Chapter 4

Author: AlphaGo
Two hours until the trial.

I sat alone on the bench outside the treatment room.

Damian came out.

"Why are you sitting here? Go in and keep Chloe company."

The hospital bed was already covered in gifts.

My father had brought her favorite flowers. My mother was holding a thermal container.

Chloe pointed at the box. "Can't I eat now?"

"After the trial."

My mother touched her face.

"I'll make whatever you want. Even that one you loved when you were little."

Damian took a jewelry box from his pocket.

A moonstone necklace.

I'd looked at it once in a shop window and asked him if it was pretty.

He'd said the stone was too cold and uncomfortable to wear.

Now he put the necklace in Chloe's hand.

"When you're better, I'll put it on you myself."

My sister smiled. "Then you're not allowed to forget."

"I won't."

I looked down at my wrist.

The hospital bracelet was too loose and had slipped to the base of my palm.

The nurse tightened it and asked where my family was.

"All here."

She followed my gaze. Her lips moved, but she didn't ask again.

My father was discussing with Damian whether the family should stay by the sea for a while after Chloe recovered.

My mother said I should get out more too, instead of staying cooped up in the house all day.

They even started arguing about which hotel's food suited Chloe's taste better.

I waited until they finished before I spoke.

"If I die during the trial, would you be sad?"

The smile vanished from my mother's face.

"You know your sister's scared, and you still say things like that!"

My father moved the thermal container a little farther away.

"Your wolf has always been strong. What nonsense are you talking about?"

Damian walked over and squeezed my shoulder.

"We've hired the best healing witches. Nothing will happen."

His hand let go quickly.

"When you come out, buy whatever you like."

I looked at the jewelry box that had already been opened.

"Okay."

When the nurse called my name, Chloe grabbed my father's hand and cried that she was scared.

My father bent down and pressed his forehead to hers.

"Don't be afraid. We'll be right outside the door. We won't go anywhere."

My mother followed the gurney.

Damian passed me and handed the signing board to the nurse.

"Her trial paperwork is all done. Take her in first."

I lay down on another gurney.

No one asked if I was cold.

Before the door closed, I looked at them one last time.

My mother was taking off Chloe's earrings. My father was supporting her head. Damian was holding the moonstone necklace, carefully winding the chain around his fingers so it wouldn't tangle.

"Family, wait outside."

The healing witch urged.

I was wheeled into the inner trial room. Chloe stayed in the preparation room next door.

As I was pushed in, I heard my mother's voice.

"When you're better, we'll go to the beach."

I clutched the bedsheet and waited for the witch to push the medicine into the back of my hand.

She asked if I was nervous.

"A little."

"Think about when you wake up."

But I would never wake up again.

The moment the specially made injection entered my vein, I felt the last bit of warmth in my chest disappear.

I opened my mouth, wanting to call for my mother.

Outside the door, Chloe was calling too.

My mother answered her immediately.

My fingers released the bedsheet.

In the last moment before I died, Damian was still outside asking how to open the necklace clasp.

My mother said, "Don't break it. Chloe will wear it when she wakes up."

In the last moment before my heart stopped, only one blurry thought remained in my mind.

If they knew that five years ago, the one who sacrificed her wolf spirit for my father was actually me. If they knew I would die from the trial. Would they regret it?

Too bad I wouldn't be around to see it.

As the wolfbane completely invaded my body, my heart stopped beating.

Chloe didn't come to the funeral. She was temporarily restricted from leaving the pack, awaiting the council's ruling on falsely claiming the sacrifice, misappropriating research results, and making false statements about her illness.Damian's Alpha authority was also suspended. His order to bypass the screening was filed in the same case file as my death record. They could no longer use the phrase "family matter" to get someone to put the documents away.A small patch of earth had been turned over in the academy's medicinal garden. My mother brought many things. The ribbon she used to tie my hair when I was little. And food she had made herself. She asked Evan if they could be placed inside.Evan opened the paper bag and glanced at it.Inside were pumpkin pies."Eve doesn't eat these."My mother froze."She loved them when she was little.""She breaks out in a rash when she eats pumpkin."Evan handed the bag back to her."At academy gatherings, she always took a

They brought me home. The luggage by the door still hadn't been cleared away. One wheel of the suitcase was broken. When the maid lifted it, my mother suddenly reached out and hugged it."The day she came back, why didn't anyone carry it in for her?"The maid lowered her head."You said to leave it there for now."My mother held the suitcase and didn't let go for a long time.My bedroom was already mostly empty.By the bed, only a small patch of adhesive remained where the photo had been.Damian stood there, scraping at it with his nail for a long time.My father was in the living room looking for his scarf. The maid said it had been thrown out with the other things. They asked when the garbage would be collected. It had already been taken away.My mother opened the jewelry box, looking for the brooch.Inside were gifts Chloe had given her over the years. Each one had its own little compartment. She searched through it twice before remembering that my brooch had never been put in there

Chloe quickly changed her story."I was so scared then.""Dad was dying, and Sis was gone. I just wanted to make Mom feel better."She knelt in front of my mother and tried to take her hand."Later everyone said it was me. I didn't know how to explain."My mother pulled her hand back.Chloe fell to the floor, crying harder."But I really am sick. The decay isn't fake!"Martha took her medical record. Her wolf spirit was indeed damaged. But not from the sacrifice. For years, to score high in the academy's power assessments, she had repeatedly used enhancement potions.Every time the effects wore off, someone else had to clean up the mess.My experiments. Damian's authority. My father's connections. This time was no different.Martha closed the record."Conventional treatment could have controlled it. There was no need to skip the screening and make another person test a new drug immediately."Damian looked at her."You said waiting any longer would kill her.""I was scared!"Chloe looke

When the sealed records arrived, my advisor came too.His name was Evan. He had taught me at the academy for six years. He was holding a withdrawal application. The first thing he said when he walked in was, "Eve, I haven't signed it."No one answered. He saw me and stopped at the foot of the bed. After a moment, he folded the application and put it in his pocket."I should have come to find you myself."My mother, holding my hand, looked up at him for confirmation."She had friends at the academy, right?""Someone knew she was sick, didn't they?"Evan didn't answer. He took an envelope from his folder."She mailed this to me last night."Damian reached for it.Evan avoided him."It's addressed to me."There were only a few lines in the letter.Professor, I'm sorry. What I said in the video wasn't true. The original research materials are in the academy's experiment archive. Damian snatched the agreement."This doesn't count."He crumpled the paper, then, as if afraid of damaging something, hurried to smooth it out again."I just wanted her to listen.""She wouldn't have signed before."The nurse held the pen out to my father. He didn't take it.He kept staring at my chest. There was no breathing there, only the cut-open pajamas. My mother reached to straighten my collar. The buttons had been cut off. No matter how she tried, she couldn't close it.From the preparation room came Chloe's voice."Mom, I'm scared."My mother turned instinctively.I looked too.My sister stood by the door wrapped in a blanket, tears already falling."Is it because of me that Sis..."She didn't finish.Usually, when she got to this point, my father would go over and hold her. This time, he only asked the witch, "Why didn't you find out beforehand that she had no wolf spirit?"The witch produced the trial file. The first page read: A wolf-spirit strength screening must be comple

I didn't disappear right away.My body stayed on the bed, but I was standing beside it.The witch pressed two fingers to the side of my neck, then yanked the blanket back."Stop the injection. Get the head healer!"The nurse rushed out and knocked open the door to the preparation room.My mother stood up first."What's wrong? Is Chloe uncomfortable?""It's the test subject."She let out a breath."Then keep your voices down. Don't scare her sister."The witch didn't answer. She cut open my collar and pressed the healing stone to my chest. The stone lit up once, then quickly went dark.Through the open door, I saw Damian put the necklace back in its box."What's wrong with her now?""Her heart stopped."The jewelry box hit the floor. My mother was still holding Chloe's shoulder, as if she hadn't understood."Whose heart stopped?"The nurse was already inserting a needle into my arm for the second time.No one answered her.Damian rushed in, blocking the light from the doorway."Eve."He
