Chapter One: Shattered

I sat in the waiting room of the Silver Ridge Pack clinic, hands resting on my eight-month pregnant belly.

Fluorescent lights buzzed overhead. A poster on the wall showed a happy she-wolf holding a newborn pup under a full moon.

Today was supposed to be routine, the final big ultrasound before the birth. Every appointment before this had ended the same way: "Everything looks perfect, Luna Ava."

My phone vibrated on the vinyl seat next to me.

Rowan: Don't wait for me anymore. Something came up. Take care of yourself.

Seven words. No apology. No real explanation beyond "something." No heart emoji he used to add to every message during our first two years together. I stared at the screen until my vision blurred.

Rowan Thorne. Alpha of Silver Ridge. My husband. My fated mate.

Three years ago, he carried me over the threshold of our house, whispering promises of forever while moonlight spilled across the floor. He left the city behind with me, traded skyscrapers for forest trails. For a while, the fairy tale felt real.

Then Clara Voss came back.

Clara was his first love, the Beta’s only daughter who had disappeared five years ago without explanation. She returned years later, looking thin and pale, claiming she had only one year to live. And ever since then, everything changed.

Rowan had been all over her.

Pack meetings were cut short if Clara needed tea. Dinners were canceled if she felt a headache coming. I spent nights alone in our too-large bed while he sat at her bedside.

I understood compassion. I really did. Who wouldn’t want to ease someone’s final days?

But one year stretched into two.

The “final days” never came.

And my husband drifted further away with every passing month.

"Luna Ava?" The nurse's gentle voice pulled me back.

I pushed myself up slowly, one hand under my belly, the other on the armrest and followed her down the hallway. Dr. Harlan greeted me with his usual warm smile. He was one of the few pack members who still looked at me with genuine kindness instead of thinly veiled pity.

Routine checks first: blood pressure, weight, fundal height. Then the ultrasound.

I lay back, cold gel on my skin, and watched the monitor. There it was, the rapid, strong heartbeat I had grown addicted to hearing. Tiny fists opening and closing. Legs kicking like a swimmer doing laps.

Dr. Harlan's face changed.

"Luna Ava," he said quietly, "one of the maternal serum markers is abnormal. It's very rare in werewolf pregnancies, especially with a human mother carrying an Alpha heir, but it could indicate developmental concerns for the pup."

My smile froze. "What kind of concerns?"

"We don't know yet. We'll need an amniocentesis and possibly genetic sequencing. But if the results are severe..." He paused, choosing his words carefully. "The Alpha will need to be involved in the decision, whether to continue the pregnancy. Medically, it would be safer for you and the pack if—"

"No." The word escaped before I could stop it. "The baby has been perfect on every scan. I feel stronger than ever since I got pregnant, this has to be a mistake."

"I hope so too," he said softly. "When will the Alpha arrive? He really should hear this."

A bitter laugh bubbled up. "He's not coming today."

Dr. Harlan didn't press. He printed the report, folded it carefully, and placed it in my hands like it was fragile glass. "Rest. Come back in three days for the next test. And please... try not to carry this alone."

I walked out of the clinic in a fog, report clutched against my chest. The autumn air smelled of damp leaves and coming rain. I needed to find Rowan. I needed him to look me in the eye and promise we would face whatever this was together.

And then, because the Moon Goddess apparently had a cruel sense of humor, I saw him across the street, moving slowly down the sidewalk. One arm wrapped around Clara's waist as she leaned into his side.

Her laughter floated over the quiet afternoon.

They hadn't noticed me yet.

Clara spotted me first. Her smile widened, bright and brittle. "Ava! You're already finished? I'm so sorry we couldn't come with you. Rowan got held up helping me with... you know." She touched her temple delicately.

Rowan's gaze flicked to me, then slid away almost immediately. "How did it go?"

"Fine," I lied. I couldn't say it here not in the middle of the street with her perfume still clinging to his shirt.

Clara squeezed his arm. "Oh, and Ava, you have to come to my birthday dinner tonight! Please? It would mean everything to me."

Before I could reply, Rowan spoke first. "You should come. It'll be good for you to get out."

Clara's eyes instantly shimmered with tears. "If you don't want to, I understand. I know it's hard seeing Rowan with me so much... especially after last month when he stayed over. Nothing happened, I promise. He just held me while I cried."

Last month, he had told me it was late-night border patrol.

Rowan pulled me a few steps away, voice low. "Don't make a scene, Ava. She's fragile. Just say you'll come. Stress could trigger another episode."

I wanted to scream. I wanted to shove the report into his chest and demand to know when our child became less important than Clara's tears.

But the street was full of pack members now. So I smiled, brittle and thin, and said I would try.

They led me to the car. I sat in the back seat like an afterthought while Rowan and Clara reminisced about childhood runs through the forest, first shifts under the same moon, jokes I would never understand.

  • The Luna Awakening: Rejected and Reborn   Chapter 2: Enough

I didn’t stay long at Clara’s birthday party. The music pulsed too loudly against my temples, the laughter felt sharpened like claws, and every time someone glanced my way, their eyes slid off again, as though looking too long at the pregnant human Luna might stain them.Rowan noticed me swaying near the dessert table, cheeks flushed from the heat and the ache in my lower back, and quietly arranged for the driver to take me home.“You look tired,” he said, not unkindly, but without meeting my eyes for more than a second. “Get some rest.”I was tired.Tired of watching an entire room treat Clara like she was spun from moonlight and glass, while they stepped over me without breaking stride. The car ride back was silent except for the low hum of the engine and the occasional crackle of the driver’s radio. When we pulled up to the house, the big cedar-and-stone place Rowan and I had walked through together three summers ago, pointing at empty rooms and dreaming aloud about cribs and tiny

  • The Luna Awakening: Rejected and Reborn   Chapter 7: The Airport

The airport terminal blurred into streaks of fluorescent light and hurried strangers as I pushed through the glass doors. My heels clicked against the polished floor—sharp, deliberate, the only sound louder than my heartbeat. Each step felt like ripping off a bandage that had fused to skin over five years.Behind me, Rowan’s voice had fractured into something raw. “Ava, wait—please.” It wasn’t a command anymore. Not like the night he’d ordered me dragged to the border, the pack’s eyes averted, my belly already rounding with the life we’d made. Back then his word was law. Now it was just a plea, thin against the roar in my ears.I didn’t turn. I couldn’t. If I saw Ivy’s face again—those wide hazel eyes that were his mirror, the same stubborn curl to her lip I’d kissed a thousand times in secret—I’d shatter. And I’d promised myself, the day I clawed my way out of that ravine with blood in my mouth and nothing but rage to keep me moving, that I would never break for him again. The taxi

  • The Luna Awakening: Rejected and Reborn   Chapter 6: Five Years Later

I stood in the bright operating room of Crestwood Pack Hospital, gloved hands steady as I guided the final moments of a difficult breech delivery. The pup emerged with a strong, indignant wail. The new mother laughed through exhausted tears as the nurses wrapped the tiny wolf-shifter in a warm blanket and placed him against her chest.I stepped back, peeled off my gloves, and let the team take over. For just a moment I watched the newborn’s scrunched face, the way his tiny fingers flexed. My chest ached the way it always did sharp, familiar, never quite healed.Five years.Five years since that night on the forest road.I had woken two days later in a strange infirmary bed, bandages tight around my abdomen, IV line in my arm. Alpha Kai of Crestwood Pack had found the wrecked car during a routine border sweep. He carried me himself to his healers. There was no baby.Only blood, torn clothing, and an empty infant car seat they discovered half-hidden under brush nearby. No body. No sce

  • The Luna Awakening: Rejected and Reborn   Chapter Five: Where Is Rowan?

"I'll call someone to get you.""No, Rowan, please—" I grabbed the phone tighter, my voice breaking. "I'm hurt. I really need to see a doctor. Please don't—"The line went dead."Rowan?"Tears streamed down my face as I called him again. And again. Every call went straight to voicemail. How could he do this to me?I curled up on the narrow bed, crying. I banged on the door, begging the guards outside to help me. The contractions kept coming, each one worse than the last, but no one answered. The pain was too much. I didn't think I would survive this. Maybe Rowan was right. Maybe I really was just a weak human. My eyes felt heavy. I collapsed onto the cold floor, blood pooling between my thighs.Everything went dark.I felt movement. Someone was carrying me.I forced my eyes open and realized I was in a car. A car? Had Rowan finally come for me? I knew he wouldn't abandon me.I lifted my head slightly and saw I was lying across the backseat. When I looked toward the front, my stomach d

Clara made a sound and clung tighter to Rowan. Her face went pale. She swayed on her feet like she might fall over. One hand pressed against her forehead."I feel dizzy," she whispered. "It's too much. I need to get out of here."Rowan's jaw tightened. He stared at the divorce papers like he wanted to rip them apart. Then he looked up at me."We'll talk about the baby later," he said coldly. "Schedule the procedure and tell me the date."My blood ran cold."No," I said. "I'm not doing it."Rowan stepped forward and grabbed my upper arm. Not hard enough to bruise. But hard enough to remind me who he was. And who I was to him."Are you really sure about divorcing me huh?" he asked. "I know how much you love me. So don't think you can play pranks with me."I tried to pull away. My hands pushed against his chest."Let go of me," I said. My voice shook. "You're hurting me."I pushed harder. "Rowan, let go. Please."He released me.Tears streamed down my face. I didn't want to cry here but

  • The Luna Awakening: Rejected and Reborn   Chapter 3: Just Let Me Go

The gathering in the living room lasted until late afternoon.Everyone was there.Former Alpha Thorne and Luna Elena sat at the front like they owned the place. The Beta couple sat close by, laughing with the others. Pack members filled the chairs and sofas, holding cups and plates like it was a celebration. The room smelled like cedar smoke from the fireplace and roasted meat from the kitchen. They laughed like nothing was wrong.Like I wasn’t eight months pregnant.Like I wasn’t standing there, trying to breathe through the tightness in my chest. When someone needed iced tea, they called my name. When someone needed a plate cleared, they looked at me.That was all I was good for. A servant.A background piece in my own home.Elena made sure I felt it.She glanced at me and smiled without warmth. “Your roses are dying again, Ava. A Luna should know how to care for her garden. It’s symbolic.”I forced a polite smile. “I’ve been busy.”Elena’s lips tightened. “Of course. The human cond
