Chapter 4

作者: Bright Lights
I followed the voices and saw a middle-aged couple dripping in jewelry swagger into the office.

They dropped onto one of the couches as though they owned the place and immediately started taking off their shoes.

The woman pointed at me. "You. Make me some premium green tea."

Her husband had already stuck a cigarette between his lips and was reaching for his lighter.

I frowned, took it from his hand before he could light up, and set it on the table.

"Sorry, there's no smoking in the office. Do you have an appointment?"

The woman actually laughed, planting her hands on her hips.

"Do you have any idea who we are? We're your boss's in-laws! These earrings cost over two hundred grand. And the Rolex on my husband's wrist? He bought that too. Five hundred grand!"

She thrust all five fingers into my face, practically spraying me as she spoke.

"You'd better take good care of us. Maybe we'll tell him to give you a raise and a promotion. Otherwise, we'll have him fire you."

So these were Yara's parents.

My heart sank.

I hadn't realized Caleb could be this generous when he wanted to impress her family.

When I'd once asked him to pick out a nice outfit for my mother before meeting her, he'd flown into a rage. He said he had his pride, and if a family member or partner needed gifts to maintain a relationship, then they weren't worth having.

Liar.

When I didn't react with the fear she'd clearly expected, Mrs. Cole's expression turned awkward.

Then she grabbed the kettle and hurled the water at me.

"Are you deaf?"

I had no time to dodge. Cold water drenched me from head to toe, leaving me frozen in shock.

The moment my coworkers saw what she'd done, they surged forward, furious.

"I'd like to see which one of you dares touch them!"

Caleb's voice cut through the room.

He had finally arrived with Yara.

There was still grease around the corners of her mouth. She had obviously just finished breakfast.

Not long ago, I'd eaten a piece of chocolate during overtime because my blood sugar had dropped, and Caleb had torn into me for slacking off on company time.

Now there was no mistaking just how differently he treated her.

His gaze swept over my dripping hair, and instead of asking what had happened, he glared at me.

"Why are you still standing there? Go clean yourself up. You're embarrassing yourself."

Then his entire expression changed as he turned to Yara's parents. Smiling ingratiatingly, he moved over to support them by the arms.

"Mom, Dad, why did you come all the way to the office? I told you we'd pick you up at the hotel, and then we'd go look at places together. Yara and I both took the day off so we could spend it with you."

I'd seen Caleb negotiate with billionaires without ever looking this eager to please.

Everyone around us looked stunned.

Caleb was a notorious workaholic who practically never took a day off.

And now he was skipping work just to entertain Yara's parents?

One by one, my coworkers turned sympathetic eyes toward me.

I could only watch with bitter amusement.

Once the four of them left, I told everyone I was resigning and wanted to finish handing over my work before the end of the day.

They panicked at first. With my mother gone and my relationship falling apart, they were afraid I might do something drastic.

Only after I explained that I had accepted a position with a major company overseas did they finally relax.

Meanwhile, Yara spent the entire day showing off online.

Her first post showed the $1.5 million luxury condo Caleb had bought her parents.

The second showed the $3,000 massage chair he'd bought them.

More posts followed.

By the ninth, she had uploaded a photo of Caleb personally washing her parents' feet after they'd gotten tired from walking.

Finally, she put together a nine-photo collage.

[Mom and Dad are very happy with the husband I picked. So filial!]

He certainly was.

If Caleb had shown my mother even half that much care, he wouldn't have deliberately crawled along on the way to the hospital and cost her the chance to survive.

It was almost time to leave when Caleb and Yara finally returned.

Caleb always made a round through the office before heading home, so I'd deliberately waited for him.

When I knocked and entered his office, Yara was standing behind his chair, massaging his shoulders.

Caleb froze.

He immediately brushed her hands away and lowered his voice as he explained, "Yara's parents aren't bad people. Her mom didn't mean to throw water on you. And everything I bought them was just a high-quality knockoff. The condo was a reward for Yara, too. That way she can focus on her work without worrying about anything else."

The excuses were so ridiculous that I almost laughed.

"It's fine. You're their son-in-law. Of course you should take care of your wife's parents."

Caleb paused.

He had clearly expected a fight and had come prepared to explain himself first, even soften his tone to head me off.

But when I genuinely showed no reaction, his brows drew together instead.

"Stop being passive-aggressive. If you have something to say, just say it."

I nodded.

"Actually, there is something I need from you."

A smug look crossed his face.

"So you do want something. Then stop pretending you don't care. Whatever it is, I'll give it to you."

I pulled out my resignation letter and placed it in front of him.

"Sign it."

One corner of Caleb's blanket had slipped aside.Underneath, blood had soaked through a large section of the sheets. The wound on his wrist was still seeping, and from the amount of blood beneath him, it was obvious he'd cut himself some time ago.No wonder his face had been so pale, his voice barely more than a whisper. The nurse immediately called for help, and he was rushed into emergency treatment. Even after they took him away, the metallic smell of blood seemed to linger in my nose.In the end, the blood loss was too severe.Caleb died.As his only remaining family, Xavier came to handle the arrangements. When Caleb's ashes were handed to him, he turned around and dropped the urn straight into a trash can.My fingers curled slightly, but I said nothing.I simply turned and walked away. After seven years together, staying until the end was more than enough. Not long after I took my former coworkers overseas with me, I heard that Yara's condition had worsened before her case ever m

Xavier's expression changed instantly. Panic flashed across his face as he pulled me into a crushing hug."I'm sorry. I never thought Caleb would be that disgusting, that he'd treat you so heartlessly. I swear I didn't mean for any of this to happen. "I got revenge for you! Look at what happened to Caleb. And Yara too. I promise she'll spend the rest of her life behind bars. I'm already making them pay for what they did to you and your mom!"Watching him shove all the blame onto everyone but himself only made me sick.I tore myself out of his arms."You got what you wanted. Caleb's life is ruined because of you. What reason do you have to keep pretending now?"Xavier's eyes filled with tears."Yvette, I liked you first. I was the one who saw you first!"The year Caleb started college, his father came to visit him. I secretly came along. You were sitting in class by the window. You saw me outside and smiled at me."He took you from me. After that, he did everything he could to keep me

Xavier froze, then blinked at me with an innocent expression."Yvette, what are you talking about? Just because I'd take a little satisfaction in Caleb getting what was coming to him, that makes me some kind of monster?"The harmless look on his face sent a chill racing up my spine."There was something I could never figure out. Why was Yara so determined to cling to Caleb? Why was she so fixated on getting rid of me? And how did she know exactly what he liked well enough to win him over so easily?"Xavier rubbed his chin thoughtfully."Maybe it was coincidence. Or maybe she'd done her homework because she wanted to land a rich guy."I gave a humorless smile."Really? Then explain something to me. Yara grew up poor. Where did she get the nerve to scheme her way into that much of Caleb's money? And once she had all that money, why come back and provoke him? She was practically asking to get herself killed."Xavier nodded solemnly."People who suddenly come into more money than they know

The document was a transfer agreement handing the company over to Yara, complete with Caleb's signature. After what had happened with my resignation letter, I wasn't exactly surprised that Caleb had managed to sign something like this too.Yara was bold, and Caleb was an idiot.Thank God I'd gotten out when I did. Otherwise, I'd probably be the one cleaning up this disaster too.Caleb let out a furious roar and lunged for the document."It doesn't count! I signed it without knowing what it was. It's not valid!"Yara looked completely unfazed."You signed it the day we got married. I asked if you'd give me the company, and you said yes."Caleb's face flushed red."That was a joke!"Yara looked at him as though he were something she'd scraped off the bottom of her shoe."A joke? Caleb, the only reason you're in this mess is because you couldn't make up your mind about what you wanted. You brought this on yourself. If you'd just stayed with me instead of running after Yvette, I never woul

Caleb clearly hadn't expected me to agree. His head snapped up, disbelief all over his face. But I wasn't doing it for him.I was thinking about the employees who had been with the company for years. Realistically, many of them were older now. If the company collapsed, starting over somewhere else wouldn't be easy.I left Caleb to his surprise and went straight to Natalie.I asked for permission to build a team of my own and return home to recruit a group of experienced employees.Natalie trusted me completely. The moment she heard I planned to bring in people as capable as I was, she lit up and immediately submitted the proposal to headquarters.Headquarters took it seriously too. The request was approved almost at once, and I was given a month to put the team together. With everything settled, Caleb and I flew back together. At the airport, Xavier suddenly appeared. All his casts were gone. He looked completely recovered, dressed in a tailored suit and looking so polished that I almo

I was a little surprised to see that he'd changed her contact name, though I had no idea when he'd done it.Not that it mattered to me. I had no interest in asking. These days, even the sight of Yara's name seemed to irritate Caleb. His brows knitted together so tightly that anyone looking at him might have thought there was something filthy lying on the table instead of his phone. He genuinely regretted ever hiring her in the first place, much less indulging her the way he had. When he looked up at me, he gave an awkward smile and reached to decline the call."Sorry. Spam."I raised an eyebrow. "Answer it. It might be important."Caleb paused. Then he accepted the call and deliberately put it on speaker.Yara's voice came through, as eager to please as ever."Caleb, you've been overseas for more than two weeks. I miss you so much. I know I was wrong. I promise I won't upset you anymore. Can you please let me come back to the company?"Caleb glanced at me on purpose before clearing his
