On our seventh wedding anniversary, I waited with a candlelit dinner, believing my husband would finally choose me over his work. Instead, I watched him on live television holding another woman’s hand while the world celebrated them as the perfect couple. That night, I stopped being a wife. I signed the divorce papers, walked away with nothing, and disappeared from the life I had sacrificed everything to build. Three years later, I return as a powerful CEO with a new name, a fortune of my own, and no intention of looking back. Now the man who shattered my heart wants another chance. But he isn’t the only one hiding secrets. As old lies unravel and shocking truths come to light, he realizes too late that losing me was the biggest mistake of his life. Some betrayals deserve forgiveness. Others deserve regret. And this time, I’m choosing myself.

Chapter 1: The Anniversary

The dining room glowed beneath the warm, amber light of crystal chandeliers.

Soft violin music drifted quietly through hidden speakers, filling the empty spaces of the large room.

On the table, candles flickered gently, casting long shadows across the pristine white tablecloth I had spent the entire afternoon preparing.

Seven white roses rested perfectly in the center, their fragrance light and sweet.

Seven years. Seven anniversaries. Seven years of believing that love, patience, and silent sacrifice were enough to hold a marriage together.

I glanced at the grand grandfather clock ticking against the wall. 7:00 p.m.

The precise time we had agreed on. My chest tightened as the minute hand ticked past the hour.

He was late. Again.

“It’s fine,” I whispered to the empty room, forcing a small, hollow smile. “He is just caught in traffic. He will be here.”

Ethan had always been a busy man. As the CEO of Carter Enterprises, his life belonged to meetings, late-night business dinners, international flights, and demanding investors.

Over the last seven years, I had grown used to eating cold meals by myself.

I had learned to celebrate birthdays and holidays alone, comforting myself with the thought that he was building a future for us.

But tonight was supposed to be different. It was our seventh anniversary. It had to be different.

I smoothed down the sleek silk of my navy-blue dress, a piece I had bought specifically because he once said he loved the color on me.

Adjusting my silver necklace, I reached for my phone with a trembling hand.

Me: Are you almost home? Dinner is ready.

I stared at the screen. The small grey font underneath the bubble changed instantly from Sent to Delivered.

I waited. One minute passed. Then five. Then ten.

The three typing dots never appeared. There was no reply.

I sighed heavily, the weight of disappointment pressing down on my shoulders.

Setting the phone aside, I walked into the dark, modern kitchen to check on the food.

His favorite ribeye steak rested perfectly on the warmer, cooked exactly how he liked it.

The mashed potatoes were still hot and creamy, and the expensive red wine had been breathing in its crystal decanter for almost an hour.

Everything in the house was absolutely perfect.

Everything except my husband.

The doorbell never rang. The sound of his key turning in the lock never came.

Instead, the sudden, violent vibration of my phone against the marble countertop made my heart leap into my throat.

I rushed over and grabbed it, hoping to see his name on the screen.

It wasn’t Ethan. It was my younger sister, Lily.

Lily: Turn on the TV. Now.

I frowned at the screen, my brow furrowing in confusion. Why would she tell me to watch TV right now?

Before I could type a reply, another message flashed on the screen, the urgency practically radiating from the words.

Lily: Please… just do it. Put on the entertainment news channel.

A strange, icy chill suddenly ran through my body, starting from the back of my neck and pooling in my stomach.

Without thinking, I picked up the television remote. My fingers felt numb as I pressed the power button.

The large screen lit up, filling the quiet dining room with bright lights and loud, cheerful noise.

“Welcome to the City’s Annual Charity Gala!” the host’s voice boomed.

The camera swept across a sea of high society—celebrities in flashing lights, powerful politicians, and wealthy billionaires.

I barely paid attention, my eyes scanning the crowd blindly.

I was just about to turn it off, thinking Lily had made a mistake, when the camera suddenly cut to a close-up.

The screen froze on a face I knew better than my own.

My husband. Ethan Carter.

He looked impossibly handsome, commanding the room in a tailored black tuxedo that fitted his broad shoulders perfectly.

His dark hair was styled flawlessly, and a rare, charismatic smile played on his lips.

A sudden wave of relief washed over me, and a genuine smile spread across my face.

“So that’s where you are,” I whispered, laughing softly to myself.

He had gotten trapped at a charity event. He must have forgotten to check his phone.

I was about to reach for my phone to tell him I saw him, but my hand froze mid-air.

A beautiful woman stepped gracefully into the camera frame, moving directly to his side.

She was tall, elegant, and wore an emerald green gown that drew everyone's eyes.

Her movements were fluid and practiced, and as the flashing lights hit them, her manicured fingers slipped naturally, intimately, into his hand.

The audience around them erupted into applause.

My smile faded. I frowned, leaning closer to the television screen.

Who was she? Why was she holding his hand like that in public? Why hadn’t he pulled away?

The reporter on screen smiled brightly, holding a microphone out toward them.

“Mr. Carter, Miss Reed! Everyone tonight has been talking about your breathtaking appearance together. The rumors in high society say that wedding bells aren’t very far away for the two of you. Is that true?”

Wedding… bells?

The words echoed in my ears, sounding distorted and surreal.

The room around me seemed to stop breathing.

The gentle hum of the refrigerator, the flickering of the candles, the violin music—everything vanished into a suffocating silence.

The reporter held the microphone closer, waiting. Millions of viewers across the city waited.

And in that cold, empty dining room, so did I.

Ethan looked down at the woman beside him.

The hard, stoic expression he usually wore completely melted away.

His eyes softened with a deep, profound tenderness—a look I hadn’t seen directed at me for years.

Then, he looked back at the camera and smiled. It was a warm, genuine smile that I thought belonged entirely to me.

“Yes,” Ethan said.

One word. Just one syllable.

Yet it carried enough weight to shatter seven years of marriage, seven years of loyalty, and every single dream I had built for our future.

The television crowd erupted into ecstatic cheers and shouts of congratulations.

The woman—Vanessa Reed—laughed happily, leaning her head against his shoulder as Ethan wrapped a possessive arm around her slender waist.

Someone in the crowd shouted, “You two are perfect together!”

Perfect. Together.

I stood completely frozen in the center of my beautiful, useless dining room.

The candles behind me continued to burn, throwing mocking light across the empty chairs.

The expensive dinner continued to grow cold.

In the hallway cabinet, the anniversary gift I had carefully wrapped earlier that morning suddenly felt heavier than stone, a monument to a lie.

The reporter laughed gaily on screen.

“But Mr. Carter, what about your wife? The media and the public have always believed you were happily married to a private woman.”

For a brief, agonizing second, my heart dared to hope. A desperate, pathetic spark ignited in my chest.

Maybe he would deny it. Maybe this was a publicity stunt for his company. Maybe he would explain that it was all a misunderstanding. Maybe—

“There are relationships that exist only on paper,” Ethan answered, his voice completely calm, steady, and devoid of any remorse.

“My heart has belonged to Vanessa for a very long time. The paperwork is just a formality we are clearing up.”

Absolute silence crashed over me.

My fingers lost all their strength. The crystal wineglass I had been holding slipped from my hand.

It seemed to fall in slow motion, catching the light of the chandelier before crashing violently against the white marble floor.

Smash.

The glass shattered into a thousand jagged pieces.

The dark red wine spread quickly across the white stone, staining it, looking frighteningly like pooling blood.

I stared at the television screen as the broadcast transitioned to another couple.

No tears came to my eyes. No screams escaped my lips.

My throat felt tightly constricted, completely dry.

The warmth left my body entirely, leaving me numb, cold, and hollowed out.

Only one single thought echoed clearly inside the empty chambers of my mind.

So… this is how my marriage ends
