Chapter 2

Author: Luna V
“You handle her for me today, and I’ll handle… you… tonight.”

Selene gave a fake, breathy gasp. “Kael! It’s the gathering at my parents’ den tonight. What if they hear?”

Kael’s chuckle was darkly intimate. “Let them. Let your sire hear how well his daughter’s Alpha provides. In every way.”

Their crude exchange churned my stomach. Kael told me he had to finalize a treaty with a coastal pack during the Howling Moon, that he’d be away.

I’d been planning my own journey north, so I didn’t question it. Now it was clear. He was playing the dutiful son-in-law for his new lover in her home pack.

If he no longer valued being the Chairman’s son-by-mating, I would grant his wish.

I sent a quick pulse through the pack link to my lawyer. Prepare the documents.

Selene smirked at me.

“My mate is coming.”

“You stay right there. I want you to watch. In these lands, every scrap of prey, every gleam of silver, belongs to my Kael.”

I’d almost forgotten. In five years, with my family’s influence and resources funneled through my silent hands, Kael had risen from a lone Beta to Alpha of the strongest pack in the territory.

To protect his pride, to honor my exile, I’d made myself invisible. A shadow. I never used my true name.

Kael would nuzzle my neck and whisper, “I love how humble you are, my Luna.”

Now, the territory I helped him build was this she-wolf’s playground. And the male who claimed to love humility had bred nothing but arrogance in another.

I wondered if they’d still be smiling when the truth tore their world apart.

My smile was calm. “I’m eagerly waiting.”

My composure infuriated her. Her hand shot out again.

I caught her wrist. My gaze turned glacial, the faintest hint of a dominant growl in my stillness. “I suggest you stay still. If you harm me, not even your precious Alpha will escape the consequences.”

My aura, usually locked down tight, pressed against her for a second. She flinched, uncertainty flashing in her eyes.

A red-haired she-wolf burst in, grabbed a water flask, and threw the contents in my face.

“You threaten the Alpha’s mate? I checked your file! You live in the Old Warrens, den three! What kind of status is that?”

“You even coming here is an insult! Trying to pretty yourself up to snag a better mate? Look at your worn-out pelt. You’re not fit to lick her boots.”

I sighed. Den Three in the Old Warrens was the first home Kael and I built together.

Small, simple, built by his own hands when we had nothing but each other.

We owned lavish dens now, but my heart never left that place. My official den location was still listed there.

Before I could speak, the attendant stammered, “Lady Elara, this… this is our new Head Attendant, Kora. She just arrived today.”

She then turned to Kora. “Head Attendant, Lady Elara is a Diamond-Claw patron. She spends more in a season than…”

Kora was already fetching a fresh drink for Selene. “A season’s spending? That’s less than our Selene’s daily allowance.”

“And you! Do you have rocks for brains? Can’t you tell a high-born from gutter-scrap?”

The attendant shrank back, silenced.

Kael stared at Torin, disbelief contorting his features. Then he let out a hollow, disbelieving laugh.“The Chairman’s family?”“Don’t joke. Elara was cast out five years ago. Her family doesn’t care if she lives or dies.”A cold smile touched my lips.“I forgot to mention. My brother mind-linked me recently. My father… misses me. He wants me home for the Moon-Gathering.”“This Dawn-Fang crystal was meant to be a gift for my mother.”Kael’s eyes widened. “Impossible.”I kept smiling. “Is it? Look closely at the flight manifest for the private jet. See the authorization code. It’s a Chairman’s seal.”“And my father had Torin make a special trip. He was going to sign over the Southridge hunting territories to your Pack.”“You’ve spent the last year courting that contract, haven’t you?”“Torin brought the documents. Pity. They’re not for you anymore.”“You can’t sign the territory contract. But you can sign the severance agreement. You might still make it to your new promised-mate’s paren

The two Patrol soldiers immediately moved to restrain him. “Alpha! Intending harm to a pregnant she-wolf is a severe offense!”Selene scrambled behind Kora, sobbing.I watched the spectacle, detached.Kora shoved her away. “Don’t touch me.”“I hate bond-breakers. We’re not friends.”The drama was relentless. I couldn’t help but laugh.“How righteous of you.”Kora nodded vigorously. “Lady Elara, if I’d known she was a shadow-mate, I never would have…”I cut her off. “Righteous as you are, you recall my ruined gown, yes? An innocent casualty.”“The latest custom piece from the Silver-Tail designers. Not too expensive. Ninety-eight thousand. Here’s the receipt.”“Will you be paying by chip or credit transfer?”Her voice was a whimper. “You’re so wealthy… why make me pay?”“I just took your side…”I smiled thinly. “I didn’t need you to.”“As you can see, loyalties are fickle. Credits are more reliable.”“Finish crying, then pay up, Kora.”Her pupils dilated. She let out a wail.“Selene! Yo

He pulled out his phone, pulling up a transaction record and thrusting it toward the Patrol.“Payment record. Six hundred thousand. See? Charged to my account.”“Go enjoy the Festival. Did you really think she had evidence?”I smiled. “Look closely. It’s a joint account, but the credits were debited from my card.”“The credits in that card were loaned to me by my brother. See the transfer note.”My brother, fearing I’d suffer, had sent me credits every month. Worried Kael would claim them, he always marked them as ‘loan’. I used to laugh at his caution. Now, it was the wisest thing he’d ever done. The Patrol soldier examined it carefully and nodded.“The diamond was indeed purchased with the she-wolf Elara’s funds.”Kael was defiant. “She has no funds! Even if it was a loan, who ends up repaying it? Me!”I shook my head. “No. You’re wrong. The one with nothing is you.”I calmly pulled out a document, pointing to a clause at the bottom. “It states: ‘Should Kael be found in breach of the

I dropped all pretense too. “Perfect. I don’t want the title ‘Mate of Alpha Kael’ either. I’ve already summoned a pack lawyer. We can discuss asset division.”Kael glared at me, furious.“I was trying to save your pride by saying the pack’s wealth was yours. Don’t take it seriously.”“We both know every single credit in this pack was earned by me.”“Let me remind you. Even if we dissolve the bond, you’ll get nothing.”“In fact, let’s be precise. You bought that diamond, but the money you spent was mine. So, technically, I bought that diamond.”“I can give my own property to anyone I choose.”“You have no right to dispose of it. This report is baseless. Withdrawing it is irrelevant.”I ignored him, looking down at my phone and coldly sending an extra instruction to my lawyer via mind-link.Seeing me quiet, he thought he had control again. He tried to take my hand.“Alright, I know you’re hurt. How about this? After the Festival, I’ll buy you a bigger one.”“Selene is carrying my pup. I

The door to the room swung open the next second.Kael’s voice cut through the tension. “Who dares to touch my mate?”“Do they not know who rules this territory?”Selene lifted her chin, proud as a preening bird. She flew to his side, clutching his arm and pointing straight at me.“It’s her!”Kael followed her accusing finger.I deliberately took my time, picking up the cup of tea and sipping it slowly. I raised my eyes to meet his gaze and pulled a faint smile onto my lips.“Husband,” I said, my voice light. “How many mates do you actually have?”Kael’s smile froze. A flicker of unease passed through his eyes. He recovered quickly, subtly peeling Selene’s hand from his arm.He walked right up to me.“Darling, don’t joke,” he said, his tone coaxing. “You know you’re my only mate.”I set the cup down and turned to the bewildered Patrol soldiers. “You heard him, officers. This is my mate. That diamond was bought by me and my mate. It’s now on her hand. Doesn’t that prove she stole it?”“V

The door to the salon opened.Kael walked in, his Alpha aura filling the space effortlessly. He went straight to Selene, pulling her close, nuzzling her temple. “Are you alright, my heart? What did this nuisance do to you?”He hadn’t even looked at me.Selene melted against him. “She’s been horrible! Accusing me, threatening me! And she got Torin exiled!”Kael’s gaze finally swept over me. It was cold, dismissive, utterly devoid of the history we shared. “Elara. Still causing trouble. Still jealous. I thought you had more grace than this.”The words were a silver blade to the gut.He turned to the patrol soldiers, his tone shifting to one of casual authority. “This is a misunderstanding. The gem was a gift from me to my promised mate. There are records. Let’s not waste pack resources on my former mate’s… delusions.”Former mate. The bond wasn’t formally severed, but his words made the intent clear. The patrol soldiers nodded, ready to defer to their Alpha.Selene leaned into Kael, her
