Evelyn’s POV

I woke up earlier than usual today.

The sky outside was still grey, and the house was silent. But my heart wouldn’t let me rest.

every year. Not because anyone reminded me, but because how could I forget the day I

became a mother? Today was special — Liam’s birthday. I had marked the day in my mind the same way I did

I didn’t need an alarm clock. My love for him had always been louder than anything else.

I stepped out of my room quietly, still in my robe. The floor felt cold, but I didn’t care. All I could

think of was how much Liam used to love it when I sang him awake on his birthdays — when he

was smaller, before he learned how to hate me.

I walked to his room with a soft smile, holding onto a thread of hope that maybe, just maybe,

today he would remember that I’m still his mother.

The door creaked open and I peeked inside.

He was curled under the blankets, his small frame rising and falling gently. The sight of him

sleeping always did something to me — a mixture of pride and pain. My baby. My little boy. The

one I carried inside me for nine months. The one I gave everything for.

Softly, I began to sing.

Happy birthday to you… Happy birthday to you… Happy birthday, dear Liam… Happy

birthday to you…

He stirred, his eyes slowly opening. At first, his face wrinkled in confusion, and then… a small

frown.

But then — he smiled. Just a little.

“Thank you,” he mumbled, rubbing his eyes.

Tears rushed to my eyes immediately, but I forced them back. That tiny smile felt like sunlight in

the middle of a cold storm. I stepped forward and opened my arms.

“Come here,” I whispered.

He hesitated, like he was unsure. But eventually, he leaned forward and allowed me to hug him.

I held him like he was still five years old. Like the world hadn’t yet taught him how to push me

away.

“May you live long, Liam,” I said softly against his ear. “May your heart always find peace. And

may you never forget how much I love you.”

He didn’t reply. He didn’t hug me back. But he didn’t push me away either. And that… that was

enough for me this morning.

But then — his phone rang.

I pulled away slowly, and he picked it up from his bedside table. I turned to leave, but something

inside me made me glance at the screen.

Ivy.

The name burned like fire.

Before I could even speak, Liam looked up at me with those eyes that no longer looked like

mine.

“Can you excuse me, Mum?” he said. “I need to take this.”

Mum.

I should’ve felt grateful he called me that. But the way he said it — like it didn’t belong to me

anymore — made my chest tighten.

I nodded, quickly turning away before he could see the tears in my eyes. I walked out of the

room quietly, closing the door behind me.

And then… I broke.

Back in my room, I let the tears fall. I sat on the edge of my bed, staring at the floor, my hands

shaking. She called him before I could even make his breakfast.

She had already taken over everything. His mornings. His laughter. His heart.

And still, I was the one who was left. The one who remembered. The one who loved — even if it

hurt.

I came out of my room later that morning. My face was clean, and I had used the last bit of

strength that I had left in me.

Jason was already in his work clothes. Liam was beside him at the table, eating his breakfast

silently.

"I'm not going to work today," I said softly.

Jason furrowed an eyebrow. "Why?"

I hesitated, then smiled gently at Liam. "It's Liam's birthday. I want to cook today. For him.

Something special. Maybe we can have a small dinner when he returns from school. Just the

two of us. No guests. Just… family."

Liam said nothing. He kept eating

Jason let out a deep sigh and checked his phone once more. "Don't make a scene about it,

Evelyn. He doesn't need that."

"I won't," I replied quickly, trying to smile. "I just want to cook him his favorite dinner."

Jason didn't say anything.

Before I knew it, they were leaving. Liam walked by me in silence. Jason followed suit, hardly

glancing in my direction.

The front door closed behind them. The house fell silent again.

And I stood there in the hall — still holding onto hope. Still holding onto love.

Because that is what mothers do.

Even when no one is watching… we stick around.

Even when they don't love us back… we love even stronger.

Even when we are invisible… we remember every little thing.

Because no one can replace me in his story.

Even if… they already have.

Evelyn’s POVThe morning air was quiet, but my heart wasn’t.I barely slept through the night. My pillow was soaked with silent tears, and my eyes were sore. Ihad made up my mind. Evelyn’s POVMy head throbbed. Everything was spinning. I groaned softly and tried to sit up.My eyes opened slowly, and confusion hit me like a wave.Where… am I?This wasn’t my room. The sheets were silk, smooth beneath my skin. The air smelledexpensive—like cologne, leather, and something else I couldn’t place. I looked down.I was wrapped in a white towel. Nothing else.Panic exploded in my chest. I clutched the towel tighter and looked around the unfamiliarhotel-like room. Then, I saw him.A man.He was standing across the room, buttoning his shirt, completely calm—as if nothing waswrong. He looked rich. His black shirt clung to his chest, his wristwatch sparkled under the light, and his face… he was so handsome it hurt. Sharp jaw. Cold eyes. Lips that held no kindness.“What—what happened?” I asked, my voice shaking. He didn’t answer.I grabbed the nearest thing—a pillow—and held it to my chest. “What happened last night?!”He glanced at me once, then continued fixing his cuf

Like the silence is screaming all the thingsyou’re not allowed to say.I stood by the doorframe, watching my son, Liam, frown as he sat on the edge of the bed.His socks were halfway on. His school bag leaned against the wall. His uniform was a littlewrinkled. My knees hurt these days, but I didn’t care. “Liam,” Isaid again, my voice soft, “Would you like me to make your favorite lunch today? I could bring itto school at break time.
