Chapter 1

Alaric noticed I hadn't touched the wine he had poured for me himself. He gently cupped my cheek, his thumb stroking my skin.

"My sweet, what is it? Are you not feeling well?"

Looking at the deep affection in his eyes, I felt a sharp, stabbing pain in my chest.

One moment he was trading crass stories with his men about other woman's body, and the next he could so easily slip into the role of a perfect, devoted husband.

I wanted to see just how far he would take this charade.

"It's nothing. I was just curious, what were you all talking about just now?"

Alaric casually grazed my jaw with his knuckles, his low chuckle laced with indulgence.

"We were discussing how to deal with a traitor from a lesser clan. I didn’t want to trouble you with such matters, so we switched to the Old Tongue."

He had been a prince for too long, perhaps. Or it had simply been too long since he had given my own abilities any thought.

He had forgotten that my family had intermarried with various vampire clans for generations. I had been hearing those ancient languages since I was in my cradle.

The air in the hall, thick with smoke and the cloying, metallic sweetness of blood wine, was suffocating. I pulled myself from his embrace.

"You stay with our guests. I'm going to get some air."

Before Alaric could stop me, I walked straight toward the castle terrace.

Along the way, the ladies of the clans cast envious glances at me.

"Look at our princess, the only woman who can keep the Prince in her thrall. He throws such a lavish celebration for her every year."

"Indeed. Who wouldn't be envious of the Matriarch of Clan Morvath?"

In the past, words like these would have kept me awake all night, giddy with the belief that I had won the unwavering love of a prince desired by all.

Now, every word was like a blade twisting in my heart.

No one knew that the same Alaric who held me up on a pedestal in public was playing such a filthy game behind my back.

Yesterday, I had gone to his private baths, planning a surprise for our anniversary.

It was the Prince's forbidden sanctuary, a place of healing where even I rarely set foot.

But this time, I found a single strand of hair on the edge of the massive pool. It was not mine.

Blazing red curls. In all the Kindred, only Elise had hair like that.

The moment I walked out of that bathroom, I knew it was over between Alaric and me.

Suddenly, the phone in my pocket vibrated. It was my father. I retreated to the far end of the terrace and answered.

"Seraphina, everything is ready for you." My father's voice was as steady as ever.

"But I am curious," he added. "The Prince's devotion to you is known to the whole world. Why would he deny you a child?"

Years ago, to marry Alaric, I made a bet with my family: I had five years to conceive a vampire heir to prove his true love, or I would have to return home.

"No, Father," I said softly, my fingers brushing against the pregnancy crystal in my pocket. "I am already pregnant. But I still lost the bet."

My father seemed to understand and did not press further.

The thought of home hit me hard. My hand gripping the phone tightened until my knuckles turned white.

I hadn’t allowed myself to think of my family’s estate as ‘home’ in a long time, not since the day I had defied him and insisted on marrying Alaric.

I once believed Alaric was my only anchor in this world, my only true home.

But now, he had shattered that home himself.

I took a deep breath, lowering my voice.

"Father, please activate our old pact with the witch clans. Use their most ancient magic to erase me completely from the world of the Kindred."

"My scent, my bloodline, my contract sigil. Erase everything."

The line was silent for a few seconds, and when my father spoke again, his tone was uncharacteristically grave.

"Are you sure about this, Seraphina? Once it's done, the name Seraphina Morrell will cease to exist in all Kindred records and senses. That Prince of yours won't be able to find you. He'll go mad."

"The first time you saw him, you..."

I looked down at the heavy night fog below and gave a bitter smile. "He won't, Father. He doesn't need me anymore."

My eyes began to sting. For five years, I had abandoned my family's legacy, my only purpose was to be kept in this castle like a doll.

I had given him my all, only to be left with the ruins of my life.

My father was silent for a long moment before he sighed.

"In three days, I will bring you home. Until then, settle your affairs."

A wave of relief finally washed over me.

Once the witches' pact was activated, I would no longer have to rack my brain for a "dignified" way to escape my position as the Prince's wife.

"Alright. I'll sever all ties first."

Just as the words left my mouth, a low, familiar voice sounded from behind me.

"Darling, what did you just say you were severing?"

The elevator doors slid shut on his desperate gaze.I did not turn back. I did not answer.Because belated affection is as worthless as petals crushed underfoot. For someone who had personally pushed his lover and his own child into the abyss, all the "what ifs" in the world no longer held any weight. In the moment the golden doors closed, I caught a glimpse of his reflection in the polished surface as he collapsed to the marble floor. The prince who had once looked down upon the Kindred for centuries was now just a hollow shell. The elevator ascended smoothly.I closed my eyes and brushed my fingers over my collarbone. It was bare. There was no blood-amber to transmit anyone's voice ever again.By the time I returned to the top floor of my family's corporate headquarters, it was dawn.Outside the floor-to-ceiling windows, the first golden-red rays of sunlight were pouring over the edge of the clouds, blanketing the city I had looked up to since I was a child. On either side of the lon

The summit chairman seated Alaric at the head table and introduced the newly emerged "business tycoon" to the entire room.Only then did I learn that the vampire prince had forcibly liquidated centuries of his clan's hidden assets to cobble together a massive commercial empire. All for the right to stand at this pinnacle of human commerce, to earn a seat across the table from me.I forced myself to remain composed, my face a mask of calm as I stared at the big screen."Mr. Alaric's conglomerate has brought us the largest cross-border merger in history."The hall erupted in thunderous applause. Every business titan was celebrating this incredible influx of capital."His entry will reshape the future of the global economic landscape.""We hope all our honored guests will grace us with their presence at the private reception tonight."At eight o'clock that evening, as the host, I had no choice but to attend the reception.Alaric stood in the center of the banquet hall, dressed in a custom

Elise never imagined he would cast aside all affection so completely. Her pleas for mercy grew more shrill. But Alaric didn't even spare her a glance. After punishing the pureblood fraud who had dared to toy with his clan, Alaric once again poured all his energy into finding me.But whether he deployed his secret network in the human world or activated the entire Kindred underground, he could find no trace of me.Even vampires embedded in the highest echelons of human power found no record of my entry or exit anywhere. It was as if I had simply evaporated from the face of the earth."This is impossible!" Alaric slammed his fist on the table, shattering a crystal goblet."How can a living person just vanish into thin air?"Then, Alaric remembered my seemingly casual question on our anniversary night, and the vow he had made in his prince's blood: if he ever betrayed me, may he search for an eternity and never find me.He never imagined the vow would become a self-fulfilling curse, the c

Seeing the taunting message, Alaric instantly understood everything. He realized Seraphina had known the truth all along, and Elise's images had been the final straw.A towering rage, hot as an inferno, erupted from his chest. As for me, on the other side of the mountains, my only regret was not being there to see what happened next. The story I later pieced together was that Alaric, like a maddened beast, had kicked down the door of the hidden villa where Elise was staying. When Elise opened the door and saw him, her face was full of surprise and delight. She naively believed the Prince had finally cast me, a lowly human, aside. She was lost in the delusion that she would be crowned the clan's princess."Your Highness, are you here to bring me to the old castle? I'll pack my things and go with you right away.""I knew it. I knew you could never bear to let me and the pureblood heir remain outcasts."Before the words had even left her mouth, Alaric's hand shot out and clamped around he

Watching Alaric's retreating figure, Elise felt a surge of irrepressible glee. She leaned against a castle window, slowly twirling a lock of her red hair around her finger. It seemed her provocative messages from the past few days had worked. That foolish human had finally been dethroned as the Prince's wife. She had waited for this day for five long years. From this night on, Alaric's heart, and the title of princess, would be hers. She fought to keep the corners of her mouth from turning up, feigning concern as she spoke to her handmaiden. "Let's go back and wait for news."But in her heart, she hoped more than anything that Alaric would never find that woman. As he ran, Alaric frantically reached for the blood pact deep in his soul, but there was no response. The soul's resonance that had once bound them so tightly was completely severed. The rain grew heavier, but he paid it no mind. After trying and failing hundreds of times with his tracking spells, he finally gave up and telepor

I tried to tear that look we shared from my memory, the one that had cut through the rain. But this token, forged by Alaric himself from his own blood, had long since been bound to my bloodline. For five years I had worn it, and I had come to see it as the symbol of our deepest connection. Now, it was a searing brand against my collarbone, echoing with his hoarse, broken pleas to me.I reached up and covered the pendant, the heat scorching my fingertips."Isolde," I said softly. The old witch in the passenger seat turned. A single glance at the blood-amber was all it took for her to understand. She extended a wizened hand, and a wisp of silver-blue mist coalesced in her palm. The mist coiled around the blood-amber, dissolving the blood seal inch by inch. The blood-amber throbbed violently against my collarbone, the pain so intense it brought tears to my eyes."Endure it, child," Isolde murmured. "He never asked if you wanted it when he put it on you."After a moment, with a soft 'snap,
