Chapter 1

[Whitney is definitely coming, right? She waited ten whole years for Jethro! How could anyone not be moved by that kind of devotion?]

[Seriously. There hasn't been so much as a rumor about her getting married all these years. I always knew she was still waiting for Jethro.]

[I really want these two to end up together. I'm so invested in them!]

I stared at the messages racing across the screen. My fingers tightened around my phone without me realizing it, but my eyes drifted toward Whitney Charlton, who was sleeping peacefully beside me.

She looked completely at ease, her breathing slow and even. Under the soft glow of the bedside lamp, the usually cool, distant lines of her profile looked surprisingly gentle.

Fifteen years.

Fifteen years had passed since my senior year of high school, when I awakened to my memories and learned the truth. I was not the hero of this story. I was not even an important side character. I was just some forgettable extra whose name barely mattered.

When I started college, the first thing I did was deliberately get close to Jethro Scott. He was the brightest, most dazzling guy on campus, the kind of person who seemed born to be the center of attention.

As I knew how the story was supposed to go, I always managed to show up at exactly the right moment when he needed someone. Whenever he was hurting, I knew exactly what to say. Before long, I had naturally become his best friend.

Everyone used to say, "Patrick, you lucky bastard. How did you end up becoming Jethro's best friend?"

Only I knew the truth.

I was simply riding his spotlight, borrowing some of his main-character luck to make my own life a little easier.

Throughout our four years of college, I went everywhere with Jethro. I joined him in all kinds of activities, met everyone in his circle, and eventually met Whitney too.

She came from a wealthy family, had the grades to match, and was as icy and untouchable as they came. Yet somehow, Jethro was the only person she ever seemed to see.

Then graduation came. Jethro chose Yoana Gibson, the most popular girl on campus, and left the country with her.

Before he left, he clapped me on the shoulder and grinned. "Patrick, Whitney's a really great girl. You two should get together. Then I'll be able to leave without worrying about her."

As I watched his easy, carefree smile, I knew the truth better than anyone.

Whitney only had eyes for him. According to the original story, ten years later, when Jethro returned home, Whitney was supposed to run straight into his arms with our child in tow.

But so what?

Whitney's family background, education, and abilities were all things someone like me, a guy from an ordinary family, could never reach no matter how hard I worked. Marrying her meant I could use her connections to move up, enter better circles, and build a network of my own.

As for love? I had never expected it.

Hence, when Jethro tried to set us up, I did not hesitate. I told Whitney how I felt. Back then, I was as calm as if I were closing a business deal. I had every step planned out.

What I had not planned for was the way a person's heart could slowly soften after spending day after day with someone.

By our third year of marriage, my company successfully got off the ground. Whitney quietly put access to many of her connections and resources at my disposal.

In our fifth year, our son, Lucas Cooper, was born. Whitney curled up against me and whispered, "I'm so happy."

She remembered that I could not stand cilantro. She knew I had a sensitive stomach, so she always made sure I had my medicine nearby.

In our eighth year, my company ran into a crisis. Without a second thought, she used her own savings to help me get through it.

Ten years.

For ten years, everyone kept telling me the same thing.

"Patrick, you married a good woman."

However, it was only a flicker.I crouched down, gently stroked Lucas' hair, and said, "Lucas, we aren't going to get back together. However, I'll always be here for you. Your mom will always be here for you too. We both love you."Once I was done, I stood and looked at Whitney. My voice was cold."Whitney, I won't forgive you. What happened back then is like a thorn buried in my heart. I can't pull it out, and the wound never really healed. I don't love you anymore. I don't even hate you. There is nothing left between us except Lucas."Whitney's face went completely white. Despair filled her eyes."Why?" she whispered. "I know I was wrong. I've changed. Why can't you just give me one more chance?""A chance?" I looked at her. "I gave you a chance. When Jethro came back and you told me you weren't going to the reunion, I gave you a chance. When you told me you had to work that weekend, yet I saw you in Jethro's arms—and I was still holding on to that last little bit of hope."Yo

Lucas nodded, looking like he only half understood, then wrapped his arms around me. "Dad, I miss you."Every time I heard those words, something inside me softened. I would hug him back and tell him, "I missed you too. I'll always be here for you."…That day, after finishing up some work at the office, I was on my way to the gym. I had just walked out of the building when I spotted a familiar figure. It was Jethro. He was out of prison. He had been released a year early for good behavior. He had lost a lot of weight. His clothes were faded and worn, his hair was a mess, and his eyes looked clouded. He no longer resembled the dazzling golden boy who had once been the center of attention on campus. The moment he saw me, he rushed over and grabbed my arm."Patrick, please. You have to help me." His voice was hoarse and desperate. "I don't have a penny to my name. I don't even have anywhere to live. Please, just give me some money. I need to survive."I pulled my arm free and st

Yoana had even more evidence than I did.Not only did she have proof that Jethro had cheated on her during their marriage, but she also had text messages showing that he had stolen confidential company information and sold it to a competitor, along with bank records and witness statements.Jethro had no way to deny the charges, so he pleaded guilty in court. The court ordered him to reimburse Yoana's company for its losses and sentenced him to three years in prison for infringement of trade secrets.Around the same time, his divorce from Yoana was finalized, leaving him without any share of the marital assets. The outcome came as no surprise. In the end, both Jethro and Whitney lost everything they had, and both were left penniless and sent to prison. No one in the old class group chat felt sorry for them anymore. Everyone agreed that they had brought it on themselves.Someone asked me if I had known all along that things would end this way.I simply replied, "You always have t

Whitney was still trying to drag out the divorce, but the court already had evidence that she had transferred marital assets and misappropriated company funds. The judge ordered a court date anyway. The day before the hearing, Tessa went over all the evidence with me one last time."Mr. Cooper, the evidence is conclusive. We have an exceptionally strong case," she said confidently.I nodded. "Thank you for everything.""It's my job." Tessa smiled. "Honestly, it's a relief to have a client like you. You know exactly what you want, and you came prepared with solid evidence."…On the day of the hearing, I walked into the courthouse alone, dressed in a simple white outfit.Whitney and Jethro were there too.Whitney was wearing plain clothes. She had already been suspended from her company over the suspected misappropriation of company funds and was under police investigation. For the time being, she had been released on bail.Jethro looked exhausted, with dark circles under his e

I went to work and carried on with my life as usual, as if none of this had ever happened.Every now and then, though, I would think about Lucas. I would remember his little voice calling me Dad, the way he used to throw himself into my arms and act all sweet and clingy. Then I would remember what he had said at the birthday party."I hate you. You're a bad person."My heart still clenched whenever I thought about it. However, I knew I could not let myself give in.His hostility toward me was something Whitney and Jethro had taught him. All I could do was wait, wait for him to grow up and wait for him to understand right from wrong. The days passed, and Tessa continued preparing the case in an orderly fashion. She told me Whitney had approached her privately and tried to convince her to get me to drop the lawsuit. She had even offered her a huge sum of money.Tessa turned her down without hesitation.Just when I thought the lawsuit might drag on for a long time, unexpected news

The moment I said the words 'walk away with nothing', the entire ballroom fell silent.Whitney's smile froze on her face, and her expression darkened."Patrick, don't push your luck." Her voice was icy and angry. "I've already been more than fair to you. And now you have the nerve to ask me to walk away with nothing? Fine. Then I won't divorce you."Jethro's expression changed too. He slipped an arm around Whitney's shoulders and sneered."Patrick, have you lost your mind? You should be grateful Whitney is willing to give you any money at all. Did you really think you could hold this over our heads?"I looked at the two of them, furious and scrambling to defend themselves, and gave a quiet laugh."Whether I can hold anything over you isn't for you to decide." I raised my phone and projected the evidence onto the ballroom's giant screen. The transfer records appeared first, followed by the documents showing the changes in share ownership and the property transfer records.
