Chapter 3

作者: Bright Lights
I lowered my eyes with a bitter smile.

Back when Caleb had put that rule in place, he'd told me it was because he planned to keep me tied to him for the rest of my life and never let me get away.

Now, he was probably dying for me to leave.

As I stepped out of the HR office, I heard my coworkers talking nearby.

"Did you guys see Yara's post? If she hadn't posted the screenshot, I never would've believed Mr. Foster was capable of driving that fast."

"Remember when we were almost late for that bid presentation? I told him to just gun it through a yellow light, and he refused because it wasn't safe. He must really be gone for her."

"No man stands a chance against a girl who knows how to play innocent. But what about Yvette? She's been in love with Mr. Foster for seven years. How is she supposed to take this?"

The moment my name came up, everyone fell silent.

Caleb had always said it looked unprofessional for the CEO to be dating someone inside his own company, so we'd kept our relationship secret for seven years.

Still, love was hard to hide.

Everyone knew how I felt about him, and over the years, they'd often tried to help things along between us.

Their kindness was one of the few warm things I had left in this company.

When they turned and saw me standing there, their expressions immediately changed.

"Yvette, Mr. Foster isn't that great anyway. His taste in women alone should tell you that."

"Exactly. Bad luck in love, good luck at work. Maybe you'll finally be on the promotion list this time."

Most of them had been here since the early days. They knew better than anyone how much I'd poured into this company and how little I'd gotten in return.

People hired long after me had already made supervisor or manager.

I was still only a team lead.

Caleb always told me there was no point keeping score when we were practically family, so I'd swallowed it.

It wasn't until yesterday, when I had to borrow money from a friend just to cover my mother's emergency treatment, buy an urn, and arrange a simple funeral, that I finally understood how stupid I'd been.

I gave them a faint smile.

"It's fine. I'm leaving the company anyway..."

One of my coworkers suddenly clutched her stomach.

"Oh, Yvette, my client's here. He's really into wellness stuff and always drinks dried cranberry infusion. Can you take care of him for me? I need to run to the bathroom."

I knew exactly what she was doing.

She was handing me the client so I could get the credit.

A rush of gratitude tightened my chest. I didn't want to reject her kindness, so I nodded and went into the break room.

Then I stopped in front of the glass jars.

All the labels were gone, leaving nothing behind but faint smears of adhesive.

The cleaning lady was peeling the label off another jar and barely looked up.

"Oh, that was Ms. Cole's idea. She said the labels made the office look cheap. Mr. Foster agreed, so he told us to take them all off."

I gave her an awkward smile.

"Sorry, Ms. Watson. I'm red-green color-blind, so I can't tell the raisins from the cranberries. Could you tell me which one is which?"

She looked at me in surprise, then picked up another jar and placed it in my hands.

The cold glass pressed against my palm, and somehow the chill seemed to travel straight into my heart.

I'd been severely red-green color-blind since birth.

Years ago, Caleb had once watched me fill an entire thermos with raisins because I'd mistaken them for cranberries. He'd laughed until he could barely breathe.

Then he'd gone out and bought label stickers.

After that, he carefully labeled everything at home and at the office so I would never have to guess again.

He'd kept doing it for years.

Whenever a new employee asked why everything was labeled so meticulously, I'd secretly feel a little sweetness in my chest.

Now our relationship felt no different from the faint glue marks left on those jars.

Just a sticky residue people wanted gone.

I'd barely finished making the dried cranberry infusion when raised voices suddenly erupted outside.

"Sir, ma'am, this is a private office. Who are you here to see?"

One corner of Caleb's blanket had slipped aside.Underneath, blood had soaked through a large section of the sheets. The wound on his wrist was still seeping, and from the amount of blood beneath him, it was obvious he'd cut himself some time ago.No wonder his face had been so pale, his voice barely more than a whisper. The nurse immediately called for help, and he was rushed into emergency treatment. Even after they took him away, the metallic smell of blood seemed to linger in my nose.In the end, the blood loss was too severe.Caleb died.As his only remaining family, Xavier came to handle the arrangements. When Caleb's ashes were handed to him, he turned around and dropped the urn straight into a trash can.My fingers curled slightly, but I said nothing.I simply turned and walked away. After seven years together, staying until the end was more than enough. Not long after I took my former coworkers overseas with me, I heard that Yara's condition had worsened before her case ever m

Xavier's expression changed instantly. Panic flashed across his face as he pulled me into a crushing hug."I'm sorry. I never thought Caleb would be that disgusting, that he'd treat you so heartlessly. I swear I didn't mean for any of this to happen. "I got revenge for you! Look at what happened to Caleb. And Yara too. I promise she'll spend the rest of her life behind bars. I'm already making them pay for what they did to you and your mom!"Watching him shove all the blame onto everyone but himself only made me sick.I tore myself out of his arms."You got what you wanted. Caleb's life is ruined because of you. What reason do you have to keep pretending now?"Xavier's eyes filled with tears."Yvette, I liked you first. I was the one who saw you first!"The year Caleb started college, his father came to visit him. I secretly came along. You were sitting in class by the window. You saw me outside and smiled at me."He took you from me. After that, he did everything he could to keep me

Xavier froze, then blinked at me with an innocent expression."Yvette, what are you talking about? Just because I'd take a little satisfaction in Caleb getting what was coming to him, that makes me some kind of monster?"The harmless look on his face sent a chill racing up my spine."There was something I could never figure out. Why was Yara so determined to cling to Caleb? Why was she so fixated on getting rid of me? And how did she know exactly what he liked well enough to win him over so easily?"Xavier rubbed his chin thoughtfully."Maybe it was coincidence. Or maybe she'd done her homework because she wanted to land a rich guy."I gave a humorless smile."Really? Then explain something to me. Yara grew up poor. Where did she get the nerve to scheme her way into that much of Caleb's money? And once she had all that money, why come back and provoke him? She was practically asking to get herself killed."Xavier nodded solemnly."People who suddenly come into more money than they know

The document was a transfer agreement handing the company over to Yara, complete with Caleb's signature. After what had happened with my resignation letter, I wasn't exactly surprised that Caleb had managed to sign something like this too.Yara was bold, and Caleb was an idiot.Thank God I'd gotten out when I did. Otherwise, I'd probably be the one cleaning up this disaster too.Caleb let out a furious roar and lunged for the document."It doesn't count! I signed it without knowing what it was. It's not valid!"Yara looked completely unfazed."You signed it the day we got married. I asked if you'd give me the company, and you said yes."Caleb's face flushed red."That was a joke!"Yara looked at him as though he were something she'd scraped off the bottom of her shoe."A joke? Caleb, the only reason you're in this mess is because you couldn't make up your mind about what you wanted. You brought this on yourself. If you'd just stayed with me instead of running after Yvette, I never woul

Caleb clearly hadn't expected me to agree. His head snapped up, disbelief all over his face. But I wasn't doing it for him.I was thinking about the employees who had been with the company for years. Realistically, many of them were older now. If the company collapsed, starting over somewhere else wouldn't be easy.I left Caleb to his surprise and went straight to Natalie.I asked for permission to build a team of my own and return home to recruit a group of experienced employees.Natalie trusted me completely. The moment she heard I planned to bring in people as capable as I was, she lit up and immediately submitted the proposal to headquarters.Headquarters took it seriously too. The request was approved almost at once, and I was given a month to put the team together. With everything settled, Caleb and I flew back together. At the airport, Xavier suddenly appeared. All his casts were gone. He looked completely recovered, dressed in a tailored suit and looking so polished that I almo

I was a little surprised to see that he'd changed her contact name, though I had no idea when he'd done it.Not that it mattered to me. I had no interest in asking. These days, even the sight of Yara's name seemed to irritate Caleb. His brows knitted together so tightly that anyone looking at him might have thought there was something filthy lying on the table instead of his phone. He genuinely regretted ever hiring her in the first place, much less indulging her the way he had. When he looked up at me, he gave an awkward smile and reached to decline the call."Sorry. Spam."I raised an eyebrow. "Answer it. It might be important."Caleb paused. Then he accepted the call and deliberately put it on speaker.Yara's voice came through, as eager to please as ever."Caleb, you've been overseas for more than two weeks. I miss you so much. I know I was wrong. I promise I won't upset you anymore. Can you please let me come back to the company?"Caleb glanced at me on purpose before clearing his
