frustrated hand through his dark hair.

“The interview got out of control. The reporters ambushed us.”

“You could’ve corrected them,” I said, the tears I had fought all morning finally threatening to spill over.

“I know.”

“You could’ve told them you were a married man.”

“I know.”

“You could’ve said you loved your wife.”

His lips parted slightly, but no words came out.

That was my answer. That silence was the definitive end of my youth.

I blinked the tears away, forcing them back down.

No. I would not cry in front of him anymore. He didn't deserve my grief.

“I spent the entire afternoon preparing this anniversary,” I said, gesturing toward the cold table.

“I cooked your favorite meal. I bought you a gift. I actually believed tonight would be different.”

His shoulders slumped forward.

“I’m sorry, Claire.”

I stared at him, incredulous.

Seven years of marriage. Thousands of shared memories. Countless sacrifices.

And it was all reduced to a clinical apology.

“You know what’s funny?” I asked, my voice cracking.

He looked up at me, his eyes filled with a sudden dread.

“I kept blaming your job. I thought your success had just changed you, made you busy.”

“I never once imagined… that there was simply another woman.”

He stepped closer, stretching his arm out.

“It wasn’t planned, Claire. It just happened.”

“Cheating rarely is planned,” I replied coldly.

“Claire, please. I never wanted to hurt you.”

“But you did,” I said, looking straight into his guilty eyes. “And the worst part is, you hurt me without even thinking twice.”

He reached out, his fingers brushing against mine to grab my hand.

Instinctively, I took a sharp step back, pulling away from his touch.

His hand froze in midair, completely empty.

That tiny, defensive movement from me seemed to shock him more than anything I had actually said.

He lowered his hand slowly, his expression crumbling slightly.

“I still care about you, Claire.”

The words didn't comfort me; they made me furious.

“You don’t destroy the people you care about, Ethan,” I said, my voice hardening.

“You protect them. You choose them. You don’t stand beside another woman on television while your wife waits at home with dinner growing cold.”

Before he could respond, the sound of heavy footsteps came from the stairs.

My father walked into the dining room, his face an unreadable mask of anger.

Lily followed right behind him, holding my packed suitcase in her hand.

Ethan froze, realizing for the first time that my family was here, witnessing his shame.

“Ethan,” my father said, his voice dropping into a low, dangerous rumble. “You need to step away from my daughter.”

Ethan tightened his jaw, trying to regain his billionaire composure.

“Sir, this is between Claire and me. We are trying to talk.”

“There is nothing left to talk about,” I interrupted, stepping past Ethan toward my sister.

I took the handle of the suitcase from Lily's hand.

I looked at Ethan one last time, remembering the broken college boy I had once bought sandwiches for, and mourning him.

“Happy anniversary, Ethan.”

I turned my back on him, walking toward the front door with my family shielding me.

He didn’t try to stop me.

He simply stood in the wreckage of our dining room, watching my footsteps disappear down the hallway.

Only after the heavy front door clicked shut behind us did I let myself breathe.

The rain continued to beat down on the driveway as we walked to my father's car, but the suffocating trap of that house was finally behind me.
