Chapter 6

ผู้เขียน: Bright Lights
Caleb stared at me in disbelief.

Then he gave a cold scoff, every trace of warmth vanishing from his face.

"If you're going to lie, at least make it believable. What major company would be stupid enough to hire her? Stop playing along with this."

His arrogance immediately set everyone off, and several of my friends shot to their feet.

I grabbed their arms and told them to calm down.

Yara, meanwhile, rushed in front of Caleb as though she needed to protect him, her face full of injured innocence.

"I'm sorry. I shouldn't have asked for that shrimp. Please don't fight with Caleb because of me."

Then she turned to me.

"Yvette, you don't have to pretend you're moving overseas just to make Caleb chase after you, and you definitely don't need to gather all these people here to embarrass him. I'll leave."

She turned and ran out.

Caleb shot me a glare and immediately went after her.

"All this over one piece of shrimp? Yvette, you're getting more childish by the day. We'll settle this when I get home."

Everyone was furious.

For the rest of dinner, the conversation consisted almost entirely of how fake Yara was and how blind and arrogant Caleb had become.

By the end of the night, the knot in my chest had loosened considerably.

As we were leaving, everyone hugged me one by one and wished me a safe trip.

I went home in a cab, still carrying the warmth of their kindness with me.

When I walked into the living room, Yara was wearing my pajamas. Her hair was damp, and Caleb was standing behind her, drying it with a towel.

The second he saw me, he dropped the towel and stumbled over his explanation.

"You're back? Yara fell after she ran out earlier and got mud all over herself, so I brought her here to take a shower."

Sometimes I genuinely couldn't understand him.

He was clearly crossing every possible line with Yara, yet he still went out of his way to invent excuses for me.

Then he caught the smell of alcohol on me and frowned.

"Yara was that upset because of you, and you still went drinking?"

There had been a time when I would have given anything just to get him to talk to me a little longer.

Now the sound of his voice made me sick.

Yara tugged at his sleeve and put on a concerned expression.

"Caleb, didn't you say you were going to talk things out with Yvette? Don't start fighting with her..."

Having someone there to "calm him down" only seemed to encourage him.

"Yvette, I've already put up with you giving me the silent treatment. Now you're getting your trashy friends to gang up on Yara and trying to pressure me into marriage again? I guess birds of a feather really do flock together."

Then he dragged my mother into it.

"And your mom too. I've sent her message after message, and she hasn't replied to a single one. All because I made you two get out of the car that day? She faked being sick, and somehow she's still the victim?"

To everyone else, Caleb was the untouchable CEO who barely showed emotion.

With me, he never gave an inch.

I truly didn't want to fight with him.

Then he mentioned my mother, and everything I'd been holding back surged up at once. My eyes burned red.

"My mom wasn't faking anything. She isn't replying because she's already..."

"Wasn't faking?"

Caleb actually laughed, his face full of contempt.

"Yvette, do you think I'm three years old?

"What are the odds? She suddenly develops end-stage heart failure, says she wants to see you in a wedding dress, and pressures me into agreeing to marry you. Then one little invitation is enough to trigger another episode? What is she made of, paper?

"Could you and your mother give me some space for once? I can barely breathe around you!"

I stared at him, unable to believe what I was hearing.

Back in college, his deadbeat father had thrown him out with nothing.

My mother had worked in the cafeteria then. She was the one who secretly slipped him extra food and made sure he had hot meals, giving him some small sense of home when he had nowhere else to go.

That was how Caleb and I had met in the first place.

Back then, he'd been grateful to her.

Now there was nothing left in his eyes but disgust.

I finally lost control and argued back.

It started with him marrying Yara and spiraled into everything else I'd swallowed over the years, including the time I'd had surgery for appendicitis, and he'd claimed he was too busy working to come to the hospital, only to go out to dinner with Yara instead.

He snapped right back, accusing me of being dramatic and difficult, saying I wasn't worth so much as a single strand of Yara's hair.

At the height of the argument, he grabbed the nearest thing and hurled it across the room.

It shattered against the floor.

It was one of the matching figurines we'd flown to a famous pottery town to make for our third anniversary.

The crash snapped me back to reality.

So this was what love looked like at the end.

Nothing but wreckage scattered across the floor.

Yara, who had been watching the whole thing from a safe distance, suddenly shifted her eyes and crouched to pick up the broken pieces.

"Please stop fighting. This is all my fault. Ow..."

She sucked in a sharp breath.

Caleb's expression changed instantly. All his anger vanished as he grabbed her hand.

"Are you hurt? Let me bandage it."

Yara shook her head sweetly, then looked over at me and silently mouthed:

[You lost.]

I watched Caleb fuss over her as though she were made of glass.

Then I turned around, went to the bedroom, and started packing.

The more I packed, the more my eyes burned.

Three days ago, I'd thought I was the happiest woman in the world.

I was about to marry the man I loved, and my mother was still beside me.

Now I had nothing.

Then I pulled out the knitted beanie Caleb had given me the year before, and another sharp ache went through my chest.

For seven years, we'd struggled through so much together. We'd survived one hardship after another without ever imagining we'd let go of each other's hands.

Things were finally supposed to get better.

So when had he changed?

A mocking laugh from the doorway pulled me out of my thoughts.

Yara leaned against the frame, watching me with a smirk.

"Yvette, you really love hanging on to that little reminder that he's been cheating on you, don't you?"

One corner of Caleb's blanket had slipped aside.Underneath, blood had soaked through a large section of the sheets. The wound on his wrist was still seeping, and from the amount of blood beneath him, it was obvious he'd cut himself some time ago.No wonder his face had been so pale, his voice barely more than a whisper. The nurse immediately called for help, and he was rushed into emergency treatment. Even after they took him away, the metallic smell of blood seemed to linger in my nose.In the end, the blood loss was too severe.Caleb died.As his only remaining family, Xavier came to handle the arrangements. When Caleb's ashes were handed to him, he turned around and dropped the urn straight into a trash can.My fingers curled slightly, but I said nothing.I simply turned and walked away. After seven years together, staying until the end was more than enough. Not long after I took my former coworkers overseas with me, I heard that Yara's condition had worsened before her case ever m

Xavier's expression changed instantly. Panic flashed across his face as he pulled me into a crushing hug."I'm sorry. I never thought Caleb would be that disgusting, that he'd treat you so heartlessly. I swear I didn't mean for any of this to happen. "I got revenge for you! Look at what happened to Caleb. And Yara too. I promise she'll spend the rest of her life behind bars. I'm already making them pay for what they did to you and your mom!"Watching him shove all the blame onto everyone but himself only made me sick.I tore myself out of his arms."You got what you wanted. Caleb's life is ruined because of you. What reason do you have to keep pretending now?"Xavier's eyes filled with tears."Yvette, I liked you first. I was the one who saw you first!"The year Caleb started college, his father came to visit him. I secretly came along. You were sitting in class by the window. You saw me outside and smiled at me."He took you from me. After that, he did everything he could to keep me

Xavier froze, then blinked at me with an innocent expression."Yvette, what are you talking about? Just because I'd take a little satisfaction in Caleb getting what was coming to him, that makes me some kind of monster?"The harmless look on his face sent a chill racing up my spine."There was something I could never figure out. Why was Yara so determined to cling to Caleb? Why was she so fixated on getting rid of me? And how did she know exactly what he liked well enough to win him over so easily?"Xavier rubbed his chin thoughtfully."Maybe it was coincidence. Or maybe she'd done her homework because she wanted to land a rich guy."I gave a humorless smile."Really? Then explain something to me. Yara grew up poor. Where did she get the nerve to scheme her way into that much of Caleb's money? And once she had all that money, why come back and provoke him? She was practically asking to get herself killed."Xavier nodded solemnly."People who suddenly come into more money than they know

The document was a transfer agreement handing the company over to Yara, complete with Caleb's signature. After what had happened with my resignation letter, I wasn't exactly surprised that Caleb had managed to sign something like this too.Yara was bold, and Caleb was an idiot.Thank God I'd gotten out when I did. Otherwise, I'd probably be the one cleaning up this disaster too.Caleb let out a furious roar and lunged for the document."It doesn't count! I signed it without knowing what it was. It's not valid!"Yara looked completely unfazed."You signed it the day we got married. I asked if you'd give me the company, and you said yes."Caleb's face flushed red."That was a joke!"Yara looked at him as though he were something she'd scraped off the bottom of her shoe."A joke? Caleb, the only reason you're in this mess is because you couldn't make up your mind about what you wanted. You brought this on yourself. If you'd just stayed with me instead of running after Yvette, I never woul

Caleb clearly hadn't expected me to agree. His head snapped up, disbelief all over his face. But I wasn't doing it for him.I was thinking about the employees who had been with the company for years. Realistically, many of them were older now. If the company collapsed, starting over somewhere else wouldn't be easy.I left Caleb to his surprise and went straight to Natalie.I asked for permission to build a team of my own and return home to recruit a group of experienced employees.Natalie trusted me completely. The moment she heard I planned to bring in people as capable as I was, she lit up and immediately submitted the proposal to headquarters.Headquarters took it seriously too. The request was approved almost at once, and I was given a month to put the team together. With everything settled, Caleb and I flew back together. At the airport, Xavier suddenly appeared. All his casts were gone. He looked completely recovered, dressed in a tailored suit and looking so polished that I almo

I was a little surprised to see that he'd changed her contact name, though I had no idea when he'd done it.Not that it mattered to me. I had no interest in asking. These days, even the sight of Yara's name seemed to irritate Caleb. His brows knitted together so tightly that anyone looking at him might have thought there was something filthy lying on the table instead of his phone. He genuinely regretted ever hiring her in the first place, much less indulging her the way he had. When he looked up at me, he gave an awkward smile and reached to decline the call."Sorry. Spam."I raised an eyebrow. "Answer it. It might be important."Caleb paused. Then he accepted the call and deliberately put it on speaker.Yara's voice came through, as eager to please as ever."Caleb, you've been overseas for more than two weeks. I miss you so much. I know I was wrong. I promise I won't upset you anymore. Can you please let me come back to the company?"Caleb glanced at me on purpose before clearing his
