Chapter 5

Author: Yay Latte
The three of them stood together, looking like one big happy family.

People around the room had already started whispering.

"Isn't that Whitney? Who's the guy she's with? He's gorgeous."

"I think that's Jethro. He was the golden boy back in college. I heard he just got back from overseas."

"Whitney's married, isn't she? I remember her husband was one of our classmates. Patrick, right?"

"Wow! Looking at them, I'd say Patrick doesn't stand a chance."

I listened to the whispers without letting a single emotion show on my face. I picked up a glass of champagne and took a small sip.

Then someone asked Jethro, "Jethro, didn't you marry Yoana and move overseas back then? How come you came back alone?"

The smile on Jethro's face faded for just a second. Then he put on a perfectly measured look of vulnerability.

"I was young and stupid back then. I thought love was all that mattered. After I married Yoana, she... She started staying away from home all the time. And whenever she came back, she smelled like a different man's cologne."

His eyes grew slightly red as he spoke. Whitney immediately slipped an arm around his shoulders and murmured something comforting.

A wave of sympathy swept through the room.

Jethro closed his eyes for a moment and swallowed hard before continuing in a restrained voice, "I couldn't take it anymore, so I divorced her and came back home. Luckily... Luckily, I had Whitney to help me through it."

He looked at Whitney, his eyes filled with tenderness. Whitney tightened her grip on his hand. Then she looked around the room, her voice low and full of pain.

"The truth is... Patrick and I have been over for a long time. All these years, he's been suspicious of everything. He thinks I'm involved with every man I talk to.

"If I work late, he accuses me of cheating. If I have dinner with a male client, he assumes I'm having an affair. I couldn't take it anymore, so I asked for a divorce, but he refused. He even threatened to kill himself if I left him..."

"Oh, my God. What happened to Patrick?"

"That's terrifying. Is he seriously unstable?"

"Whitney's been through so much. Getting stuck with a guy like that..."

The whispers grew louder. Everyone was looking at me now with a mixture of pity and disgust.

Yes.

They had finally noticed me.

I stood alone in the corner, letting their eyes fall on me. I felt completely calm.

Jethro walked over to me, his voice carrying the smug generosity of someone offering a favor.

"Patrick, we've known each other for years, so I'm going to give you some advice. Let her go. Whitney doesn't love you anymore. The more you cling to her, the more embarrassed you'll make yourself for yourself.

"If you're willing to divorce her, Whitney said she'll give you a portion of the marital assets. It'll be enough to support you for the rest of your life."

I looked at Whitney. "Do you feel the same way?"

Whitney avoided my eyes. Her voice was clear and firm. "Patrick, let's just end this peacefully. The way you've been acting... It's exhausting me."

"Dad, just leave Mom alone!" Lucas came running over too. He grabbed the hem of my jacket, his little face full of resentment. "Jethro is always so nice to Mom. He's nice to me too. Can't you be more like him?"

I looked at the child who shared my blood, the child I had raised for five years. Now, he was looking at me with nothing but disgust, siding with another man and accusing me.

Whatever warmth I had left inside me disappeared completely.

I took a deep breath, lifted my head, and looked at Whitney and Jethro. My voice was clear and calm.

"I agree to the divorce."

A smile immediately spread across Whitney's and Jethro's faces. Their expressions showed a mixture of triumph, relief, and the smug satisfaction of people who were convinced they had already won.

But then I continued, I added, "However, I want Whitney to walk away with nothing."

However, it was only a flicker.I crouched down, gently stroked Lucas' hair, and said, "Lucas, we aren't going to get back together. However, I'll always be here for you. Your mom will always be here for you too. We both love you."Once I was done, I stood and looked at Whitney. My voice was cold."Whitney, I won't forgive you. What happened back then is like a thorn buried in my heart. I can't pull it out, and the wound never really healed. I don't love you anymore. I don't even hate you. There is nothing left between us except Lucas."Whitney's face went completely white. Despair filled her eyes."Why?" she whispered. "I know I was wrong. I've changed. Why can't you just give me one more chance?""A chance?" I looked at her. "I gave you a chance. When Jethro came back and you told me you weren't going to the reunion, I gave you a chance. When you told me you had to work that weekend, yet I saw you in Jethro's arms—and I was still holding on to that last little bit of hope."Yo

Lucas nodded, looking like he only half understood, then wrapped his arms around me. "Dad, I miss you."Every time I heard those words, something inside me softened. I would hug him back and tell him, "I missed you too. I'll always be here for you."…That day, after finishing up some work at the office, I was on my way to the gym. I had just walked out of the building when I spotted a familiar figure. It was Jethro. He was out of prison. He had been released a year early for good behavior. He had lost a lot of weight. His clothes were faded and worn, his hair was a mess, and his eyes looked clouded. He no longer resembled the dazzling golden boy who had once been the center of attention on campus. The moment he saw me, he rushed over and grabbed my arm."Patrick, please. You have to help me." His voice was hoarse and desperate. "I don't have a penny to my name. I don't even have anywhere to live. Please, just give me some money. I need to survive."I pulled my arm free and st

Yoana had even more evidence than I did.Not only did she have proof that Jethro had cheated on her during their marriage, but she also had text messages showing that he had stolen confidential company information and sold it to a competitor, along with bank records and witness statements.Jethro had no way to deny the charges, so he pleaded guilty in court. The court ordered him to reimburse Yoana's company for its losses and sentenced him to three years in prison for infringement of trade secrets.Around the same time, his divorce from Yoana was finalized, leaving him without any share of the marital assets. The outcome came as no surprise. In the end, both Jethro and Whitney lost everything they had, and both were left penniless and sent to prison. No one in the old class group chat felt sorry for them anymore. Everyone agreed that they had brought it on themselves.Someone asked me if I had known all along that things would end this way.I simply replied, "You always have t

Whitney was still trying to drag out the divorce, but the court already had evidence that she had transferred marital assets and misappropriated company funds. The judge ordered a court date anyway. The day before the hearing, Tessa went over all the evidence with me one last time."Mr. Cooper, the evidence is conclusive. We have an exceptionally strong case," she said confidently.I nodded. "Thank you for everything.""It's my job." Tessa smiled. "Honestly, it's a relief to have a client like you. You know exactly what you want, and you came prepared with solid evidence."…On the day of the hearing, I walked into the courthouse alone, dressed in a simple white outfit.Whitney and Jethro were there too.Whitney was wearing plain clothes. She had already been suspended from her company over the suspected misappropriation of company funds and was under police investigation. For the time being, she had been released on bail.Jethro looked exhausted, with dark circles under his e

I went to work and carried on with my life as usual, as if none of this had ever happened.Every now and then, though, I would think about Lucas. I would remember his little voice calling me Dad, the way he used to throw himself into my arms and act all sweet and clingy. Then I would remember what he had said at the birthday party."I hate you. You're a bad person."My heart still clenched whenever I thought about it. However, I knew I could not let myself give in.His hostility toward me was something Whitney and Jethro had taught him. All I could do was wait, wait for him to grow up and wait for him to understand right from wrong. The days passed, and Tessa continued preparing the case in an orderly fashion. She told me Whitney had approached her privately and tried to convince her to get me to drop the lawsuit. She had even offered her a huge sum of money.Tessa turned her down without hesitation.Just when I thought the lawsuit might drag on for a long time, unexpected news

The moment I said the words 'walk away with nothing', the entire ballroom fell silent.Whitney's smile froze on her face, and her expression darkened."Patrick, don't push your luck." Her voice was icy and angry. "I've already been more than fair to you. And now you have the nerve to ask me to walk away with nothing? Fine. Then I won't divorce you."Jethro's expression changed too. He slipped an arm around Whitney's shoulders and sneered."Patrick, have you lost your mind? You should be grateful Whitney is willing to give you any money at all. Did you really think you could hold this over our heads?"I looked at the two of them, furious and scrambling to defend themselves, and gave a quiet laugh."Whether I can hold anything over you isn't for you to decide." I raised my phone and projected the evidence onto the ballroom's giant screen. The transfer records appeared first, followed by the documents showing the changes in share ownership and the property transfer records.
