Chapter 3

Author: AlphaGo
The phone screen had a thin crack.

I had to swipe twice before the post opened.

Chloe had posted my paper on the academy forum with the caption:

Didn't give up research even in the hospital. Finally finished.

The advisor asked below why she'd abandoned the original formula in the third set of experiments.

She answered: It didn't work well.

The advisor asked again: if it didn't work well, why was the final data still from that set?

She didn't answer.

Further down, the advisor uploaded the revision history.

Every version had a date. Every version had my name on it.

The comments had already exploded into hundreds.

Some demanded the academy strip Chloe of her outstanding student title. Others asked how much of the work she'd submitted over the years was actually her own.

"She's fainted twice."

Damian took the phone from my hand.

"Why did your advisor have to post this now? She's testing medicine tomorrow!"

"So what?"

"Go explain it clearly."

My father frowned.

"Your sister is sick. Where would she get the energy to deal with this? You're healthy. What's wrong with taking a little hardship?"

I looked at Damian's hand holding Chloe's.

Five years ago, I was thrown out of the house and waited all night in the rain.

When Damian found me, the first thing he did was take off his coat and wrap it around me.

He said that as long as he was there, no one would ever throw me out again.

But later, he gradually leaned toward Chloe too.

Our dinners had an extra set of cutlery. Our anniversary trips had an extra plane ticket.

I asked him why.

He said, "She's just your sister. Can't you even tolerate her?"

Now he stood in front of my sister, waiting for me to admit I was wrong.

"Fine. I'll explain."

My mother immediately took the tissue away from the corner of her eye.

"Say you read your sister's draft first. Don't let people misunderstand."

Chloe added quietly.

"But the advisor already posted the revision history..."

The room went quiet.

I took the phone.

"Then I'll say I used your ideas."

Damian's brow relaxed.

"Calm this down first. We'll deal with the rest later."

Chloe turned on the recording. The camera pointed at me.

I looked down at my pajamas.

The collar had been pulled crooked earlier.

I buttoned it properly.

"Ready."

In the video, I admitted I'd read Chloe's draft. I admitted the research direction came from her. I admitted the version the advisor saw couldn't prove she plagiarized.

Halfway through, Chloe said my voice was too quiet and made me start over.

I said it again.

Before uploading, my mother checked the wording and changed "we discussed it together" to "she shared it with me."

"That makes it clearer."

After the video went up, my advisor called.

I declined it.

He sent a message.

[Think carefully. This statement will destroy your graduation qualifications.]

I stared at it for a long time and replied.

[Professor, I'm sorry.]

Damian reached over and straightened my collar.

"Don't be afraid. After the trial, I'll handle it."

His fingers brushed the back of my neck.

"Next full moon, I'll make up the marking ceremony for you. That lake you like, I've already had people look at the venue."

In the past, I would have chased him for a date.

This time I just said, "Okay."

My mother showed her phone to my father.

"See? Someone's already speaking up for Chloe."

My sister moved closer to me. Under the pretense of wiping her tears, she leaned in and whispered.

"The paper is mine. Mom and Dad are mine."

She glanced at Damian.

"Even he chose me."

I pulled the corner of my clothes out of her hand.

"Yeah. You win."

She looked up, as if still searching for something in my face.

My mother had already pulled her back into her arms.

Damian lowered his head to delete the insulting comments for her.

My phone rang again.

This time, Damian silenced it for me.

Chloe didn't come to the funeral. She was temporarily restricted from leaving the pack, awaiting the council's ruling on falsely claiming the sacrifice, misappropriating research results, and making false statements about her illness.Damian's Alpha authority was also suspended. His order to bypass the screening was filed in the same case file as my death record. They could no longer use the phrase "family matter" to get someone to put the documents away.A small patch of earth had been turned over in the academy's medicinal garden. My mother brought many things. The ribbon she used to tie my hair when I was little. An old stuffed animal. And food she had made herself. She asked Evan if they could be placed inside.Evan opened the paper bag and glanced at it.Inside were pumpkin pies."Eve doesn't eat these."My mother froze."She loved them when she was little.""She breaks out in a rash when she eats pumpkin."Evan handed the bag back to her."At academy gatherings, she always took a

They brought me home. The luggage by the door still hadn't been cleared away. One wheel of the suitcase was broken. When the maid lifted it, my mother suddenly reached out and hugged it."The day she came back, why didn't anyone carry it in for her?"The maid lowered her head."You said to leave it there for now."My mother held the suitcase and didn't let go for a long time.My bedroom was already mostly empty.By the bed, only a small patch of adhesive remained where the photo had been.Damian stood there, scraping at it with his nail for a long time.My father was in the living room looking for his scarf. The maid said it had been thrown out with the other things. They asked when the garbage would be collected. It had already been taken away.My mother opened the jewelry box, looking for the brooch.Inside were gifts Chloe had given her over the years. Each one had its own little compartment. She searched through it twice before remembering that my brooch had never been put in there

Chloe quickly changed her story."I was so scared then.""Dad was dying, and Sis was gone. I just wanted to make Mom feel better."She knelt in front of my mother and tried to take her hand."Later everyone said it was me. I didn't know how to explain."My mother pulled her hand back.Chloe fell to the floor, crying harder."But I really am sick. The decay isn't fake!"Martha took her medical record. Her wolf spirit was indeed damaged. But not from the sacrifice. For years, to score high in the academy's power assessments, she had repeatedly used enhancement potions.Every time the effects wore off, someone else had to clean up the mess.My experiments. Damian's authority. My father's connections. This time was no different.Martha closed the record."Conventional treatment could have controlled it. There was no need to skip the screening and make another person test a new drug immediately."Damian looked at her."You said waiting any longer would kill her.""I was scared!"Chloe looke

When the sealed records arrived, my advisor came too.His name was Evan. He had taught me at the academy for six years. He was holding a withdrawal application. The first thing he said when he walked in was, "Eve, I haven't signed it."No one answered. He saw me and stopped at the foot of the bed. After a moment, he folded the application and put it in his pocket."I should have come to find you myself."My mother, holding my hand, looked up at him for confirmation."She had friends at the academy, right?""Someone knew she was sick, didn't they?"Evan didn't answer. He took an envelope from his folder."She mailed this to me last night."Damian reached for it.Evan avoided him."It's addressed to me."There were only a few lines in the letter.Professor, I'm sorry. What I said in the video wasn't true. The original research materials are in the academy's experiment archive. The submission number is attached. If I can't come back, please continue the research. The formula can help thos

Damian snatched the agreement."This doesn't count."He crumpled the paper, then, as if afraid of damaging something, hurried to smooth it out again."I just wanted her to listen.""She wouldn't have signed before."The nurse held the pen out to my father. He didn't take it.He kept staring at my chest. There was no breathing there, only the cut-open pajamas. My mother reached to straighten my collar. The buttons had been cut off. No matter how she tried, she couldn't close it.From the preparation room came Chloe's voice."Mom, I'm scared."My mother turned instinctively.I looked too.My sister stood by the door wrapped in a blanket, tears already falling."Is it because of me that Sis..."She didn't finish.Usually, when she got to this point, my father would go over and hold her. This time, he only asked the witch, "Why didn't you find out beforehand that she had no wolf spirit?"The witch produced the trial file. The first page read: A wolf-spirit strength screening must be comple

I didn't disappear right away.My body stayed on the bed, but I was standing beside it.The witch pressed two fingers to the side of my neck, then yanked the blanket back."Stop the injection. Get the head healer!"The nurse rushed out and knocked open the door to the preparation room.My mother stood up first."What's wrong? Is Chloe uncomfortable?""It's the test subject."She let out a breath."Then keep your voices down. Don't scare her sister."The witch didn't answer. She cut open my collar and pressed the healing stone to my chest. The stone lit up once, then quickly went dark.Through the open door, I saw Damian put the necklace back in its box."What's wrong with her now?""Her heart stopped."The jewelry box hit the floor. My mother was still holding Chloe's shoulder, as if she hadn't understood."Whose heart stopped?"The nurse was already inserting a needle into my arm for the second time.No one answered her.Damian rushed in, blocking the light from the doorway."Eve."He
