Chapter 12: First Night

“WELCOME back, son.”

I swallowed after hearing Suzanna’s affectionate greeting. No matter how many times I tell her to not wait for me each time I’d drop by, she never listens. It was past eleven in the midnight. The parade had caused a stir. I had to attend the organization’s emergency meeting before I got to drive home.

“I’m glad you will finally get to live here. I know it had been a tough day, but knowing you, I’m sure you did well. Congratulations on your wedding, Luther,” she said with a smile.

I’ve heard the same thing over and over again today. But Suzanna was the only one sincere about it.

If she was my real parent, maybe I wouldn’t be the man I am today. I wouldn’t have to spend my whole life treating my parents’ house like a warzone. I can’t complain, though. Being a Sinclair had its benefits, too. This marriage, for example.

When the cold wind blew, I fixed Suzanna’s shawl. “Thanks for waiting for me. It’s cold. Get inside.”
