Chapter 7

Author: Perfect Timing
After a brief recovery, Tristan returned to work. He hadn't been there a week before he called me in a panic.

"Sandra, where the hell are you? I'm in deep trouble. Get down here with money and bail me out!"

I was already standing outside his office building, watching as the police led him away in handcuffs.

The Gaffor family's reckoning had begun, and with it, the education and career he had stolen from me were finally returning to their rightful owner.

He had been caught embezzling company funds and was arrested on the spot.

[Tristan had to pay back every single cent before the company agreed to let him go.]

By the time I reached the police station, he was being released, his shoulders slumped, his face a mask of shock.

"How… how did this happen?" he muttered, dazed. His phone clattered to the floor. The screen lit up with an official notice from his university: his degree had been revoked due to academic fraud.

Sophia's condition deteriorated rapidly. The doctors' preliminary diagnosis pointed to stomach cancer, pending a biopsy for confirmation. In her hospital room, she clutched my hand and whimpered, "Sandra, you think I'll be alright, don't you?" As she spoke, she slid her bangle onto my wrist.I looked at her with perfect sincerity. "Of course, Mom. You'll be just fine."A day later, the results confirmed it: stomach cancer. Sophia muttered under her breath, "How can this be? I took her luck... it should have been enough.""What was that, Mom?" I asked innocently. Her eyes darted to the bangle on my wrist, and she scrutinized me. "You've been wearing it, haven't you? You didn't take it off?"I placed a hand over my heart. "I swear. I've worn it every moment, just like you said—even in the shower.""But then... what went wrong?" she fretted. I did my best to soothe her. "Please, don't upset yourself. The doctors say stomach cancer has one of the highest survival rates. There's

When I walked in, Kylie and her son were lounging on the sofa, laughing with Tina. Sophia was quick with an explanation. "This is Tristan's cousin from back home. She's just visiting with her son."The "cousin" was leaning against Tristan, his hand resting casually on her thigh. I pretended not to notice, but Tristan called out to me. He pulled a cheap hair tie from his pocket and tossed it onto the floor in front of me."Make sure dinner is good tonight. Consider this your reward."I didn't bend to pick it up. Instead, Tristan's son, Nathan, scrambled for it and threw it at me, giggling, "Big fat pig! You're a big fat pig!"Tina smirked. "You know, Sandra, you really should lose some weight. Tristan might trade you in if you don't."Kylie pulled her son close, feigning a scold. "Haven't I taught you not to point out people's flaws? Even if it's true, it's not polite to say it to their face. Understand?"Sophia beamed. "It's fine. Sandra has a good temper. She doesn't mind Nathan

[Looks like Roger Ackhart is about to break every bone in Tristan's body!][Tristan's definitely planning to hand the heroine some cursed object, hoping she'll absorb the misfortune for him.]Seeing I hadn't replied, Tristan’s voice grew shrill with panic."Honey, come to the hotel, now! I have a surprise for you! I swear, I've got something amazing to give you. I'm not lying!"I held the phone away from my ear. "What? I can't hear you! The director is calling for me. I have to go!"I hung up.But of course, I still went to the Corealis Grand Hotel. Watching Tristan's world implode was a spectacle I wouldn't miss for anything.By the time I arrived, the barrage had already narrated the entire scene.Unable to wait for me, Tristan had fallen to his knees, begging Roger for mercy. In a final, pathetic act, he had even licked Roger's shoes, babbling apologies.Roger's lover had laughed at the pitiful display. In the end, Roger showed "mercy"—he only shattered both of Tristan's l

Tristan didn't come home that night. He used to make excuses, but now, knowing I had only a month to live, he couldn't even be bothered to pretend. The next morning, Sophia brought me a bowl of stew. "Sandra, you should eat. Your stomach was so upset yesterday. You need to rest."I didn't take them. Instead, I guided her to sit on the sofa beside me."Mom, there's something I need to talk to you about."You know I grew up in the orphanage. Yesterday, the director called me. She's getting on in years, and she fell and broke her leg. She's spent her whole life caring for other people's children, and with no family of her own, she's completely alone. I feel I should go and take care of her for a while."A flicker of irritation crossed Sophia's face. "Sandra, you're my daughter-in-law. Tristan is out working all day—your place is here, taking care of this household."I took her hand, my expression open and sincere. "Mom, let me be honest with you. The director told me she has no hei

The next evening, Tristan stormed into the house, fury crackling around him. He ripped at his tie, and when he saw my trembling wrist, the anger in his eyes peaked. He seized my arm. "Where is it? The bracelet I gave you—where is it?"I feigned ignorance and shrugged. "It fell into the toilet last night by accident."His face flushed crimson. "It fell in, and you didn't bother to fish it out?""It was a cheap trinket from a dollar store," I snapped. "Why are you making such a big deal out of it?""You know you cost me my promotion!" he snarled.Feigning bafflement, I asked, "What are you talking about? You mean if I lose a bracelet, you lose your promotion?""You—" Tristan began, but George cut him off with a sharp clearing of his throat."Enough. If it's lost, we'll buy another. Don't make a scene," he said. Tristan finally fell silent, though his body was still rigid with anger.I went to the kitchen to serve dinner, catching Tristan's sullen glare from the corner of my eye.
