Chapter 2 No More Second Chances

Author: Jumping Fish
Then came the tenth betrayal. The eleventh. All the way to the ninety-ninth.

I heard the system question Luna, "Host, this is already your ninety-ninth reincarnation. Haven't you had enough fun yet?"

Luna answered without a care, "This is the last one. Once I complete my hundredth conquest, I'll settle down and live a good life with Julian."

The betrayals in those memories crashed over me like a tidal wave, swallowing me whole.

I curled into myself. It felt as if a dull knife had been driven into my heart, only to turn into a sharpened blade that twisted relentlessly inside me. The pain was so intense I could barely breathe.

Back when we were dating, Luna would cross half the city at dawn with sweat beading on her forehead, just to carefully hand me breakfast with eyes full of affection.

She would go with me to my favorite concerts. Surrounded by crowds, she always nestled close against me. Sometimes she would even shield me with her arm, afraid I might get shoved by the people around us.

She would look at me with starlight in her eyes and sing along to the music beside me.

In those moments, it felt as though the entire world belonged only to the two of us. Now, every sweet promise and every devoted gesture had become the sharpest form of mockery.

The happiness I thought I had was nothing more than a carefully woven lie. And I was the most pathetic fool trapped inside it.

I agreed to bind myself to the Reincarnation System and offered a condition in exchange—my reincarnation, in exchange for the end of Luna's.

'Luna, from this life onward, through every lifetime to come, we will never meet again.'

I leaned against the car window, silently watching the scenery rush past outside as I considered how I would leave this world.

At last, Luna noticed something was wrong.

"Is there something about the wedding arrangements you don't like?" she asked cautiously.

After a moment, I finally spoke. "Why didn't you choose the liquor-filled chocolates I like?"

The first time I ever tasted liquor-filled chocolates, I had shared them with Luna.

"I've decided something. When we get married, we have to have liquor-filled chocolates at the wedding. The flavor is really special."

She had nodded repeatedly. "Okay, okay."

Then she added it to the notes app on her phone.

Now I slowly turned my head and met her eyes. "Why did you choose that premium chocolate brand that's marketed toward expectant mothers as a wedding dessert?"

I watched her quietly, paying attention to every subtle change in her expression.

"Lucien recommended it. He said there might be pregnant guests attending, and liquor-filled chocolates wouldn't be appropriate…"

Her eyelashes fluttered. Her index finger rubbed lightly against the tip of her nose.

I stared at the familiar gesture in silence. Whenever Luna felt nervous, she did that.

"Julian, the wedding gown you designed for me is finally finished," she said quickly. "Weren't you excited to see how it would look on me?"

Only then did I realize the car had already stopped outside Lucien's workplace.

Luna stepped out first and held a hand over the doorframe so I would not bump my head. Then she reached for my hand and intertwined our fingers.

I instinctively tried to pull away, but she tightened her grip instead.

"We're supposed to hold hands for the rest of our lives. That way, I'll never lose you."

Luna lifted our joined hands and gave them a playful swing as she smiled. But she was the one who had deliberately lost me ninety-nine times.

This time, she would never find me again.

The moment we entered the boutique, a young employee hurried over to greet us.

"Ms. Sterling and Mr. Prescott, your relationship is wonderful. It's so enviable. Mr. Prescott, marrying someone as remarkable as Ms. Sterling must make you very happy."

Luna smiled politely. "Please take good care of my fiance."

Then she turned to me, her face full of apology. "I need to try on the gown upstairs by myself. We need to preserve the surprise for the wedding day. Julian, just wait for me in the lounge, okay?"

I had personally sketched every design draft for that gown. Every diamond sewn into it and every strand of white lace carried my hopes for a happy future.

Unfortunately, those hopes shattered the moment I saw it.

Several employees huddled together, whispering anxiously while holding the gown.

I walked over and immediately noticed that the sheer sleeves were wrinkled and twisted. Large stains marked the hem, and many of the diamonds around the neckline were missing.

The instant the gown was unfolded, a pungent odor hit my nose.

The employee holding it apologized repeatedly.

"I'm so sorry, Mr. Prescott. Someone on staff may not have realized this was a custom gown and rented it out by mistake. We promise we'll have it professionally cleaned and restored before your wedding date. Your future wife will receive it in perfect condition."

I shook my head. "That's not necessary."

Since it was ruined, it should be thrown away.

Just like Luna. Since she had betrayed me, I decided to stay away from her for good.

I stood and headed toward the fitting room to find Luna. But before I reached it, I saw Lucien walk into the room as well.

"Julian, she really is your mother, and she's already agreed to our marriage. What she did back then was unforgivable, but since fate brought the two of you back together, it means the bond between mother and son was never truly broken…"The woman quickly chimed in. "Yes, yes. I'm very happy with Luna as my daughter-in-law. She truly loves you. I came back this time because of your marriage…"As she spoke, she forcibly grabbed my hand and placed it into Luna's.A shudder ran through my body. Nausea rose in my throat. "Let go of me. Get out!"A doctor rushed into the room, pulled Luna away, and stepped in front of me. "Are you all right?"I shook my head.Claire Bennett was a world-renowned cardiac surgeon I had hired at great expense. She was also my partner in developing artificial hearts.Luna panicked. Like a dying stray dog clinging to its last breath, she struggled across the floor toward me."Who is she? Are you… together now? I won't allow it. No one can take Julian away

Luna dropped to her knees in front of me. She looked like an abandoned dog begging not to be left behind, her voice filled with despair. "But I don't have another chance to be reborn anymore…"I found it ridiculous. "What does that have to do with me?"If I had not made that deal to take away her endless chances at rebirth, would she still be acting so full of regret? No. She would have kept reincarnating again and again, moving from Lucien to countless other men. Because when someone was capable of betrayal once, there would always be a next time. After I got home, I immediately summoned the system and demanded an explanation. "How is this possible?""Luna signed a rebirth contract through a different method.""What method?"I could not understand it. I had already made a deal with the system. She should not have had another opportunity to be reborn."She committed suicide ninety-nine times, personally experiencing ninety-nine painful deaths in exchange for one final chance at

Lucien looked at Luna in despair. He had never expected her to say something so heartless."We spent countless days and nights together. Is there really not even a place for me in your heart? If you love Julian that much, then why did you come after me? Do you love him so much that you'd even give up your own child?"He shouted until his voice turned hoarse, but he did not receive even the slightest hint of sympathy from Luna. The last update the system gave me about Luna was this. She sent Lucien overseas and ended the pregnancy. After doing everything she believed would atone for her sins, she sought out the system and tried to be reborn once again, only to be told that she had no more chances left.In the end, Luna completely broke down. She frequently harmed herself and became a regular patient in psychiatric clinics. She even erected a gravestone for me in the Sterling family cemetery. The inscription read: Julian, Luna's Beloved. She often sat there from night until dawn.

"She's pregnant, and she still can't help herself. She's already that eager in the car. Oh, and by the way, from our car window, we have a clear view of your hospital room."I forced myself to my feet and walked to the floor-to-ceiling window. The car downstairs rocked slightly. Then the movement grew stronger. And stronger.Watching the scene below, I summoned the system once more. "You have a way to let me leave this world, don't you? Please help me."When I opened my eyes again, I was back in my college dorm room. I had been reborn to a time before I ever met Luna. The malfunction of my artificial heart had triggered acute heart failure. The doctors later told Luna that they found me unconscious beside the floor-to-ceiling window.Through that same window, Luna saw the car where she and Lucien had just been together. She returned to the house that was supposed to become our marital home. Every piece of furniture and every decoration had been chosen together with love.Yet in

Luna's body tensed instantly, and she quickly pulled her hand free from Lucien's grasp."Julian, you're awake! I… I was just about to ask the doctor about your condition when I ran into Lucien. His girlfriend is pregnant, and he's not familiar with this hospital. I was only helping him out by bringing him here."Luna hurriedly explained herself, then took two quick steps to my side.My gaze fell on Luna's stomach, and my chest tightened so suddenly that I struggled to breathe. I closed my eyes for a moment before finally speaking. "Congratulations, Mr. White. How far along is your girlfriend? Have the checkups been going well?"A look of pure happiness crossed Lucien's face as he glanced at Luna. His eyes sparkled with excitement as he bragged, "Just over a month. The baby's mother has been nervous about everything, and I couldn't bear to let her come alone, so I came with her."The doctor said the baby is very healthy. I'll be a father soon. I was so happy when I found out she

The door was slightly ajar, so I could hear every word of their conversation. And I could see everything.Luna was straddling Lucien's lap, her arms draped loosely around his necks. His hands roamed possessively over her body.Every detail was painfully clear."Why do you feel even better now?""What do you think? I have a prenatal checkup tomorrow. Are you coming with me? Ah…."Luna's voice turned soft and breathy as she buried her face against Lucien."You're going to wear a custom-made wedding gown and marry him, yet you're carrying my child to a tiny rundown hospital for your prenatal appointments…""Julian has had checkups at all those high-end hospitals. The doctors and nurses know I'm his fiancee." Luna's tone cooled. "Lucien, I remember telling you this before. You can have whatever you want, but if this ever reaches Julian, you know exactly what kind of temper I have."If you want this relationship to continue, then remember your place. You're the other man no one can
