Vittoria’s heart faltered, beating out of rhythm, as if losing control with every passing second.

Her lungs refused air, her chest tightening in a growing suffocation, as if something invisible crushed her from within.

A wave of raw, overwhelming panic consumed her, as if the world crumbled beneath her feet, leaving her with nothing to cling to.

Desperate, she stumbled through the corridor, lurching as if the floor had turned treacherous under her feet.

The world around her dissolved into blurred shapes, her vision narrowing and clouding, as if fear had blindfolded her eyes.

The walls seemed to close in, swallowing the air. The stairs, so familiar, now stretched like an endless nightmare.

She ran—or tried to—driven by a primal, irrational urgency stronger than the fear itself.

When she finally reached the top of the staircase, her legs gave out.

She gripped the banister, fingers digging in almost painfully.

Her chest heaved in a frantic rhythm, and for a moment, she thought she might

Vincenzo ladled the first spoonful of traditional Minestra di Lenticchie, still steaming with the rich warmth of the stew. Before bringing it to her lips, he broke off a piece of Sicilian bread, its golden crust crisp and its soft interior yielding, dipping it slowly into the hot broth. Then he offered the spoon with the soaked bread to Vittoria, the gesture carrying more than mere nourishment.“Open your mouth, amore,” Vincenzo urged, his tone soft, almost pleading, as if that simple act held his way of ensuring she stayed strong, nourished, and safe.Vittoria let out a quiet laugh, shy at his unexpected tenderness, but complied. The simple, homely flavor spread through her mouth, warming more than her body; it warmed her soul.“Is it good?” he asked, watching every nuance of her expression.“It’s perfect,” Vittoria whispered, her eyes shining more from his caring gesture than from the soup itself. He reached out, brushing a loose strand of hair from her face, and pressed a lingering

Alfonso cast a careful glance around, scanning every corner of the café. The movement was subtle but calculated, as if gauging the distance between curious eyes and prying ears.“So, who’s the figlio di puttana who tried to kill my daughter?” Alfonso asked, his voice low as his fingers grazed the menu on the table. “That wasn’t our deal,” he added, without a trace of genuine concern for her well-being.“I honestly don’t know,” Fabrizio replied, bringing his espresso to his lips. “I heard about it from Tommaso, and so far, the theory is a domestic accident,” he said, setting the cup back on its saucer unhurriedly. “You really think it was an attack?”“Well, we tried to blow up that bastard figlio di puttana with his car,” Alfonso said, a sadistic smile spreading across his lips. “Who’s to say someone else didn’t have the same idea?”“In that case, we need to align with the other Dons,” Fabrizio said, lowering his voice even further. “If another hand was in this game, it means someone m

Vincenzo let out a dry, sarcastic laugh, the sound echoing like a blow in the silence. He kept his hand under the running water, watching blood trickle between his fingers, his gaze cold and fixed on some distant point.“Of all possible problems, I’ll admit, this one never crossed my mind,” Vincenzo remarked, his voice almost amused, as if he found bitter pleasure in the irony. He turned off the faucet, letting water drip lazily from his fingers, savoring the irony before deciding what to do next.“Henri called me after several failed attempts to reach you,” Tommaso said, his tone measured but heavy with implication. “He said he’ll be in Savoca in two days.”“Great,” Vincenzo muttered, maintaining a mask of calm, though his blood boiled beneath the surface. “Call him, Tom,” he ordered, his voice eerily composed, as if the world around him wasn’t crumbling.Tommaso complied unquestionably. He pulled his phone from his pocket with a firm gesture and, without wasting time, dialed Henri’s

In the apartment, the hours seemed to drag as Vincenzo persistently tried to get Vittoria to eat, while her relentless tears refused to stop.Throughout the night, Vincenzo lay with his wife nestled against his chest, his arm wrapped around her firmly, as if he could shield her even from her thoughts. The room was steeped in a heavy silence, broken only by the uneven sound of her breathing, punctuated by stifled sobs.“I just wanted to make dinner,” Vittoria began, her voice weak and choked, each word heavy with weight. “And a dessert,” she added, closing her eyes for a moment before continuing. “Minutes before the explosion, I put a cassata in the oven.”Vincenzo ran his hand gently down her back in a soothing gesture, trying to comfort her somehow, as if the warmth of his touch could, even for a moment, erase the burden she carried.“Then I went back to the living room and asked one of the maids to make an espresso,” she continued, her voice faltering, as if each syllable bore an un

Fabrizio let a slow, satisfied smile spread, savoring Antonella’s cunning.“How’d you pull it off?” Fabrizio asked, giving a subtle nod to the bartender for a shot of whiskey.“What is a man's greatest weakness?” Antonella replied, raising the glass to her lips with a seductive smile. She placed the glass on the counter with a light touch and let her fingers explore the fabric of his shirt, slowly moving up until they reached his face. There, she traced the outline of his lips with her thumb, the touch slow and suggestive, her gaze locking onto his with an intensity that blended desire and provocation.“Exactly—a beautiful, irresistible woman,” she finished, whispering into his ear with a voice laced with mischief.Fabrizio rubbed his eyebrow lightly, confusion clouding his expression. In the plans they’d laid out, what Antonella seemed to be scheming didn’t quite add up.“Oh, amore, don’t make that face,” she teased, letting out a muffled laugh dripping with mockery. “Look at me, Fab

Vincenzo looked at her, his chest tightening. Tears streamed silently down her pale cheeks. Her expression was devastating. Every glance and restrained breath revealed how guilt was tearing her apart.“It was an accident, Vittoria,” Vincenzo said, his voice firm but low as he shifted his gaze back to the road ahead.“How many, Vincenzo?” Vittoria pressed, her words heavy, demanding the answer she dreaded.“Three,” Vincenzo answered, almost in a whisper, his fingers tightening around the steering wheel until his knuckles whitened under the strain. The cry that burst from Vittoria’s lips was loud and raw, laden with pain. Her sobs filled the car, her chest heaving unevenly as the reality hit her like a blow that stole her breath. Her crying began to shift into something more erratic, her sobs growing shorter, the air catching in her throat. She tried to take a deep breath, but the sound that came out was a faint, sharp wheeze, betraying her struggle to draw in oxygen. Her chest began to
