Chapter 1

Author: Quick Creating
Before my mother died, she left me four prophecies, written in runes beneath my skin.

The runes would glow beneath the full moon.

The first warned me not to join the Hunters’ Council.

So I became a Federation enforcer instead. I earned the highest military honors in two territorial wars. The Council headquarters, where I would have served, was later razed by rival wolves armed with silverfire shells.

The second forbade me from staying in North America.

I moved to the wolf territories in Europe and personally dismantled five black-market rings trafficking in wolf-blood hybrids. Later, a rival family attacked my old home in North America.

Only the third prophecy went unheeded.

She told me not to marry Lucian.

The day I found out I was pregnant, I finally understood why.

We were in the Northern Pack’s council chamber. Lucian listened to my news, then said casually, “Get rid of it. Vivienne and I already have a daughter.”

I stood before the obsidian conference table, gripping the test results. For a moment, I couldn’t speak.

“What did you say? Is this some kind of joke?”

He handed me a stack of photographs.

In them, he held a baby girl against his chest. The look on his face as he gazed down at her was tender.

“Remember when Vivienne asked you for a year off?”

He lit a cigar without a trace of concern.

“Maternity leave.”

I flung the test results in his face.

The paper grazed his cheek and fluttered to the floor.

“She’s my apprentice! You’ve been screwing someone I trained!”

Lucian’s eyes narrowed slightly.

“Is that a problem?”

“When did it start?”

My voice was tight.

“The night we bonded. A coincidence, really. I’d been drinking. I mistook her for you. There’s something about an omega’s blood that makes a man lose control. After that, I couldn’t get enough.”

Lucian picked up the contract on the table. There was even a gentle smile on his lips.

“End the pregnancy. I promised Vivienne no other woman would bear my children.”

“Lucian!”

I drove my fist toward his face.

He caught my wrist. Two exchanges later, he had both my arms twisted behind my back and my body slammed facedown against the obsidian table.

“I’ve been good to you these past five years. Don’t push it!”

He released me and turned toward the door.

“Let me know when it’s done.”

I spun, aiming a kick at his back.

As if he’d expected it, Lucian turned and seized my ankle. He twisted hard.

I lost my balance and hit the floor. My temple struck the corner of the table. Blood ran into my left eye, staining my vision red.

“Careful. You might lose it right here.”

He wiped his hands and slammed the door behind him.

Only then did I understand why my mother had warned me against marrying an Alpha of my own kind.

He had been my partner for five years. We had fought side by side. He had shielded me from countless silver bullets and hunters’ traps.

None of it had stopped him from betraying me.

His fingers curled tight.“That day, I swore I’d never let you down. I failed. I know. I wronged you. But I still wanted to protect you. That’s why I told you not to sever the mate bond.”I slapped him across the face.“You bastard!”He didn’t move away. Instead, he gently caught my hand.“I was a bastard. Now I regret it. I’ll spend the rest of my life keeping the promise I made then. I won’t fail you again.”I tore my hand free and stepped back.“You don’t deserve the chance.”I shoved him aside and stumbled toward the door.“Nova!”I didn’t look back. I closed the door behind me.I hadn’t realized my phone had fallen on the study floor.Lucian stood for a moment, then bent to pick it up.The screen was still on, open to my messages with Kasper. He glanced at the door and moved his fingers across the screen, sending the message.“Kasper, I’m not coming back. I want to stay with him forever. I’m sorry. I’ve changed my mind. I’ll have to repay what I owe you in another life.”In the me

In the study, Lucian finally told me about his past.He had known me far longer than I had realized. He was the family’s unacknowledged bastard. No one treated him as a person. Even the guards could kick him as they passed.Only a stray wolf pup would play with him.One rainy night, when he was five, he took some dried meat to feed it.His older brothers and sisters were waiting for him. They made him look at the freshly stripped pelt. From that day on, they taught him over and over that he deserved nothing of his own.Lucian raised his head, his eyes red at the corners.“They said I was a mistake. A thing. An animal. I wasn’t fit to sit at their table. To survive, I learned to read people. I could always find a few words that told them exactly what they wanted to hear.”He rose and went to the window, his back rigid.“As I grew older, my looks helped. Even women who used to look down on me began to let their guard down. I charmed people, bought their loyalty. I fooled even my father.

But just before their lips touched, he stopped.Cecilia’s expression shifted. She caught his face in her hands and leaned in herself.“No!”Kasper shoved her away.“Guards! Get Cecilia out of here!”The door flew open, and two guards rushed in.He stumbled into the bathroom, turned on the shower, and stood beneath the cold water. The drug still raged through him. Bracing himself against the wall, he bit his tongue until blood trickled from the corner of his mouth.Water streamed down his face. Gradually, his breathing steadied.By morning, his head was clear. The first thing he did was cut all ties with Cecilia. In the hall, she gave a desolate laugh.“You think I care about being your sister? Let me tell you something, Kasper. I haven’t thought of you as my brother since I turned eighteen!”“Shut up!”“We’ve had more than twenty years together, and you fall for a woman you’ve known for five? Your enemy? What’s wrong with me?”Kasper’s face hardened.“She’s out of her mind. Send her aw

Lucian stood next to me, looking down at it.“I’m sorry. I wanted so badly to have someone who was entirely mine. That’s what she was.”My voice was cold.“Wasn’t I your wife?”He said nothing.I turned toward him.“At our bonding ceremony, we swore we would belong only to each other. Forever.”He lowered his head.“I’m sorry. You’ve read my file, haven’t you? I always thought men of my bloodline were entitled to more than one woman.”I gave a harsh laugh.“As long as there was only one woman I loved, the others were just diversions. I thought that was enough. But I was wrong. By the time I realized it, it was too late…”The wind lifted ash from the ruins. He looked at me.“So the only thing left for me to do is make amends. I’ll do anything it takes.”I didn’t understand what he meant then.Only later did I learn that he had been intercepting my communications with the outside world the whole time.Every reply Kasper received from me had been written by Lucian. Each one colder than th

Kasper frowned.“Did he force you?”I didn’t answer.“If this isn’t what you want, he can’t make you do anything. Not while I’m here.”“I need to know the truth about those four prophecies.”I looked up at him.“Leaving you is his only condition.”“We can find another way.”“I can’t wait!”He went still. My eyes stung. I fought to keep the tears from falling.“I need to know what happened to my mother.”Kasper looked down at the ring I had placed on his desk. After a moment, he rose, walked over, and took my hand.“If you’ve made your decision, I understand.”My eyes burned harder.I pulled my hand away.“I’m sorry.”I turned toward the door without looking back.“Just put another favor on my tab. Once I have my answers, I’ll come back.”“Can you promise me that?”I had already left the room.Kasper stood where he was, looking at the empty doorway. The light slowly faded from his eyes.Lucian and I were back where we had started. In the Northern Pack’s council chamber, he bent his head

I tried to pull away. His grip only tightened.“Nova, sever your bond with him and come back to me. Everything I have will be yours. Me. My wealth. My power. My secrets.”“Let go of me, Lucian!”“Nova.”He looked down at me with such tenderness, as if I were the only person he could see.“Leave him. Please. I’ll never hurt you again…”At the same time, Kasper sat in his study, territorial documents spread over his desk.Every word spoken in the medical suite came through the phone beside him.His fingers tightened, creasing the edge of a document. One of his men asked quietly, “Shall we throw him out now, sir?”“Why? He still has answers Nova wants.”“But Lucian means it. He’s determined to take her away.”“So?”“You’re… not worried she’ll go?”Kasper smiled and set down the paper.“Plenty of men want Nova. I’m the only one who deserves her.”After a moment’s hesitation, the man asked, “But didn’t you hate her at first, sir?”Kasper paused and looked toward the window.“Yes. Then that
