Chapter 2

Auteur: Zhezhi
Back at the estate, I began packing my belongings.

A few days earlier, Vivian had visited the estate.

Holding Lucien's arm, she had pouted playfully.

“This estate is so beautiful, Lucien. It would be wonderful if we could live here after we get married.”

Lucien looked at her tenderly.

“If you like it, then we'll live here.”

Vivian hesitated.

“But I'm worried we'll inconvenience Chloe.”

Lucien turned to look at me, an awkward expression crossing his face.

He had always thought I was spoiled and difficult to please. He was certain I'd throw a tantrum.

Instead, I took a small sip of coffee and replied calmly, “I'll move somewhere else.”

Lucien patted my head and praised me for finally growing up and becoming sensible.

“I own plenty of estates. Pick one and move in.”

I nodded.

“All right.”

I appeared obedient, but inside, the pain felt like a thousand needles piercing my heart.

The entire estate had been designed around my preferences.

But it wasn't the estate itself that I couldn't bear to leave.

It was the ten years I'd spent by Lucien's side.

I packed until late that night. Exhausted and physically weak, I developed a fever.

My health was already poor. A fever could lead to a lung infection and worsen my condition.

When the servants saw how delirious I had become, they immediately called Lucien.

“Don, Miss Moretti has suddenly developed a high fever. She's in very bad shape.”

I could vaguely hear the conversation through my feverish haze.

Lucien replied calmly, “Chloe gets like this all the time. It's nothing serious. Call the family doctor.”

He didn't believe the report that I was sick.

He assumed I was throwing another tantrum, pretending to be ill just to make him come home and keep me company.

This time, however, Lucien was determined not to indulge my behavior any longer.

The servant wanted to explain that things were different this time. Miss Moretti had even coughed up blood.

But Lucien spoke first.

“It's storming tonight, and Vivian is afraid of thunder. I need to stay with her.”

Before the servant could say another word, Lucien hung up.

I took fever medication and placed a cooling patch on my forehead. Something inside me felt as though it had been hollowed out completely.

By the next morning, my fever had subsided.

I contacted my fiancé, Harvey, and told him the truth.

“Harvey, I'm sorry, but we have to cancel the wedding.”

I pushed my medical report across the table.

“I have lung cancer. I can't drag you down with me.”

Harvey and I had entered this engagement for mutual convenience.

He had no romantic feelings for me either. Like me, he was simply following his family's wishes by marrying into the Moretti family.

Although our marriage had been arranged, we got along reasonably well. At the very least, we were friends.

Harvey picked up the report and read it before asking, “Does Mr. Moretti know?”

I shook my head.

“He doesn't. Please keep this a secret for me.”

“My father is about to get married. I don't want to distract him with my problems.”

Harvey looked at me with sympathy. He knew I loved Lucien.

“Chloe, is there anything I can do for you?”

I took out a document and handed it to him.

“I need you to look over this for me.”

Harvey opened it, his expression turning to shock.

“You're transferring all your shares to Mr. Moretti?”

“Chloe, those are the assets your biological parents left you!”

I remained calm.

“I still have part of my trust fund. It'll cover my daily expenses and medical treatment.”

Confusion filled Harvey's eyes.

“Is it really worth it?”

I picked up a pen and signed the document without hesitation.

“Lucien raised me for ten years. I'll never be able to repay that debt.”

“Besides, I've been willful over the years and caused him plenty of trouble.”

I looked up and gave him a faint smile.

“He's getting married.”

“Consider these shares my wedding gift to him.”

I was caught up in an assassination attempt against Lucien by his enemies. The car flipped. Lucien’s arm was pierced by shattered glass and bled continuously. He held my unconscious form and dodged under a hail of bullets. Even after taking a bullet in the arm, Lucien still held me tightly in his arms. His blood soaked my clothes red. Lucien held on until reinforcements arrived before collapsing in a pool of blood. As for me, I had just been discharged and my body was still weak; I soon lost consciousness. Lucien was injured, but the moment he finished bandaging he ran over to find me. He was worried about my safety. “Chloe, how do you feel? Are you hurt anywhere?” Lucien asked anxiously. The injured Lucien looked somewhat disheveled. He wanted to hold me. I avoided him. I said lightly, “I’m fine.” Lucien was nearly heartbroken by my coldness. “Chloe, for you I can give up even my life. Please, love me one more time, alright? This time I absolutely will

Lucien charged toward me like a madman. He grabbed my wrist, completely out of control. “Chloe, it really is you. You're alive!”Tears shimmered in his eyes. He looked at me with the overwhelming joy of someone who had found what he'd lost, mixed with fury at being deceived.“Why did you lie to me? Why did you leave me?” Lucien demanded relentlessly.I met his gaze coldly. “My life has nothing to do with you.”I wanted nothing more to do with him.I tried to wrench my wrist free, but his grip was too strong.“Chloe, you're a member of the Moretti family!” Lucien gritted out. “I have every right to know what happens to you!”I took a deep breath, unwilling to argue with him.“Lucien, let go.”Just then, Antoine walked over.“Sir, please release Chloe.”His expression turned cold, clearly displeased by Lucien's behavior.Lucien's gaze fell on the bouquet of champagne-colored roses in Antoine's arms. His expression darkened.“Chloe, is this man the reason you left?” Lucien growled, abando

Chloe’s POV.I had faked my death. To leave the Moretti family for good, I had deliberately staged a failed surgery. In reality, my operation had been a complete success. After finishing my rehabilitation, I had recovered to the point where I was no different from an ordinary, healthy person.I then submitted an application to Professor William’s PI lab.I had been fascinated by plants and flowers since childhood, and both my undergraduate and master’s degrees were related to botanical research. When I graduated, numerous research teams had offered me positions.Yet I had chosen to return to Sicily.Back then, I had been deeply in love with Lucien. All I wanted was to stay by his side, never leaving him for a moment.A week later, I successfully joined Professor William’s research team. The person assigned to work with me was a tall British man with blond hair and blue eyes. He was courteous, gentlemanly, and spoke with a fluent London accent. His name was Antoine Deschamps, and he was

Lucien’s POV.I completely lost control. Throwing all dignity aside, I grabbed the attending physician by the collar.“The surgery failed? Impossible! I want to see Chloe. Where have you hidden her? She must still be alive!”My head was ringing. I simply couldn't accept Chloe's death. The doctor looked at me with sympathy, his voice heavy with sorrow. “Miss Moretti has indeed passed away.”My entire body trembled. With bloodshot eyes, I roared, “Where is her body? Take me to her!”Seeing me on the verge of a murderous rampage, the doctor nervously swallowed.“At Miss Moretti’s own request…”“Her body was cremated half an hour ago.”His words pierced through me like a thousand sharpened blades, tearing through my insides. My legs suddenly gave way, and I stumbled backward, unable to support myself.Just before I hit the ground, my right-hand man caught me from behind. The grief and agony were almost unbearable, tearing me apart from the inside. Lucien’s POV.At the wedding, I searched the crowd for Chloe. But before I could find her, Harvey approached me and told me she was gone.“Gone? Where did she go?” My heart sank.Harvey remained calm. “Chloe only asked me to deliver the share transfer agreement to you. I don’t know anything else.”He had promised Chloe he would keep her secret.Panic surged through me, and I nearly shouted, “You don’t know? Harvey! Chloe is your fiancée!”“Mr. Moretti,” Harvey replied calmly, “Chloe and I have already called off our wedding.”I was about to demand an explanation when my right-hand man hurried over.“Don, Miss Moretti is in trouble.” His expression was grave. My breath caught, and unease crept into my chest. “What happened to her? Has she thrown another tantrum?”No matter what kind of trouble Chloe got herself into, I would always clean up her mess.I was her adoptive father. Taking care of her unconditionally was my responsibility. My right-hand man handed me a file. “These are Miss M

I returned to the estate. I went to the rose garden and dug up every rose Lucien had planted with his own hands, one by one. I cleared the ground so that in the future it would be convenient for Lucien to plant the tulips Vivian liked. After clearing the roses I returned to the house and continued packing late into the night. I took everything I could take with me. What I couldn’t take I put into the fireplace and burned, together with ten years of attachment and deep love. On the day of the wedding I woke early. My lung disease had flared up; I had barely slept through the pain all night. The Swiss hospital had arranged everything and was only waiting for me to fly over. Seeing me leave with my luggage, the servants came forward to ask where I was going. I didn’t want to make a scene, so I explained, “After Lucien and Vivian get married they’ll move in. I’m moving to another estate.” The servants didn’t suspect anything and watched me leave. On the way to the ai
