LOGINI froze. Divorce? The word echoed inside my head again and again.
"No," I whispered.
"It's better this way."
"For who?"
"For everyone." He chipped.
Everyone. Did he really believe that?
"I won't do it."
"You don't have a choice." He continued.
Anger rushed through me. "You don't get to destroy my life and then decide what happens next."
"I've already spoken to Richard.”
My heart skipped. "My... father?"
"Yes, he understands,” He replied immediately.
I felt sick. "What do you mean?"
"He knows this marriage is over."
"No..."
"He agreed we should settle this peacefully."
I couldn't believe what I was hearing. Richard hadn't even called me. He hadn't asked if I was alright. He had already taken Jason's side.
Jason spoke again. "Come to the Reid house tonight."
"Why?"
"Everyone will be there."
A cold feeling settled in my stomach. Everyone. Richard. Victoria. Lila. Jason. They were all going to sit together and discuss my marriage... without me.
"I'll be there," I finally said quietly.
"Good." Then he ended the call.
I lowered the phone slowly. For the first time that day, I wasn't crying. I was angry. Very angry. If they wanted me at the Reid house…then they would see me. They thought I would beg. They thought I would fall to my knees and fight for a man who had already thrown me away. They were wrong.
I looked at the time. Almost four in the afternoon. I hadn't eaten anything. I walked into a small coffee shop nearby. The sweet smell of fresh bread and coffee welcomed me. A young waitress smiled. "Good afternoon, ma'am."
I forced a small smile. "Can I have a cup of tea, please?"
"And something to eat?" She added
I wanted to say no. But my empty stomach answered before I could.
"Just... a sandwich." I replied.
She nodded. "I'll bring it right away."
I found a quiet table by the window. My phone buzzed again. Naomi. This time, I answered immediately.
"Please tell me you're okay. if I ever see Jason, I'll pour hot coffee on his expensive suit."
Despite everything, I laughed a little. "You would actually do it."
"You know I would."
The waitress placed my tea and sandwich on the table. "Enjoy your meal."
"Thank you."
Naomi spoke again. "Have you eaten today?"
"I'm about to."
"Good."
I stared at the sandwich. Suddenly, I had no appetite. "Naomi..."
"Uhh?"
"He asked for a divorce."
She went quiet. "What?"
"He said everyone will be at the Reid house tonight."
"I don't like the sound of that."
"Neither do I."
"Do you want me to come with you?”
I thought about it. Richard hated when outsiders got involved in family matters. If Naomi came, he would only make a bigger scene.
"No."
"But Aria…"
"I'll be okay."
"Call me the second it's over."
"I promise."
After we ended the call, I forced myself to eat a few bites. Everything tasted dry. An hour later, I paid the bill and walked outside. The weather had changed. Dark clouds covered the sky. A cold wind brushed against my face. Within seconds, rain began to fall.
"Oh no." I looked around. There wasn't a single taxi in sight. The rain became heavier. People rushed into nearby stores. I hugged myself and started walking. My shoes splashed through puddles.
Just then, a black Rolls-Royce stopped. The back window slowly rolled down. For just a second, I met the cold gray eyes of a man I had never seen before. His face showed no emotion. He looked at my soaked clothes before speaking. "Get in".
I blinked. "I'm sorry?"
"I said, get in." His voice was deep. Firm. Like someone who was used to giving orders.
I took a step back. "I don't know you, no, and I don't get into strangers' cars."
For the first time, something close to amusement flashed across his face. "That's smart."
He glanced at the man sitting in the driver's seat. "James." He called.
The driver immediately stepped out holding a large black umbrella. He walked toward me politely. "Good afternoon, miss." I looked between the two men.
James smiled kindly. "My boss isn't trying to scare you. He has a funny way of showing it." A tiny smile appeared on James’ face. "My boss isn't good with people." The man inside the car looked away as if he hadn't heard that.
"I noticed," I muttered.
James held the umbrella over my head. "Please allow us to drop you wherever you're going."
I hesitated. Every lesson my mother had ever taught me screamed at me to refuse. But another look at the heavy rain made me think twice.
"I'm only going to the Reid mansion."
The man inside the car finally looked back at me. "The Reid mansion?"
"Yes."
He stared at me for a second longer. Then he said quietly, "Get in."
This time, I did.
The inside of the car smelled clean. Leather. Fresh wood. Very expensive. I sat as far from him as possible. He opened his laptop without looking at me. I looked out the window. After a few minutes, he finally spoke. "You're Ariana Reid."
I turned sharply. "How do you know my name?"
"I know many people."
"That's not an answer." I replied.
He closed the laptop. "No, it isn't."
I frowned. "And you are?"
He looked at me. "Alexander Steele."
The name sounded familiar. Very familiar. Then I remembered. The newspapers. Business magazines. The youngest billionaire CEO in the country. The man who turned Steele Group into one of the biggest companies in just a few years. People called him cold. Untouchable. Impossible to please. I suddenly felt nervous.
"I saw you leave the hotel." He said.
"I wasn't trying to watch you," he continued calmly. "My meeting ended at the same time."
I looked away, embarrassed. "You must think I'm pathetic."
"I don't." His answer came so quickly that I looked back at him. "I think you're hurting."
His other hand took mine. For a second, I forgot the steps completely. His touch was steady and careful. I looked up at him.“You actually know how to dance.”“I know enough.”That made me smile. We moved with the music. At first, I was concentrating too hard on my feet. Then I relaxed. His hand remained at the small of my back as he guided me through the steps. The warmth of his palm through the fabric of my dress made me unexpectedly aware of how close we were.I looked at his face. He looked completely calm. Of course he did. Meanwhile, my heart was beating faster simply because I was standing there with him while everyone around us laughed and danced. The song changed. The people around us clapped along. I laughed when Alexander moved me through another step. “You really can dance.”He looked down at me. “I told you I knew enough.”“I did not believe you.”“That was your mistake.”I laughed. For a few minutes, everything felt strangely peaceful. No pressure, no pretending. No pai
I was still standing near the doorway when Alexander picked up his keys. “I said it's dinner and people from the company, it's actually much more than that. You can come anyways,” he said.I blinked. “Really?”“We are leaving in ten minutes.”I smiled before I could stop myself. “Where are we going then?”“An exhibition.”That caught my attention. “An art exhibition?”He nodded once. I had expected another evening surrounded by investors, executives, and people who spoke about companies as if they were discussing chess pieces. An art exhibition was the last thing I expected Alexander to mention.Ten minutes later, I followed him out of Steele Villa and into the cool New York evening. The city was alive around us. Cars moved along the streets, yellow taxis slipped between traffic, and lights filled the buildings on either side of the road. New York always seemed to be moving, even when nobody appeared to be in a hurry.I had already seen some beautiful parts of the city since arriving,
The next morning, I woke up earlier than usual. For a few seconds, I stared at the ceiling, remembering the previous night.I had spent almost an entire evening deliberately flirting with Alexander. And the man had barely reacted.I smiled. That should have annoyed me.Instead, it made me want to try again. There was something almost amusing about how difficult he was.I got out of bed, showered, and dressed before heading downstairs. Alexander was already at the dining table. Of course. He was dressed in a dark suit, his hair neatly styled, and a cup of coffee sat beside him.He looked as cold and serious as ever. I pulled out the chair opposite him. “Good morning, Lex.”His eyes lifted from his phone. “Good morning.”I smiled. No reaction, there again.I picked up a piece of toast. “You're getting used to it.”“To what?”“To always being the usual Lex.”“No.”I laughed. “You could at least pretend.”“Why would I?”I shook my head. “You really are impossible.”He returned his attenti
Aria's POV I stood in front of the mirror, adjusting one of the earrings in my ear. I looked at myself for a moment before a small smile appeared on my lips. There was nothing wrong with being a little bolder. I had spent enough time being careful around Alexander. He was my husband on paper. That was all. Our marriage had been built on an agreement, and Alexander had made it clear from the beginning that he expected nothing beyond what was written in that contract. He was cold, distant, and almost impossible to read.Fine. I could work with that. I was not trying to make him fall in love with me. I simply needed to make myself more comfortable around him and, perhaps, make him a little more willing to indulge me when I needed something.Besides, there was no denying that the man was incredibly handsome. It was almost irritating. He was too handsome not to fall for even at pretence.I picked up my phone and walked out of my room. Alexander was in the living room. He sat on the sofa
Lila stepped out of Blackwell with a smile still fixed on her face. She kept it there until the glass doors closed behind her. Then the smile disappeared. Her heels struck the pavement as she walked toward the car, her face tight with anger. She had planned everything. She had chosen the dress carefully that morning. She had called three of her friends and brought them along because she wanted witnesses. She had already imagined Aria's expression when she walked into Blackwell and acted as though she had come there only to talk. She had even prepared the tears. She would tell Aria that she had never wanted to hurt her. She would say that Jason had chosen her because they were in love. She would make herself look like the innocent sister who had been unfairly hated. Then, when Aria reacted badly, everyone would see who the real problem was. But Aria had not been there. Lila opened the car door sharply and got inside. One of her friends followed her. “What happened to you?” she asked.
Lila’s POVI had been thinking about Aria all morning. Ever since I saw her at Blackwell, I could not stop thinking about how easily she had walked away from us. She had looked different, not broken, not desperate. Not like the woman who had left Reid House with one suitcase. That bothered me more than I wanted to admit. Jason had tried to act like he did not care, but I had noticed the way he watched her.He still cared. I knew it. And I hated that. By noon, I had already made up my mind. I was going back to Blackwell. This time, I was not going alone.I called three of my friends and invited them to lunch. They were the kind of girls who loved expensive restaurants, designer clothes, and any story that gave them something interesting to talk about.I knew exactly what I was doing. If Aria was still working at Blackwell, I would make sure she regretted the way she had spoken to me. I would not shout at her. I did not need to. I knew how to make people look foolish without raising my
