Jetstar Clonstrong dropped his teacup when Damoew walked into his study.

The cup shattered on the floor. Tea spread across the expensive rug.

"You're dead," Jetstar whispered.

"Clearly not." Damoew closed the door behind him. Lyanna and Jasmina flanked him. "We need to talk. Now."

"This is impossible. I saw your body. We held the viewing." Jetstar stood, his hand moving toward the alarm bell on his desk.

"Touch that bell and fifty pack members die tonight," Lyanna said coldly.

Arlene pulled the soul blade from her thigh sheath. The obsidian gleamed red in the fading light. Runes carved into its surface pulsed with dark magic."I was going to wait," Arlene said, advancing on Jasmina. "Make this clean. Surgical. But you've ruined that plan."She moved fast. Faster than anyone expected. The blade aimed straight for Jasmina's stomach.Lyanna threw herself between them. The soul blade caught her across the ribs instead. She screamed. The blade cuts through flesh and something deeper. Something essential."Mother!" Damoew struggled to his feet.Arlene kicked Lyanna aside. The older woman hit the ground and didn't get up. Blood pooled beneath her."Soul blades cut spirit as well as body," Arlene said conversationally. "She'll die slowly. Painfully. Unless someone with healing magic saves her in the next few minutes.""You—" Jasmina started.Arlene lunged again. This time Cassian intercepted. His magic formed a shield, but the soul blade sliced through it like pape

Arlene stepped onto the platform like she owned it.White dress flowing. Hair perfect. Face arranged in careful grief. The gathered wolves watched in silence. Seventy of them, standing in positions that looked natural but were carefully planned."Thank you all for coming," Arlene began. Her voice carried across the evening air. "Today we honor Alpha Damoew Herstrong. A leader. A warrior. A mate."Jasmina stood at the platform's edge, hidden among the warriors. Her hand rested on her stomach."Damoew gave everything to this pack," Arlene continued. "His strength. His wisdom. His life."Lies. All lies.Damoew was twenty feet away, also hidden. Watching the woman who'd controlled him for years. The sun was low now. Orange and red bleeding across the sky."He died protecting what he loved," Arlene said. "Murdered by someone he trusted. Someone who carried his child and still chose betrayal."Murmurs rippled through the crowd. Those who didn't know the truth shifted uncomfortably."But his

Three hours until sunset.Jasmina watched as families quietly left the packhouse. Children carried by their parents. Elderly helped by younger wolves. All heading toward the Outcast Lands under Dax's escort."How many evacuated?" she asked Theo."Forty-three so far. Mostly non-combatants." Theo checked his list. "That leaves about seventy warriors and elders who'll stay.""Seventy against Arlene and whatever magic she's prepared." Jasmina touched her stomach. The baby had been restless all day. "Are those good odds?""They're the only odds we have."Across the platform, Meredith worked on the final sections of her counter-ritual. Silver symbols covered the entire structure now. Beautiful and deadly."Two more hours," Meredith called out. "I need two more hours to finish.""You have one hour and forty-five minutes until sunset," Cassian said. He was helping her, channeling magic to speed the process. "Can you finish in time?""I'll have to."Damoew appeared beside Jasmina. He'd been me

Arlene stood in her chambers, watching the mirror that tracked Cassian's location. She'd known he'd betrayed her the moment he broke Damoew's stasis spell. The tracking magic had alerted her instantly. But instead of anger, she felt satisfaction."Predictable," she murmured. They thought they were being clever. Sneaking back to the packhouse. Finding Hardy's body. Discovering the ritual circles.Let them find it all. She'd planned for this. Prepared for resistance. In fact, she was counting on it.The mirror showed Cassian standing near the memorial platform. Beside him, an old woman drew symbols in silver ash.Meredith Ashborn. The ancient witch who'd survived her mother's purge."A counter-ritual," Arlene said aloud. "How creative."She pulled out her mother's journal. Flipped to a marked page. Read the passage she'd memorized years ago.*"If the enemy prepares a counter-ritual, let them. It will consume their focus, their resources, their time. While they work to stop one plan, you

You're supposed to be...""Dead? Exiled? Pick your favorite lie." She moved forward. "But I'm very much alive. And we're here to stop a massacre.""What massacre? What are you talking about?"Damoew pulled out Jasmina's sketches. The ritual circles. The symbols of death and soul-trapping. He spread them across Jetstar's desk."Arlene Swinkstrong is actually Morgana Blackthorne. The Witch Queen's daughter. She's been planning genocide for sixteen years." Damoew's voice was steady. "

  • The Luna With Ruin   Chapter 17: The Discovery

Pre-dawn light filtered through the trees as they returned to the memorial platform.Jasmina carried parchment and charcoal. They needed to document the ritual circles. Proof that even Jetstar couldn't ignore.Cassian would return with Meredith in a few hours. Until then, they had to gather evidence."How do we make the symbols visible?" Theo asked."Magic." Damoew knelt beside the platform edge. His strength was coming back faster now. Whatever the death stasis had done, his body was fighting through it. "Cassian showed us how last night. I think I can replicate it.""You're not strong enough for magic yet," Lyanna warned."I'm strong enough to try."He placed both hands on the stone. His eyes closed. Concentration lined his face. For a moment, nothing happened. Then faint light began seeping through cracks in the stone. Red at first, then darker. Purple-black like old blood. The ritual circles appeared. Dozens of them. Overlapping patterns that covered the entire platform."Goddess,
