Chapter 7

Autor: Thai Ginger
“Grandpa... it hurts so much...”

Victor’s eyes reddened, and even his voice began to shake.

“I’m here. I’m here, sweetheart. Don’t be scared.”

He looked up and barked at the butler beside him,

“Call the doctors! Get the entire Zimmerman family medical team here right now! Move!”

The butler bolted out of the room so fast he nearly tripped over himself.

Then Victor turned to Paul and Angela, his gaze so cold it was as if he were looking at strangers.

I leaned on my cane and slowly made my way toward Lily, limping with every step.As I got closer, her eyes suddenly turned red.“I—I’m sorry,” she said softly, her voice trembling with tears. “I never should’ve treated you like that.”I didn’t say anything.“These past three months overseas, I was all alone. No friends. No family. And that’s when I realized how hard it really is to live with no one beside you.”Tears slid down Lily’s face as she spoke.“I used to think you stole my life. But now I understand... none of this was your fault.“You didn’t have a choice any more than I did.“You were just a baby when you were adopted. You didn’t even have the right to say no.“And I took all my anger out on you. I hit you. I pushed you down the stairs. I almost got you killed...”Before she could finish, she dropped into a crouch and broke down crying.“I’m sorry. I really am so sorry...”I watched her cry, my feelings tangled beyond words. This girl had been taken by traffickers eighteen y

But the way they had stood by and done nothing that day really had chilled me to the bone.Grandpa seemed to see the hesitation in my eyes, and he let out a soft sigh.“My little lucky star, you don’t need to rush to forgive them. What they did that day was inexcusable. Focus on healing. Don’t worry about them.”Then he turned and waved dismissively at Dad and Mom.“Out. Don’t stand around here getting in the way.”They looked almost relieved as they hurried from the room.Silence settled over the suite.Grandpa sat beside my bed, still holding my hand, and suddenly his eyes turned red again.“My little lucky star... I almost lost you.”I looked at his graying hair and the deep lines at the corners of his eyes, and something inside me ached.“Grandpa, I’m okay. My leg was broken, that’s all. Once the bone heals, I’ll be fine.”“Okay?” Grandpa's voice caught. “Do you have any idea how close you came to dying? The doctor said the back of your head hit the marble floor, and if it had land

She turned and stormed out, slamming the door behind her.Paul and Angela instinctively moved to go after her, but one look from Victor pinned them where they stood.“If either of you dares follow her,” he said coldly, “you can get out of this house tomorrow too.”Paul and Angela exchanged a glance, but in the end, neither of them moved. They were in no position to protect anyone now—not even Lily. The doctors arrived.By the time they lifted me onto the stretcher, my consciousness was already fading, but I still clung tightly to Grandpa’s hand.“Grandpa... don’t go...”Grandpa held my hand as tears streamed down his face.“I’m not going anywhere. Grandpa’s right here with you.”As I was wheeled into the operating room, I vaguely heard Grandpa making calls outside.“Pass along my orders. Effective immediately, every subsidiary under Zimmerman Group is to cut off all cooperation with the Lindsay family.“Also, transfer every asset under my name into my little lucky star’s name at once.

Victor let out a cold laugh.“You think I give a damn about saving face?”He looked at Lily and said, one word at a time,“I’m giving you two choices. First, you turn yourself in and confess to intentional assault. Whatever sentence the court gives you, you accept it.“Second”—his voice dropped even colder—“I have Zimmerman Group’s legal team personally see to it that you’re prosecuted. Criminal charges, civil damages, the works. I guarantee you will rot in prison forever.”The color drained completely from Lily’s face. She hadn’t expected the old man to be this ruthless.“I don’t believe you,” she said through clenched teeth. “I’m your real granddaughter. You wouldn’t do this to me.”“You think I’m bluffing?” Victor looked toward the butler. “Wilson, call legal and tell them to—”“Wait!”Angela lunged forward, sobbing as she threw her arms around Victor's legs.“Dad, please! Please spare her this once! Lily just came home. She’s young, she doesn’t understand what she’s doing. She’s ou

Did my words mean absolutely nothing to you?”Paul’s face looked bloodless. His lips shook as he tried to speak.“Dad, I—I was...”“You were?” Victor cut him off sharply. “You stood there and watched that lunatic hit her? Watched her drag Charlotte downstairs? Watched all of it and did nothing?”With a thud, Paul dropped to his knees.“Dad, I was wrong. I know I was wrong...”Angela fell to her knees too,

“An outsider?” Victor looked at her coldly. “Do you have any idea who this family owes its fortune to?”“I do,” Lily shot back through clenched teeth. “I saw all the garbage people were posting online. Lucky-star reincarnation, crying and the stock drops—it’s all ridiculous superstition. Every one of you has been fooled by this fake.”“Superstition?” Victor let out a humorless laugh. “Then let me tell you something. The year I adopted Charlotte, I had barely enough money in my pocket to buy a piece of bread.”“In ten years, Zimmerman Group went from nothing to a trillion-dollar empire. Now tell me, what do you call that? Luck?”“That was your ability,” Lily said stubbornly, chin lifted.“My ability?” Victor sneered. “I spent half my life failing in business. I stayed poor for forty years. So why was it that the moment I adopted her, everything changed?“Why did everything go smoothly for eighteen years? Why does the stock drop whenever she cries? Why did the company lose billions in ma
