It wasn’t until Cassy spotted a bird, frozen in mid-air, over Alpha Jason’s shoulder that she realised her new bloodline ability had activated again. Immediate heat flushed to her cheeks — another aspect not affected by her slowing down time... Delightful. She had thought they were sharing a moment, but she couldn’t tell when the ability had kicked it. It had felt like an endless moment of intrigue to her, but what if the power had activated immediately? Had he been staring at her too, feeling the same, or had she frozen him in simple moment of eye contact?
Cassy had no way of knowing, and even if she did, what would it matter? Anyone would feel something after being rescued, right? Zac was still the mate she wanted.
With a bit of trial and error, and a touch of willpower, time moved on again. Immediately, she looked away from her Alpha, knowing she’d gone beet-red, though she hoped he chalked it up to adrenaline from the fall. Thankfully, the pain returned to her hands with unapologetic force, stealing her attention in one fresh blow of heat and aches.
“Your plan?” She spoke through gritted teeth.
‘Oh, yes, right.’ Alpha Jason released his claws, allowing his wolf to carefully slide down the mountain side until he was beneath her where he stopped again. ‘I need you to let go.’
“What?”
‘I’ll catch you. Trust me.’
Cassy chewed her lip, but what option did she have? Her hands were already going blue and numb, and he was her Alpha, wasn’t it natural to trust him? She couldn’t deny that she was confident he would catch her and get her to safety, but she was still letting go of her grip on the mountain, risking another plunge down it’s depths if he didn’t.
Before she could second guess herself, she released her fingers. The immediate relief of no longer clinging to the branch was quickly swapped by cramping pain and sharp burns. She hissed and cradled her hands to her chest, but they were frozen in a cupped position, any move to close them sending renewed fire up her arms.
She only fell for a heartbeat before soft black fur and a strong body caught her.
‘I’ve got... Cassandra, your hands...’ Alpha Jason murmured, eyes fixed to them before he shook his head and focused. ‘I’m going to slide us to the mountain's base. Stay pressed against me, okay?’
Through a whimper, Cassy nodded. Alpha Jason moved, easing them down the rest of the mountain. She tucked against his body, only her feet and bum feeling the friction of rocks as they descended. She closed her eyes and trusted him to get her to safety.
Knowing she was safe should’ve been a blessing but without danger her adrenaline fizzled away, letting pain swarm in and remind her of every bump and cut the fall bestowed upon her. Her hands were the worse, swollen and stuck in a clawed shape as if they were still trying to hold onto the branch. She didn’t know what she looked like, but she was certain she was a mess.
‘So much for going to the opening ball later.’ She thought, bitterly thinking of Katie wearing a slutty dress and wrapping herself around Zac.
Nothing short of a long soak in the packhouse natural hot springs would help her unwind enough to dress up and go to the celebration, except maybe her mum’s healing ability, but she’d be tired from helping Emily.
Finally, they came to a stop.
Though she knew they were at the base of the mountain, Cassy didn’t move immediately. Small tremours worked over her body as if it only just realised how close she had been to dying. If it wasn’t for her bloodline ability and Alpha Jason, she probably would’ve. She curled in on herself, well as much as she could do with the groans and protests of her muscles. But in that moment, she liked feeling them. They were a rough reminder that she was alive.
The Alpha wolf beneath her didn’t move. His body stayed wrapped around her as if shielding her moment of weakness from the world. He tucked his head against her, closing her in on all sides, and pressing his nose to her hair. It was an instinct most wolves had — protect the pack, help with weak — but still, it was surprisingly... Gentle of the stone Alpha. Emotions running high, she found her own nose turning into his body as she nestled further into the black fur that comforted her and inhaled his scent. It was warming and surprisingly sweet, and made her wonder what his pheromones would be like.
“What the fuck, Jace, get off her.” Alex’s shout tore through Cassy’s peace, making her jerk and feel the pains of her body anew.
She didn’t know how long they had been curled together, but like a bucket of cold water over her head, she scrambled away from Alpha Jason, wincing as she got her legs under her. Before they could crumple, her friend was at her side, arm around her waist. She was naked, from freshly shifting, and angry, a fierce look on any woman but terrifying on Alex.
She pinned her brother with a glare. “The medical team are stuck at the packhouse with the other injured wolves; you were supposed to bring Cassy straight there. Not let her bleed out here.”
Despite never letting his sister talk to him that way, Alpha Jason stayed quiet. His eyes didn’t even glaze over with a private mindlink to his sibling. Alex huffed at the lack of response and lifted Cassy into her arms. That finally got the Alpha wolf moving as if to join them.
“I’m taking her to the doctor. I’m sure you have more important things to do.” She threw him a venomous glare. “Like, don’t you have your male High Guard to congratulate?”
Without waiting for an answer, Alex ran off to find the quickest path up the mountain. Cassy groaned at the movement but all her energy to cry or argue was gone. She wanted to tell her friend that the Alpha had been giving her a moment to recover, but the words failed her.
“It’s okay Cass, Zac’s bringing some help. You’ll be okay.”
Alex kept talking, maybe to keep her awake, or maybe to calm the racing heart under Cassy’s ear. Either way, Cassy believed her words and knew she was safe. Maybe there was something about the Briggs family that she connected to. Zac, Alex, and now Alpha Jason... Exhaustion closed in, saving her from the hour long run to medical help, letting her drift into peaceful sleep.
Cassy wished she got a chance to see Alex before the start of the ball, but only 30 minutes after her friend stormed off, a warrior mindlinked her to come to the packhouse hall. It was earlier than the planned start time of the ball, but she assumed the competitors of the trials were being gathered sooner for a speech or to ready themselves for the event. However, when she got to the grand doors, only nine other women waited there. Of course, Katie was among them, the bitch offering her a deadly smirk as Cassy limped closer. She begrudgingly admitted the woman looked stunning, but it was dampened by her arrogant smile and the way she pushed other women out of the way to stand near the doors.
“Your brother is an asshole.” “True, but why today?” Alex laid on her bed, already dressed for the ball, wearing a slick black bodycon dress that hugged every muscle she had carved through her training. “He just is.” Cassy grumbled under her breath. “He wants me to rat on Katie so he can disqualify her.” “Why don’t you?” She snorted. “Apparently, I already have a target on my back. I don’t need to draw it any bigger.” As she spoke, Cassy swapped the plastic medical gloves her mum had given her for silk elbow length gloves that matched her dress, her eyes flickering to Alex in the mirror to make sure her friend didn’t see how healed her hands were. She had been forcing herself to move slow and wince occasionally, so Alex didn’t notice any change, but the warrior would definitely have questions if the burns from the branches were completely gone from her palms. No amount of hot springs exposure would heal wounds like that in half a day. No, she’d have to keep her hands hidden for
Cassy groaned as she lowered herself into the hot springs. Every inch of her body hummed as the water rose around it, wrapping her in a deep warmth that made her muscles feel like jelly. Steam rose in lustrous waves from the water, filling the cave in a misty haze that lulled her to relax into the carved ledge seat, and enjoy the peace settling over her. It was far from the unease she had felt when she was first allowed to visit the baths. The natural cave was carved deep in the mountain’s belly, dark without torches and only reachable through a series of tunnels beneath the packhouse. The place was almost silent, with only the trickle of the streams to keep her company.&
When Cassy woke up again, she almost wished she hadn’t. Everything ached. Everything. So much so that not even the silken feather-like covers surrounding her did anything to lessen the pain. Though they did make her feel safe. She had stayed in Alex’s room enough times to recognise the luxury that came with the packhouse and was quickly surrounded by her friend’s comforting scent. It eased her from her sleep, but she abandoned the idea of sitting up when her whole body protested the movement. She was sure then that she hadn’t been out for long and her mother hadn’t treated her yet. Otherwise, she’d feel back to normal. “Try to stay still, will you?” Alex grunted from the chair beside her. “Or you’ll give me another heart attack.” “And here I thought you were too much of a warrior to have a heart.” Cassy smiles, but her voice was hoarse. “Shut up. Warriors have the biggest hearts.” Alex said, but there was no bite to the words. She leaned forward, offering Cassy a glass of water an

Cassy’s stomach dropped, everything slowing down around her as she tipped backwards. She couldn’t believe she had allowed Katie so close after seeing what she did to Emily, and now the bitch smirked with a triumph that made her blood boil. Cassy’s arms reached out, but no one was close enough to grab, no one even noticed she’d been pushed, the scream to warn them caught in shocked lungs. Only one wolf was turned towards her, his eyes widening with horror. She locked eyes with Alpha Jason just as she passed the point of recovery, where any semblance of balance or core muscles could’ve saved her. He reac
After handing a sobbing Emily to her mum, Cassy sprinted to collect a token. Something within her wanted to stay with the hurt wolf, but she didn’t have the time. She’d have to deal with visiting her after the race instead. The token was a small gold nugget pressed into a rough circle and printed with the number 35. It should’ve been a relief that only 34 others had collected their token so far, but Cassy knew most of the women were already running too far behind to complete the race in time. If she didn’t haul ass, she’d be one of them.Token in hand, she raced back to the rocky cliffside and st
No one moved, waiting for a more official start, some fanfare, something similar to the excitement and grandeur a Luna Trial would usually entail. Women looked to each other, uncertain if the Alpha truly started the competition to find his mate with a simple order to ‘go’ but their confusion didn’t last long.“I said, go.” Alpha Jason repeated with a growl that showed the women a brief glimpse into what their life as his Luna would be like.
They called the first trial an environment test, but it was an obvious cull designed to trim most of the participants down to the fittest wolves. That or they wanted to be rid of the women who had come from other packs. Either way, Cassy couldn’t help but wonder why they were attempting to chop the numbers so quickly. Alpha Jason said less than half would likely continue on after the trial, expediting the whole process. A Luna Trial would usually take at least a month, dragged out with parties and visits from other packs, but by the sounds of it, he wanted a Luna at his side within the week. Not that it really mattered to Cassy. The sooner she made the top ten and Zac chose her to be his mate, the sooner she could keep her head down and return to a life of obscurity. “Break a leg.” Alex grinned, as the group was herded out of the hall to the start line. “You shouldn’t say that when I probably will.” Cassy grumbled. “Oh, I didn’t mean your leg.” Cassy caught Alex’s nod towards
