Chapter 8 Some Things Can't Be Fixed

Autor: Foxfall1
Cameron went still as the wind caught one corner of the cake box, tilting it slightly in his hands.

"Noelle, I know I screwed up."

It was the first time in eight years I had ever heard him admit that, yet somehow, I felt nothing.

He stepped toward me quickly. "I got the ring back. I had the shawl sent to you. And the earring…" His voice faltered. "I'll find it. I swear I will."

Before I could respond, he pulled out his phone.

"I'll deal with Rose and go public. I'll do it right now." H

The day the divorce became final, snow fell heavily over Rimevik. Nathan sent the court order that afternoon, and I froze. My eyes fixed on the screen as the words sank in for what felt like forever. 'The marriage between Noelle Gill and Cameron Baxter is hereby dissolved.' Just one sentence, and eight years of my life folded shut, reduced to a line on a page. That night, Cameron sent me one final email. It contained only a message—no greeting beyond my name and no signature at the end. 'Noelle, today I went to the theater where your mom used to perform. I sat in the last row and watched an ordinary play. When it ended, I remembered something you told me years ago—that your mom always looked toward the left side of the audience during her final bow because that was where you used to sit and wait for her when you were little. 'I don't think I really listened when you told me that. I'm sorry.' I lingered on the last line, reading it twice before I could move on. 'Also, I

After Cameron returned home, he announced that he was stepping away from acting indefinitely. The statement was released that afternoon. 'Due to personal circumstances, I will be taking an indefinite hiatus from all professional commitments.' The internet exploded almost immediately. Some people called him pathetic for throwing away his career over a woman. Others defended him, saying it was obvious he was not doing well. Then people started going back through the livestream. Old interviews resurfaced, along with archived posts, emails, and screenshots no one had paid much attention to before. Little by little, the truth came out. People found the statements I had written when Cameron was being torn apart online, the penalty fees I had paid when he could not afford to get out of bad contracts, and even traces of the things I had sold to keep him in acting school. Eventually, someone dug up one of Rose's old private accounts. Buried among the posts was something she

Cameron did not take the papers. He just stared at the first page as though he could not quite believe what he was seeing. "I'm not signing that." I set the agreement down on the stone steps beside us. "Then, we'll go to court." His head came up sharply. "Noelle, we've been together for eight years. You're really going to throw all of that away?" I held his gaze. "I'm not the one who threw it away, Cameron. You lost it little by little." He shook his head. "I was busy." "Is that supposed to explain everything?" I asked him. "You were too busy to remember my birthday, but not too busy to leave at night for Rose. "You didn't consider how it would affect me when you let her wear my wedding ring or when you gave her my mom's belongings. Yet, you still didn't care when you made me stand before those cameras and deny our eight years of marriage."… By the time I finished, his face had gone pale. I did not want to argue anymore, so I turned to leave. Before I could get far,

His fingers were stiff with cold as he unlocked the screen. "I'll tell everyone you're my wife." I reached out and covered the phone with my hand. Hope immediately flashed across his face. "You don't want me to post it?" "No," I said. "There's just no need anymore." The color slowly drained from his face. I pushed the phone back toward him. "You still don't get it, Cameron. I didn't leave because you wouldn't make our marriage public." He swallowed hard. "Then, why?" "Because you kn

  • The Life I Was Waiting For   Chapter 7 Too Late to Make It Right

The next morning, Nathan had my mom's shawl delivered to Rimevik. When I opened the package, I could only stare. The pale blue shawl had been poorly washed. Its fabric was wrinkled, and the crooked red stitching my mom had hand-sewn near one corner had broken. The tear appeared fresh, as if it had been yanked open in haste. The old wooden trunk had been returned too. I opened it and froze. One of the earrings was missing. I stared at the empty space where it should have been until my eyes burned. My mom wore those earrings during her final performance. Years later, when Cameron needed money for acting school, I sold almost everything she had left me. Those earrings were the only thing I could not bring myself to part with. And now, only one remained. I immediately texted Nathan, 'Where's the other earring?'… Ten minutes later, his reply came through. 'Mr. Baxter's team says Ms. Berger misplaced it during the livestream shoot. They're looking for it.' I stare

  • The Life I Was Waiting For   Chapter 6 Twenty-Seven Calls

An automated message came through the speaker. "The number you have dialed is not in service." Cameron stood in the study for a long time. Nathan Hayes, my attorney, later told me that Cameron called my number twenty-seven times that night. At first, he was angry. Then, he threw his phone across the room. Eventually, he crouched beside my desk and went through every document I had left behind. I had prepared a complete handover before I left, covering everything Cameron might need over the next six months. His schedule included detailed notes on which producers hated being kept waiting, which directors needed space before difficult conversations, which fan communities were becoming volatile, and which subjects certain sponsors wanted avoided entirely. I had even listed the hotels that would prepare plain oatmeal or soup in advance whenever his stomach acted up from working too long without eating. Everything was there, neatly organized and easy to follow. Everything exc
