Chapter 4

Author: Fresh Snack
I went back to our new home to pack my things.

Zane returned soon after, and this time, he was furious. "Sarah, what the hell are you doing? I already told you that you don't understand anything about hiking, so what gives you the right to judge?

"Samantha is such a sweet-tempered girl, and you actually made her cry! Are you happy now?"

I set down the clothes I'd just folded and stood to face him. "If you think she's so sweet and you like her that much, then we can get divorced. She can have you."

Zane's anger caught in his throat.

The veins in his forehead throbbed before he spun around and kicked the suitcase. "Why have you become so unreasonable?

"You know damn well that hiking is my only hobby. My job puts me under so much pressure, and hiking is how I cope with it. Are you seriously going to take even that away from me?"

I stared at the suitcase he'd knocked over. The wedding dress and reception dress I'd carefully packed spilled across the floor again.

There had been so much to take care of for the wedding. He was always busy with work, so I'd had to handle everything myself.

Suddenly, exhaustion washed over me.

I sank to the floor beside the suitcase and said weakly, "Whatever. You sleep in a tent with another woman and hold her naked in your arms, yet I'm not even allowed to ask questions.

"Now you're planning to spend our honeymoon with her too, sleeping in the same tent and looking at the mountains together. What else am I supposed to say?

"Zane, I think we should just call it quits. This marriage isn't worth it anymore."

The moment Zane heard that, his anger flared even hotter.

He kicked the suitcase again, and in his agitation, his dress shoe came down squarely on the white wedding gown that had spilled onto the floor.

Yet he kept shouting at me, "Why are you making such a mess of things right after we got married?

"Your legs aren't strong enough to go hiking with me. What, am I supposed to stay home and suffocate with you?"

I looked at the black mark his shoe had left on my wedding dress. Then I smiled. "Zane, do you really have the nerve to say that?"

His pupils trembled. He knew he'd said the wrong thing.

I hadn't always been like this. Years ago, there had been an accident at his family's factory. One of the sheds collapsed after an explosion, and no one was willing to risk another collapse to rescue him.

I carried his unconscious body out with my bare hands.

He survived, but a piece of falling rebar pierced my lower leg. From then on, I could never do strenuous exercise again. Whenever the weather turned cold or rainy, my leg would ache.

At that, all the anger drained from Zane. He sank down beside me, his voice softening. "I'm sorry, babe. I was angry, and I didn't think before I spoke.

"But can't you try to be more understanding? If I didn't have hiking, I don't know how else I'd relieve all this pressure from work.

"You know how much I make now. I earn over 1,000,000 dollars a year, and the pressure is so much greater than it used to be. I do all of this for our life together..."

As he spoke, he pulled me back into his arms.

My heart softened for a moment, and the tears I'd held back for so long threatened to spill.

I clutched the fabric over his chest and swallowed the ache in my throat. "Then let's both compromise.

"I won't hold the past against you. Buy the tickets to Caldera Bay right now. No hiking with them on our honeymoon. Okay?"

We didn't manage to get the divorce agreement signed this time. But it didn't matter. Michael began preparing the paperwork for a lawsuit, and I was in no hurry. The world was vast, and there were still so many places I wanted to see.I wanted to capture its beauty through my lens.Zane watched my vlogs.Every time I posted something new, he'd send me a message. He'd comment on how beautiful the world looked through my camera or tell me I looked even prettier than before. His messages were always full of flattering words, but I never replied to a single one. He didn't seem to mind, though.Zane also often shared his latest hiking trips with me."I go hiking by myself now. I'm not part of any hiking circles anymore, and I don't join hiking groups."Sometimes, I'll hire a local guide. I record everything with my camera too. I want to capture all the beautiful places you can't visit and bring those sights back to you."He even made a flag and wrote a declaration of love for me a

After spending so long away from the small towns of Elaris, I finally began my journey home.Stepping onto familiar soil again felt like returning from an entirely different life. Seeing familiar faces gave me the same strange feeling.Zane stared at me for a long time before finally forcing a bitter smile. "Sarah, you're just as beautiful as you were the first time I met you."I glanced at my reflection in the glass doors.I'd been doing pretty well lately. I didn't have anything to worry about anymore, and it showed. My face had a healthy glow that hadn't been there when I was always cooped up at home, worn-out and disheveled.I gave him a polite smile. "Thank you. But you don't look like you've been doing very well."His eyes were bloodshot, and his hair was slightly disheveled. His features were still handsome, but his cheeks had hollowed out, and he'd clearly lost a lot of weight. His clothes were no longer neatly pressed, and the clean, fresh scent I'd always associated wi

Sarah's POVI saw the news that Samantha's identity had been exposed online.I'd just gotten out of a hot-air balloon in Tavira.Because of my old leg injury, I couldn't do anything too strenuous, which ruled out hiking in high-altitude regions. But I could still visit regular tourist attractions and check places off my list.Honestly, getting out and clearing my head felt pretty good. Being cooped up at home every day really could mess with your emotions. When your entire life revolved around one person, and every bit of happiness, anger, sadness, and joy depended on them, how could you not go crazy? Especially when they never gave you anything in return. While I was in Tavira, I happened to meet a handsome biracial man. He kept winking at me, clearly hoping something might happen between us.In broken English, he greeted me, "Beautiful, you're very pretty. Can I get to know you?"I smiled and politely turned him down. "No. I take relationships pretty seriously. I'm not intere

After blocking Samantha, Zane posted in the hiking group.Zane: [I'm leaving the group for a while.]He handed the admin role directly to another veteran hiker.People kept tagging him in the group, while others messaged him privately to ask why. He didn't reply to a single one. Eventually, he grew so fed up with the questions that he left the group altogether. Other times, he contacted Sarah's relatives and friends to ask if they knew where she was. But no one had any idea where she'd gone. Zane began asking everyone he knew for news of Sarah. But there was still no word from her. It was as if she'd vanished off the face of the earth. She had even quit her stable nine-to-five job, leaving her coworkers baffled."Our company is so stable. The pay isn't great, but she gets off work early. She could still make it home every day to cook for you. Who knows what she was thinking."Zane drove home. As he waited at a red light, the answer suddenly came to him.Sarah had once had dreams of her own. When they'd first met, she'd been a photographer who constantly traveled for different shoots. After injuring her leg, she'd taken that stable job and devoted herself to being the perfect homemaker, spending all her time taking care of him.Even his love of hiking had started because of her.Back then, Sarah had wanted to photograph the northern lights. He'd followed her all the way to Northvale, and beneath the dazzling aurora, Zane had confessed his love."Sarah, I'll take yo

That day, Zane received a call from the bridal shop."Mr. Hayes, we'd still like to discuss compensation for the wedding dress with you."When he arrived at the bridal shop, he saw the wedding dress he'd stepped on and stained. It was the same dress he'd picked out with Sarah.Back then, he'd wanted to give her a grand, unforgettable wedding, and he'd fallen in love with the dress at first sight. "Babe, this one. You'll look beautiful in it."The bridal shop attendant had told them it was from a celebrity designer brand, one of the most expensive wedding dress labels in the country. A custom-made gown would cost 28,000 dollars.Zane had been more than willing to pay for it. He had the money. But Sarah had been horrified by the price. "I'm only going to wear it once, and you want to spend 28,000 dollars? That's more than two years of my salary."He'd only laughed, slipped an arm around her as she stood in the wedding dress, and leaned down to kiss her. "Silly. Your husband makes
