Chapter 17

Leonora was surprised when Dante asked about Darlyn. She wondered why he didn't know where her daughter was. However, she decided not to dwell on it and instead focused on their plans for the library. She called for her housemaids to bring them snacks and led Dante to the room. Once they were settled in, Leonora asked Dante what was on his mind.

"Leonora," he said, pulling away from her. "We need to talk."

The smile faded from her face, and she looked at him with concern. "Is everything okay, Dante?"

He took a deep breath, trying to steady his nerves. "No, it's not. I need to tell you something, and I don't know how to say it."

Leonora's expression grew serious. "Whatever it is, Dante, you can tell me."

Dante took a deep breath and gathered his courage. He looked at Leonora and said, "I'm sorry. But I don't think I can marry your daughter."

Leonora's eyes widened in shock, but she didn't seem angry. "What do you mean, Dante? You can't just break off the engagement like that."
