Chapter 7

作者: Bright Lights
I followed her gaze.

The moment I looked down at the knitted beanie in my hands, my fingers clenched around it.

It felt like I'd been struck by lightning.

Caleb had given me the hat on Christmas Day the year before. He'd said Yara had helped him pick it out and told me not to give her a hard time over it.

Because of my red-green color blindness, I'd always thought it was Christmas red. Festive. Perfect for the holidays.

It was the first gift Caleb had ever given me, and I'd been so happy that I'd worn it all winter.

A few coworkers had tactfully told me the color was "a little unusual," but I'd never thought much of it.

Now I understood.

It was an ugly, glaring green.

And Yara had known exactly what she was doing.

Heat rushed to my head.

I gripped the beanie in my fist and stormed back out to confront Caleb, who was putting away the first-aid kit.

He'd still been wearing a cold expression, but the second he saw what I was holding, a flicker of unease crossed his face.

My voice came out hoarse.

"Caleb. What color is this?"

His lips pressed together.

I knew that habit.

It was what he did when he felt guilty.

Then he answered as though I were the unreasonable one.

"Yvette, don't start digging up old grievances. It's spring green. Green symbolizes new beginnings. That's all it means. It's just a color. It's fashion."

I suddenly laughed.

And then, without warning, tears slipped from the corners of my eyes.

God, I'd been stupid.

So unbelievably stupid.

"Caleb, if the hat has such a beautiful meaning, why didn't you buy one for Yara too?"

Yara covered her mouth in exaggerated surprise.

"Oh, Caleb, I'm sorry. I had no idea Yvette didn't even know what color it was. If it's that big a deal, I can wear it instead. I don't care if people laugh at me..."

Caleb's face darkened.

He snatched the beanie out of my hand and threw it straight into the trash.

"Enough. It's a hat. Why are we fighting over a damn hat? If you don't like it, throw it away and buy another one. It's not like we can't afford one!"

He wanted to brush the whole thing aside and move on.

But all the strength had drained out of me.

I grabbed the suitcase I'd just packed and headed for the door.

Caleb stared at me, stunned, then furious.

"So that's what you were doing in the bedroom? Packing your bags so you could storm out?"

He grabbed the suitcase handle and refused to let go.

"You can't even read traffic lights properly. Aren't you afraid you'll get hit by a car out there? You don't have a driver's license, and it's the middle of the night. You won't even be able to get a cab. Where exactly do you think you're going?

"And don't forget last month. You couldn't get a ride in that storm, and I was the one who drove you to meet your client."

His grip tightened.

"You're the one who's always depended on me. I don't need you. If you think you can make it on your own, then go. Let's see who gives a damn if you end up dead somewhere."

I looked at the contempt and arrogance written all over his face, and pain twisted through my chest.

Not because of him.

Because of how little I'd valued myself.

There had been a time when Caleb promised to be my eyes. He'd hold my hand when we crossed the street and drive me to and from work, insisting he was happy to do it.

When had that man disappeared?

Somewhere along the way, whenever I asked him whether fruit was ripe or spoiled because I couldn't tell by the color, he stopped helping. He'd just sneer that if I couldn't tell, I shouldn't buy it.

When we crossed the street, he'd get annoyed at me for checking both directions too many times. Once, he even shoved me forward and nearly sent me straight into traffic.

Then there was last month's storm.

I'd gone home to pick up a flash drive for him and couldn't get a cab back to the office. When I called and asked him to come get me, he accused me of always creating problems and told me to walk.

By the time I made it back, the wind had turned my umbrella inside out, and I was soaked from head to toe.

Caleb hadn't shown an ounce of concern.

Instead, he'd exploded at me.

"Yvette, I told you to get the flash drive, not go home and wash your hair! At this rate, I might as well let Yara handle the client meeting."

One of my coworkers had finally taken pity on me.

"Mr. Foster... Yvette walked here in the rain."

Only then had he tossed me a dry towel.

I'd been halfway through wiping my face when Yara casually mentioned that it was the rag she used to clean her shoes.

For a moment, I hadn't known whether to drop it or keep holding it.

My whole body had trembled.

I still didn't know whether it had been from the cold or from what he'd done to me.

That was the thing about someone who no longer cared about you.

You could be hanging by your neck, and they'd think you were playing on a swing. You could come in drenched from a storm, and they'd assume you'd just washed your hair.

If my mother hadn't become seriously ill afterward and begged to see me married, I might have ended things then.

And now Caleb was actually using that night as proof of everything he'd supposedly done for me.

He swallowed.

"Why are you staring at me like that?"

I smiled faintly.

"Thank you for finally telling me the truth, Caleb. All this time, you've seen me as a useless freeloader who can't survive without you."

I met his eyes.

"Don't worry. I won't humiliate myself by depending on you ever again."

Whatever love I'd had left for him was gone.

Completely.

I pried his fingers off the suitcase handle one by one, picked up my luggage, and walked out.

One corner of Caleb's blanket had slipped aside.Underneath, blood had soaked through a large section of the sheets. The wound on his wrist was still seeping, and from the amount of blood beneath him, it was obvious he'd cut himself some time ago.No wonder his face had been so pale, his voice barely more than a whisper. The nurse immediately called for help, and he was rushed into emergency treatment. Even after they took him away, the metallic smell of blood seemed to linger in my nose.In the end, the blood loss was too severe.Caleb died.As his only remaining family, Xavier came to handle the arrangements. When Caleb's ashes were handed to him, he turned around and dropped the urn straight into a trash can.My fingers curled slightly, but I said nothing.I simply turned and walked away. After seven years together, staying until the end was more than enough. Not long after I took my former coworkers overseas with me, I heard that Yara's condition had worsened before her case ever m

Xavier's expression changed instantly. Panic flashed across his face as he pulled me into a crushing hug."I'm sorry. I never thought Caleb would be that disgusting, that he'd treat you so heartlessly. I swear I didn't mean for any of this to happen. "I got revenge for you! Look at what happened to Caleb. And Yara too. I promise she'll spend the rest of her life behind bars. I'm already making them pay for what they did to you and your mom!"Watching him shove all the blame onto everyone but himself only made me sick.I tore myself out of his arms."You got what you wanted. Caleb's life is ruined because of you. What reason do you have to keep pretending now?"Xavier's eyes filled with tears."Yvette, I liked you first. I was the one who saw you first!"The year Caleb started college, his father came to visit him. I secretly came along. You were sitting in class by the window. You saw me outside and smiled at me."He took you from me. After that, he did everything he could to keep me

Xavier froze, then blinked at me with an innocent expression."Yvette, what are you talking about? Just because I'd take a little satisfaction in Caleb getting what was coming to him, that makes me some kind of monster?"The harmless look on his face sent a chill racing up my spine."There was something I could never figure out. Why was Yara so determined to cling to Caleb? Why was she so fixated on getting rid of me? And how did she know exactly what he liked well enough to win him over so easily?"Xavier rubbed his chin thoughtfully."Maybe it was coincidence. Or maybe she'd done her homework because she wanted to land a rich guy."I gave a humorless smile."Really? Then explain something to me. Yara grew up poor. Where did she get the nerve to scheme her way into that much of Caleb's money? And once she had all that money, why come back and provoke him? She was practically asking to get herself killed."Xavier nodded solemnly."People who suddenly come into more money than they know

The document was a transfer agreement handing the company over to Yara, complete with Caleb's signature. After what had happened with my resignation letter, I wasn't exactly surprised that Caleb had managed to sign something like this too.Yara was bold, and Caleb was an idiot.Thank God I'd gotten out when I did. Otherwise, I'd probably be the one cleaning up this disaster too.Caleb let out a furious roar and lunged for the document."It doesn't count! I signed it without knowing what it was. It's not valid!"Yara looked completely unfazed."You signed it the day we got married. I asked if you'd give me the company, and you said yes."Caleb's face flushed red."That was a joke!"Yara looked at him as though he were something she'd scraped off the bottom of her shoe."A joke? Caleb, the only reason you're in this mess is because you couldn't make up your mind about what you wanted. You brought this on yourself. If you'd just stayed with me instead of running after Yvette, I never woul

Caleb clearly hadn't expected me to agree. His head snapped up, disbelief all over his face. But I wasn't doing it for him.I was thinking about the employees who had been with the company for years. Realistically, many of them were older now. If the company collapsed, starting over somewhere else wouldn't be easy.I left Caleb to his surprise and went straight to Natalie.I asked for permission to build a team of my own and return home to recruit a group of experienced employees.Natalie trusted me completely. The moment she heard I planned to bring in people as capable as I was, she lit up and immediately submitted the proposal to headquarters.Headquarters took it seriously too. The request was approved almost at once, and I was given a month to put the team together. With everything settled, Caleb and I flew back together. At the airport, Xavier suddenly appeared. All his casts were gone. He looked completely recovered, dressed in a tailored suit and looking so polished that I almo

I was a little surprised to see that he'd changed her contact name, though I had no idea when he'd done it.Not that it mattered to me. I had no interest in asking. These days, even the sight of Yara's name seemed to irritate Caleb. His brows knitted together so tightly that anyone looking at him might have thought there was something filthy lying on the table instead of his phone. He genuinely regretted ever hiring her in the first place, much less indulging her the way he had. When he looked up at me, he gave an awkward smile and reached to decline the call."Sorry. Spam."I raised an eyebrow. "Answer it. It might be important."Caleb paused. Then he accepted the call and deliberately put it on speaker.Yara's voice came through, as eager to please as ever."Caleb, you've been overseas for more than two weeks. I miss you so much. I know I was wrong. I promise I won't upset you anymore. Can you please let me come back to the company?"Caleb glanced at me on purpose before clearing his
