"That's the high-ranking official's son! What a golden chance. If Yasmine hadn't brought them that meal back then, do you really think you'd have this shot at marrying up?"

"So what if his dad's got leverage? Anthony's just a grunt for now, and I'm focused about getting into college. After that, life will be sweet. There will be a line of decent guys to choose from!"

My parents tried every way to convince her, but my sister, Holly Shaw, was as stubborn as a horse.

Back in the seventies when Anthony Brown and his mother, Amelia Brown, showed up at our farm, they were skin and bones, practically bullied out of their wits.

Nobody dared to get near them, except for me, sneaking out in the dead of night with some food and warm clothes from our stash.

For that, once the pair made it back to the city, marrying the girl who saved them was the first thing on their list.

In my previous life, Holly had snatched the credit for that good deed.

It was too dark for Amelia to make out my face, so she asked which family I belonged to.

My parents did not hesitate to claim it was Holly, their darling eldest, who had done the deed.

I had to watch Holly bask in the limelight as the high-ranking official's daughter-in-law.

"College isn't free, you know. We're so broke we're rattling, how are we supposed to pay for your education!"

Dad was so mad he slammed his pipe on the table, nearly knocking it over.

"Well, why not marry off Yasmine to Anthony? Demand a hefty amount of money, and there's my college fund," Holly suggested.

Holly knew well that marrying Anthony meant a one-way trip to the army base on the frontier, with no coming back.

However, she was ready to throw me into the fire.

She strode over to me and yanked the book from my grip, the pages' jagged edges scraping my palms raw.

"I've talked to the school. You're officially unenrolled. Give me all your textbooks and workbooks. School's out of the picture for you now."

It was all Holly's doing, of course.

I met my sister's eyes and grinned. "Fine by me."

Mom watched Holly, her mind made up, and let out a sigh. "You're clueless about what's good for you, kiddo. You'll be kicking yourself one day!"

Then, she glanced my way and said, "Lucky you! Off to the Browns' place. Don't forget to scout some decent guys for your sister. Skip nobodies like Anthony. She's college-bound and deserves a guy with power, like the Commander!"

My parents always put my sister first when it came to the good stuff.

As for me? Two words—not worthy.

Just because my birth was a three-day ordeal that nearly ended in disaster, I was branded the family curse—the bringer of bad luck.

Whenever my sister gave me a hard time, our parents saw it as payback.

Then, by shipping off their curse—me—they could scrape together some college money for my sister.

They figured it was a fair trade, so they rushed to tell the representative of the Brown family to double the wedding gift, sealing the deal.

The representative agreed, but not without an eye roll.

As she left, I caught her snide whisper.

"Making a mountain out of a molehill over a simple favor!"

Two years on, Anthony's stellar performance earned him a promotion to Chief of Staff. My business was booming, breaking into international markets. I had set up a pearl shop in numerous malls and toyed with the idea of launching my own brand.Anthony backed me all the way, but the long stretches apart were wearing on him. He was dead set on a transfer back to Riverton. We argued over that, but I was the one who lectured him."Don't you see? If you transfer now, all the hardship on Darak Island will have been for nothing. You're a year away from finishing. Can't you stick it out?""It's been too long without you. I miss you, honey."I massaged my temples and shot him a look. "Suck it up. We're waiting another year. Even if you were in Riverton, I'm swamped with the brand right now!"Anthony caved, though not without a pout. A year later, he got the call up to the capital. He contemplated deeply before ringing me up."Babe, what do you think about setting up the brand's headquar

A roughly tied bandage circled my forehead, my eyes struggling to focus through the haze.I pounded on the cellar door with all my strength, once, twice, thrice."Holly! Dad! Mom! Let me out!"My hands were raw, bloodied from the effort, when I finally heard a stir from above."Yasmine, you've got two choices. Go back and file for divorce yourself, so I can marry Anthony, or I'll set you up with some guy and seal the deal. Then, let's see if Anthony still wants you, you damaged goods!"What choice did I have? The only sensible thing was to play along and agree to the divorce."Holly, I'll do it. I'll file for the divorce. Just let me out!"A sliver of light pierced the darkness as Holly's face came into view."Just remember, you better tell them I was the one who saved them back then! Or else..."A sudden pain exploded in my shoulder as Holly, for some unfathomable reason, turned on me and kicked, sending me crashing down the stairs. My back was tingling from the hard smack a

Darak Island was a stone's throw from Lascora, its shellfish farming industry on the rise.In my previous life, I worked at the city's Fisheries Bureau, rubbing shoulders with plenty of shellfish farmers. That was when I fell in love with the art of shellfish farming. If it were not for my early death, I would have teamed up with someone to get into shellfish farming in the future.I finally had the chance to dive into the shellfish market and sell pearls.Anthony was all for it. He even got a friend from Lascora to set me up with a place to sleep so I could rest easy.Whenever I could, I would zip back to Darak Island to spend a few days with Anthony. However, when things got hectic, I would go ten days, even two weeks without contacting him.In no time, like three months, I had the local shellfish game figured out. Thanks to my previous life at the Fisheries Bureau, lining up buyers was a piece of cake. Before I could truly got the pearls, I had already locked in deals with

"Yasmine, that workbook is a total waste of time, and the tutor Anthony's mom hired is a joke. I can't even answer half the questions!" Holly complained. My parents were quick to soothe her. "If you're struggling, chances are everyone else is too. We Shaws have always been lucky, so you're bound to ace it!"Holly perked up at that, a hint of optimism in her voice."You know, you might be onto something. Maybe I'll slide into a top university after all!"I could not help but snicker at her hopeful logic.Holly, already on edge and making excuses, caught my laughter and saw it as an opportunity to lash out."If I don't make it, it's all going to be your fault and that lousy workbook's," she declared, storming over to me with a raised hand. However, before she could land a hit, Anthony had her arm twisted behind her back."Ouch! Anthony, let go!" Holly yelped, drawing a crowd of curious onlookers fresh out of their exams.Anthony, still in his crisp military uniform, did not want

I hurried over to Anthony, and the warmth in his eyes made me let out a relieved breath."Did it work out?" I asked."It's done!"I tore open the envelope to find a transfer order to Darak Island. It was not quite what I had hoped for, and a wave of disappointment washed over me. I looked up at him, "So, you still have to leave?"Anthony gave my head a gentle pat, trying to sound upbeat. "This is a pretty good outcome, you know. Being a soldier means facing some tough times."I got where he was coming from, but worry gnawed at me."Why are you so concerned about where I'm posted? Look, you don't have to tag along. The island's no picnic, but you can stay back at the base, get a job, or even hit the books for college. It's all up to you."His voice was free of any blame, so earnest that I was thrown off balance."What are you saying? It's not the hardship I mind, it's just that I'm scared for you...""Scared of what for me?"With a tilt of his head, Anthony's face was suddenl

Holly's laughter rang out, unrestrained and mocking."Yasmine, who would've thought your infamous curse label would reach your dear husband's ears so fast?"She paused, her voice dropping to a whisper. "A curse and a loser. You two are a match made in heaven."My fists balled up tight, knuckles popping with the strain.Anthony stumbled in, shoved by his buddies, his face a mask of reluctance.Holly, spotting him, crossed her arms and stood tall, her statuesque figure drawing eyes even in a crowded room. However, Anthony's gaze cut through the crowd, fixed solely on me.I caught sight of his striking features and paused, taken aback. His stern look was even more captivating up close than any celebrity splashed across a movie poster. It made sense why Holly always bragged about Anthony's good looks.Noticing the boutonniere pinned to my chest, Anthony realized the bride had been switched. His brows knitted together as he blurted, "Why is it you? Wasn't I marrying Holly?"Holl
