Chapter 3

作者: Rosemary
When we walked in, I saw Nora sitting in the corner. She was holding her slightly swollen belly, looking unwell. A few women from the Pack sat around her. One gave her water. Another asked how she was feeling.

When she saw Theron, she lowered her head and spoke softly. “Theron, I am sorry to bother you again. I should not have come. But the baby…”

“Do not say that,” Theron said. He let go of my hand and walked toward her. “How can you be alone?”

He took the cup from her and poured her some warm water. The women around them murmured among themselves. They said Nora had been through so much. They said this child was the last blood of the brother. They said Theron was a good man for stepping up.

No one looked at me.

I stood at the door, like a person who did not belong here.

Nora never looked up at me. She did not need to. She just had to sit there, holding her belly, saying the word baby, and everyone would take her side.

I turned and went to the restroom. I splashed cold water on my face. I was about to leave when Nora walked in. The weakness was gone from her face. All of it had been put away like a mask hung on a hook. In their place was something cold and sharp.

“Did you see that?” she said, looking at me. “This child is already the acknowledged heir of the Pack. You are a human. What do you have to compete with me?”

“So what if Theron chose you as his future Luna? He marked me, Elara. Not you. My child is already the rightful heir of this Pack. Your child will never be anything.”

She stepped closer, her voice dropping to a whisper.

“Do you know why? Because you are human. Any child you have with Theron would be a half blood. Not a purebred wolf. The Pack would never accept him. No inheritance. No status. Nothing. Your bloodline ends with you.”

“How long do you think you can stay by his side? Ten years? Twenty? He does not kick you out now because he feels bad for you. Because he remembers that he used to love you, a little, once. But that memory is fading. And when it is gone, you will not even have the right to stand here.”

“Do yourself a favor. Leave. Leave while you still can. While leaving is still your choice.”

I did not say anything. Then she suddenly fell to the floor. Her voice became sharp and high pitched. “Elara, what are you doing? I am carrying a child!”

“Nora!” The door burst open. Theron rushed in.

He shoved me aside and bent down to help Nora up. I lost my balance and hit my back against the sink. The pain made my face go white.

“Theron, do not blame her.” Nora leaned against his chest, her eyes red, her whole body trembling. “I said something wrong. I should not have come here. I just wanted her to understand that the child needs a father. She got angry. It is my fault.”

“I did not touch her,” I said.

Theron looked up at me. His eyes were full of disappointment.

“Elara, Nora is carrying my brother’s child. That child is the only thing he left behind. Why can you not try to understand?”

“I did not touch her,” I said again.

“Then tell me why she is on the floor?”

I looked at Theron. He stood beside Nora, one hand supporting her back, the other holding her wrist.

“I understand,” I said. “The baby is more important. Take her to the hospital first.”

I watched through the window as Theron help Nora into the car. He opened the door for her. He buckled her seatbelt. He did it the way you do for someone you have chosen to protect. I stood in the parking lot and watched them drive away.

Not once did he look back. Not once.

I walked out of the restroom, took out my phone, and changed my flight to an earlier departure.

On the way to the airport, my phone buzzed. It was a message from Theron.

“Elara, Nora got scared. Let me handle things here first. I will come find you. Do not do anything rash.”

I took the SIM card out of my phone and threw it into a trash can by the road.

The boarding announcement came over the speakers. I picked up my bag and walked toward the plane.

Theron. Goodbye forever.

That night, snow started falling at the station.I stood by the window, looking out at the white. My phone lit up. A message from Theron.“Elara, I came today to take you home. I thought if I just said I was sorry, you would forgive me. You always forgave me before. You waited for me for two years. I thought you would wait forever. I am sorry. I hope you are happy.”I looked at it for a long time. I did not reply. The days after were quiet. Theron did not come back. Nora did not show up either. The lab work entered its final stage. Lysander and I spent more and more time together.I could not say when our relationship changed from colleagues to something else. Maybe it was when he blocked the wind for me. Maybe it was when he remembered what I could not eat. Maybe it was when he left warm milk on my desk every time I worked late.He proposed on an ordinary night. We had just left the lab. Snow was falling heavily, covering the whole station in white. Lysander parked the car on the side

When spring came, the project started to wrap up. Lysander and I worked well together. We grew used to each other. I could not say when it started, but I noticed myself looking for him in a crowd. I noticed myself smiling at things he said. One afternoon, I finished at the lab and walked toward the cafeteria. I saw someone at the gate.Theron. He stood outside the research station in a dark coat, wrinkled from travel. His face was thin. Dark circles hung under his eyes. I did not know how long he had been standing there. I did not know how he found this place. When he saw me, his eyes lit up. “Elara.”He walked toward me quickly but stopped a few steps away. He looked at me. His lips moved, like he wanted to say something but did not know where to start.“How did you find this place?” I asked.“I searched for a long time,” he said. “You would not answer my calls. You would not reply to my messages. No one would tell me where you were. I had to look everywhere.”I did not say anything.

Theron stood outside the door. His fingers slowly curled into a fist. There it was again. The performance. The tears on command. The trembling voice. He had seen it a hundred times before. How had he never noticed how perfectly timed it all was?He pushed the door open. Nora sat on a chair by the window, her phone still pressed to her ear. When she saw him, the smugness on her face turned to panic. She hung up quickly and stood up. Her voice changed in an instant, soft and sweet again.“Theron… when did you come back?”“What did you say?” He looked at her. “Say it again.”Her eyes reddened immediately. She lowered her head, one hand on her belly, her voice trembling.“I did not mean it. I am just… I am so tired. I am carrying this child alone. I am scared every day. Scared you will leave. Scared the child will have no one. I was just talking. Do not take it seriously.”“Theron, you know me. I am not like her. I do not have her freedom. I only have this child. I said things I should not

It was late at night when Theron returned from the hospital.Nora was fine. The healer said she had gotten too emotional and needed rest. She had held his hand on the bed, her eyes red. “Theron, do not leave. I am scared alone.”He waited until she fell asleep before leaving. Walking out of the hospital, the night wind crept into his collar. He thought of Elara’s calm eyes when she said, “I understand you.” For no reason, his chest tightened. He drove fast. He wanted to go home. He wanted to tell Elara that Nora’s situation was handled. Starting tomorrow, they could talk about the ceremony. The car stopped in front of the house. He pushed the door open. The whole house was quiet as an empty shell. He took out his phone and called her. No answer. He called again. Still no answer. He sent messages. One, two, three. All disappeared into silence. He stood in the living room, the phone pressed to his ear, listening to nothing. The silence pressed back. He had thought Elara truly understood.

  • The Luna He Made Wait Until She Chose to Leave   Chapter 2

For the first time, I realized how much I had wasted on this man in two years. Two years of being with him. Six months of waiting and watching him put Nora first. First it was the news of her pregnancy. Then it was her unstable condition. Then it was her checkups, her sleepless nights, her every complaint about the baby. There was always a reason. I was always the one who had to understand.I took a shower and let the hot water run over my face so I could not tell if the wetness was water or tears. When I got out, the apartment was silent. The food Theron had cooked was still sitting on the table, cold and untouched. I scraped it into the trash and opened my phone to order something I could eat. That was when I saw the post from Nora.It was a photo of her lying in a hospital bed. Her face was pale, almost gray against the white pillow. One hand rested on her slightly swollen belly. The caption said, “Please let the baby be safe.”Dozens of comments had already piled up. “Take care of
