Chapter 3

Author: Space Journey
But today, I didn't want to.

My thin reflection smiled back at me from the glass kitchen door.

"Mr. Lundberg, what can I do for you?"

"Yara." His voice was tight with anger. "Get back to work. Now."

"I'm a free woman."

I laughed. I probably looked happy.

"Your orders don't mean anything to me anymore."

I still had three months to spend however I wanted.

Soon enough, another woman would be by his side.

I was just a breeze through his life. I stayed awhile, but left no mark.

His life would keep blooming.

Why would he remember someone like me?

***

Johan never called again.

Then again, someone as proud as him wouldn't worry about an ordinary little flower.

But the pain never left.

The colorful pills barely helped. They only made the nausea worse until I could barely swallow.

After thinking it over, I went back to the hospital.

I'd watched my parents reach the end of this disease. I knew what cancer patients went through.

So I refused chemo.

I only asked for pain meds and sleeping pills.

I loved my long black hair.

I couldn't stand the thought of watching it fall out.

Even if I was dying, I wanted to go with dignity.

I didn't expect to see Johan at the hospital.

He was in the OB waiting area with Lily Cheek—the woman he never got over.

So that was why he was tired of me.

The woman he loved was back.

Time for his secret lover to go.

From a distance, I watched the softness in Johan's eyes.

I didn't know what Lily said, but they smiled at each other, wrapped in quiet warmth.

Bitterness rose in my chest.

Seven years of memories squeezed my heart.

When I lost my parents, he stood with me in the rain without a word.

When my cramps got bad, he'd hand me chamomile tea.

Anything I looked at twice showed up on my desk the next day.

In return, I knew everything about him.

What he liked to eat.

How he took his coffee.

Even what underwear he preferred.

I knew him better than he knew himself.

But he'd never looked at me with that kind of tenderness.

Johan was always cold and controlled with me.

Only in bed did he say my name, his voice almost soft.

Sometimes, it made me think I had a small place in his heart.

But only sometimes.

I chose this arrangement because my parents were sick.

It was always a simple deal.

Money for sex.

We both agreed to it.

No one else was to blame.

***

I swung by Johan's mansion while he was at work.

Weekday morning, which meant he was probably posted up in some conference room, listening to his execs drone on with that dead-eyed poker face.

One tiny frown from him, and everyone under him lost their minds.

Seven years by his side—

Seven years in his bed—

And I still couldn't read him.

The staff knew me.

Last time I packed, they'd watched from a distance, looking confused. Nobody asked why. They knew better.

I'd lived in this mansion for seven years without ever officially being Johan's girlfriend.

How could they not get it?

"These are Mr. Lundberg's favorite dishes. Just follow the recipes."

I'd collected them over the years to keep Johan happy.

I gave the cook the recipes, then handed the butler my notes on Johan's daily routine.

"They're not the same.""How are they different? Johan, whatever you can do with Lily, I can do with Shawn."I watched the panic and frustration in his eyes, and my smile faded."Why do you get to protect Lily like she's made of glass while I'm supposed to just suck it up? You want someone to be the bigger person so badly? Great. You do it.""Yara..."His voice went hoarse, a pleading look flickering in his eyes.I scoffed and looked away. How much could he really love me?***Shawn came.Johan glared at him from the living room while I pulled Shawn into my room.Johan followed us to the door, his face dark as a storm."Yara, do you have to keep trying to make me jealous?""You can leave anytime."My voice stayed flat."I just want to spend what's left of my life quietly with Shawn. Go back to wherever you came from."I was tired of him standing there, playing devoted boyfriend. To my surprise, Johan held himself back.I was done with him.Whatever he did for Lily, I

"Johan..."Before I could say anything, Lily started choking up.Tears filled her eyes as she looked at him."Don't blame Yara. I'm sure she didn't mean to push me..."Unbelievable.She was really going with the helpless-little-angel act.Johan's face was unreadable.I was debating whether to explain when he asked, voice low, "Yara, did you push her?"So he really thought I pushed Lily?"Johan, don't blame Yara. Really, it wasn't her fault."Lily struggled to her feet, the corners of her eyes red from crying. "Johan... my foot hurts."Johan immediately set down the cat food.I watched coldly and smirked. "Johan, help her today, and you're out.""You pushed her. Her foot hurts." He stopped and frowned at me. "She was raised delicate. She can't handle pain."How convenient.I laughed. Then I used every bit of strength I had left and shoved Lily to the floor. She landed hard on her butt, still crying.I smiled."There. THAT was me pushing you."A little bump like befor

He could keep his late-night regret. He didn't love me. Not really. And I sure as hell didn't need his pity.Johan went quiet. After a long moment, he said softly, "Yara... I'm the one who can't live without you.""Oh."I nodded and kept petting Blackie.Maybe I was too calm. He suddenly lifted my chin, making me look at him."I'm saying I love you."He looked dead serious, like he was making some sacred vow.I couldn't help laughing."How much is your love worth?"I brushed his hand away and lazily stroked Blackie."If you'd said that in year one, I would've lost my mind from happiness."In year three, I still would've run back to you with every stupid feeling I'd been holding in."Even in year five, I probably would've loved you like an idiot."But Johan... this is year seven."I watched the color drain from his face. "For seven years, I stayed by your side. I measured every word, handled everything myself, and gave you every ounce of love I had. Now I'm tired. Your

Johan's face darkened further. Without a word, he grabbed my hand and tried to drag me away.Shawn blocked our path."Yara, who are you going with?""You."I tried to pull free of Johan's grip.Shawn and I weren't close, but he was still more trustworthy than Johan right now. Then Johan wrapped me in his arms, picked me up, and ran."You think I'm listening to either of you?""Yara!"Shawn shouted after us and took off after us, but Johan only ran faster. The cold wind made my head ache, so I just closed my eyes.Johan carried me into the car without another word and sped off, leaving Shawn far behind.I stared at the gray sky and sighed."Johan, why are you doing this?"Once it was over, it was over.We hadn't even been in a real relationship. So why was he suddenly all up in my life?As he drove, the corner of his mouth lifted."I feel sorry for you."I actually laughed."I've never seen you as the compassionate type."I held Blackie close, pulling comfort from th

"I fell asleep."It wasn't restful, but sleep itself had become rare.Shawn frowned."The more I think about it, the more you need to be in the hospital."His brows stayed drawn as he urged me to get dressed and wash up."Just think of it as giving yourself a little hope, okay?"I wanted to tell him there was no point. But then I saw the dark circles under his eyes, the worry carved into his exhausted face, and swallowed it.It wasn't often someone cared about me this much.So I gave it a shot.I insisted on bringing Blackie.Holding its tiny, warm body kept me calm enough to get through every exam. But when I went to grab my test results, they were gone.I headed back to the doctor's office and froze.Johan sat across from the doctor, holding my report and asking questions.Seriously? What did it matter if he knew?I didn't need test results to know my body was already falling apart. So when Johan rushed out and confronted me with bloodshot eyes, I still smiled."Mr
