Chapter 5

Author: Sweetie Moore
Zoey suddenly stumbled back two steps and screamed, "Ah! Shawn, why don't you just die?

"You'd really do something this cruel just to fight me for custody of Leo?"

Peter quickly caught her, then turned on me.

"Shawn, you've gone too far. You scared Zoey.

"I saw Leo myself. He was perfectly fine. Why would you—"

I tightened my grip on the urn and glared at him.

"Shut up!

"You don't get to lie about a dead kid. You'll pay for this."

My words hit a nerve.

Zoey exploded. "Shawn, you've really lost it. Cursing your own son wasn't enough, so now you're cursing Peter too?

"With a father like you, no wonder Leo picked up such awful behavior."

A bad feeling hit me, but before I could react, Zoey rolled up her sleeves.

"Peter, hold Shawn down!"

Peter smirked and grabbed me, pinning me in place.

Zoey walked over and ripped the urn from my hands.

"What are you doing?!"

I stared at her in horror. No matter how hard I fought, I couldn't break free.

"Fine. You want to call these ashes?

"If you're so determined to keep this act going, I'll dump your precious ashes all over the floor!"

Zoey smiled smugly, raised our son's urn—

and smashed it to the floor.

"NO!"

I screamed, but it was too late.

Too late.

The urn hit the floor and shattered, scattering Leo's ashes everywhere.

I ripped free from Peter and stumbled forward, collapsing beside them.

My eyes burned as tears poured down my face.

I glared at Zoey and Peter.

"Zoey! Peter! You'll both pay for this! You'll both go to hell!"

Zoey stared at me, stunned by my reaction.

I'd always kept my emotions in check. I almost never lost it in front of her.

She took a step back, her voice softer. "Why are you crying? It's just a box of flour."

I wiped my face with the back of my hand and realized I was sobbing.

When I said nothing, Zoey pouted and waved me off.

"Fine, Shawn. Stop acting.

"Leo can stay with you for a couple of days. I'll pick him up later."

To her, that was already a compromise.

I ignored her and grabbed whatever I could find, carefully gathering Leo's ashes.

Peter stood off to the side. "Forget it, Zoey. I guess Shawn just doesn't like me.

"I only came because my parents wanted to invite you to dinner and thank you for yesterday.

"But with things like this, you should stay and talk to Shawn. I'll go."

He turned toward the door like he meant to leave.

I opened the lunchbox. The food was drowning in hot sauce.I didn't touch it."Zoey, I know you and Peter both love spicy food. You used to put it on everything."But did you know I'm allergic to chili peppers?"Then I tossed the lunchbox straight into the trash.Zoey froze like she'd messed up and had no idea what to do."I'm sorry. I wasn't thinking. I forgot."You can't eat spicy food, so I'll make something else. There has to be something you'll like."I nodded."Exactly. It's a big world. You'll find someone you like eventually."And so will I."Zoey, this is over. Stop chasing me. I'm tired. Let's end this cleanly."Let me go."And let yourself go too."Zoey sobbed so hard she could barely get the words out."But I can't forget you. I really do love you."I ignored her and went upstairs, leaving her there crying. She still refused to give up.For two straight months, she kept showing up.I was done.Luckily, with Nora's help, I'd made good money that year.I

"You did nothing wrong."Leo was wrong for getting sick and burdening his precious mother."And I was wrong for giving up my career to take care of our family and holding you back."Zoey's eyes reddened as she rushed toward me."No, Shawn. That's not true."I stepped away like she was poison.Peter kept up his wounded act and tried to set his flowers in front of Leo's headstone.I knocked them aside."They're filthy."Zoey finally snapped."Shawn, can you stop? What do you want from me?"I didn't bother answering. She was the one who wouldn't let this go.Before she could say anything else, a police car pulled up.Two officers got out and took Zoey and Peter away.Later, I found out Peter had started his company with a business partner. After embezzling company funds, he needed someone to help cover it up by falsifying the books. That was why he brought Zoey on as legal counsel. She trusted him so completely that she signed whatever he put in front of her without even

"Mia's dad is away on a business trip today, so I brought her with me."A wave of sadness hit me.Mia was the same age as Leo.'If only Leo were still here.'But Leo hadn't been as lucky.I sighed.'I hope wherever he is now, he's healthy and surrounded by the love he deserved.'I poured Nora a glass of water."I always thought it was such a shame when you left the industry a few years ago."It's been forever since I've seen you. You've changed a lot. You're way thinner now."But I'm glad you're back. Did you and Zoey work things out?"Nora had helped me more than anyone back then. My sudden departure had dumped a lot of pressure on her.I'd always felt guilty, so I never reached out.She had no idea what had happened.I pulled out a chair and briefly told her about the last few years.Nora kept apologizing."I'm sorry. I had no idea."I shook my head and forced a smile."It's okay. I'm trying to move forward."Nora held out her hand."Shawn, welcome back to fashion

But she'd forgotten I used to be a well-known fashion designer.I gave it all up to care for Leo and help Zoey chase her dream of becoming a lawyer.I handed over everything I earned and quietly carried our family. The day I left the studio, Zoey swore I'd stood by her through her hardest years and promised she'd love only me forever. Then her career took off. She opened her own law firm. And she started spending her days watching Peter's interviews on TV.Peter and I had studied the same field. Once I left fashion, he no longer had me as competition and started collecting awards overseas.Meanwhile, Zoey looked down on me more and more, convinced I was useless. She never saw what I'd sacrificed.I cut her off coldly. "Enough. I'm not interested, and you don't deserve to be a mother. If you want another kid that badly, have one with Peter."Zoey jumped to her feet."This is all Peter's fault. He lied to me. That's why I didn't know our son died."I'm going to confront him r

The more she tried not to hear it, the more I wanted every word to hurt."Zoey, I called you dozens of times the night before last. You said you were overseas for work."Leo was barely hanging on. Even while he was dying, he kept calling for his mom. He kept asking why you hadn't come."He was so thin, nothing but skin and bones. He was six. Do you know how much pain he must've been in?"He kept staring at the hospital door until he finally closed his eyes."He died without ever seeing you."That was your son, Zoey! Leo was a real person. How could you be this heartless?"No. You don't even have a heart!"Tears streamed down Zoey's face, her eyes swollen and red."I really didn't know this would happen."She stepped closer and reached for my hand, but I slapped hers away."Of course you didn't. When Leo died, you were too busy taking care of Peter's parents."I heard everything through the door. You said they were like your own parents."They're your real family, right? Ho

"Dr. Layne, what... what are you saying?"Zoey froze, staring in disbelief."I'm not making this up. Mr. Schneider called you several times the night before last, but you never answered. I was worried just watching him try..."Zoey's hand dropped to her side, phone still in it.Dr. Layne kept talking, but she didn't hear another word. She stared blankly at the corner of the room. Her eyes were empty and unfocused. After a long silence, Zoey finally hung up.Her voice shook. "Shawn, what the hell happened?"I turned away. "I already told you. You just refused to believe me."Zoey shook her head. "No. That's impossible."Peter said he saw Leo yesterday."I let out a bitter laugh. "You're a lawyer. You should know better than to ignore the evidence."How much do you love Peter to be this blind? Fine, don't believe me—but you don't even believe the doctor?"You accused Leo and me of lying to you. Don't you know what kind of kid Leo was?"He never lied."Zoey frowned, still
