Chapter 3

Author: Luna V
Selene took a slow sip. “Good thinking, Kora, digging up her den location. I’ll remember this. I’ll have Kael promote you to Head of Services for the main pack grounds.”

Kora began massaging Selene’s shoulders, her demeanor utterly servile. “Thank you! This is all I’ve ever wanted. My best friend mates the Alpha and lifts me up!”

Selene snorted, looking at my drenched sweater. “And here I thought you might be someone. A Warrens ‘princess’. How quaint.”

“I haven’t seen such audacity in moons. Don’t worry. My mate owns several pack media outlets. After today, your face will be known to every wolf in the territory. They’ll all know you for the liar you are.”

I looked at the imported cashmere, now ruined. Irritated, I opened a mind link to Kael’s head aide, Torin.

Bring me a change of clothes from my den. And pull my purchase records from the Silkweaver Boutique last moon for the insurance claim.

The two females in front of me paused, exchanging a glance. Then I heard Torin’s cold reply in my mind.

I am attending the Alpha. I am not your servant.

The link cut off sharply.

I stood there, stunned. Then a bitter laugh escaped me.

The aide’s disrespect was a direct reflection of his Alpha’s.

Selene and Kora folded their arms, grinning.

“What’s wrong? Your little Omega driver-boy too busy for you?”

“You have to understand. A low-rank has to work. Can’t cuddle you and haul prey at the same time.”

“A sweater from the common market, and you call it high-tailored? Trying to scam us? Typical. Trash wears trash.”

“Real princesses get princess-sickness. What you have is mange.”

“Tell you what. The den’s busy, the cleansing rooms are filthy. Go clean them with your tongue, and maybe I’ll ask my mate to go easy on you.”

I pulled some cleansing cloths and dabbed at the sweater. Then I opened a direct, forceful Alpha-mate link to Kael. It was a channel I rarely used, reserved for pack emergencies.

“Three minutes. I want to see your aide, Torin, stripped of his rank and exiled in the next pack-wide alert.”

“The severance credit transfer is already sent to the pack vaults.”

I severed the link before he could respond.

One minute later, a pulse went through the general pack link. A brief, official notice: Torin, former Head Aide, removed from duty for conduct unbefitting the Alpha’s command.

Across from me, Selene was giggling at her comm-stone. “Oh wow! Kael just fired his head aide!”

“‘Conduct unbefitting’? Oh! I remember. He glanced at my legs when he dropped me off today.”

“My Alpha is so possessive, what am I going to do?”

Kora launched into fresh fawning. “It’s because you’re so radiant! Any male would want you all to himself.”

I couldn’t help the dry laugh that escaped me.

Feeling mocked, Selene’s face contorted with rage. She lunged at me again.

A voice, sharp with command and raw power, cracked through the room like a whip.

“ENOUGH!”

I turned.

Two pack patrol soldiers stood in the doorway, silver-tipped cuffs gleaming on their belts. Their postures were rigid, official.

“Who called for patrol intervention?”

I stepped forward. “I did.”

“This female is in possession of a stolen pack treasure. The Moon’s Tear. She wears it now.”

Selene smoothed her expensive fur-trimmed coat. “I am Selene. Mate to Alpha Kael of the Silvermane Pack.”

“Yes. The Alpha Kael.”

The patrol wolves glanced at each other, expressions carefully neutral.

“Ma’am. And the relevance to the stolen item is?”

Selene rolled her eyes. “With thinking like that, no wonder you’re still grunt soldiers.”

“My mate is the Alpha of this territory. Why would I need to steal anything?”

“Get this straight. The issue isn’t the diamond. I’m charging this creature with slander against an Alpha’s mate!”

The patrol wolves’ patience visibly thinned. “We’re here about a theft. File a separate claim for slander.”

“You claim you didn’t steal it. Do you have proof?”

Selene glared. “Of course I have proof. My mate is on his way.”

“Proof of purchase. Is that sufficient?”

The senior patrol soldier turned to me. “And you, claiming she stole it. Do you have proof?”

I offered a small smile. “I don’t.”

“But my mate does.”

The soldier looked confused. “Then you’ll need to have your… mate… brought here to provide it.”

Selene jabbed a finger at me. “Then call your low-rank mate! Hurry up! My Alpha’s time is worth more than you’ll ever see!”

My smile didn’t waver. “Don’t worry. The moment her mate arrives, mine will be here.”

“Not a second later.”

Selene looked at her comm-stone and sneered. “My Alpha is here. Where’s your nobody?”

Kael stared at Torin, disbelief contorting his features. Then he let out a hollow, disbelieving laugh.“The Chairman’s family?”“Don’t joke. Elara was cast out five years ago. Her family doesn’t care if she lives or dies.”A cold smile touched my lips.“I forgot to mention. My brother mind-linked me recently. My father… misses me. He wants me home for the Moon-Gathering.”“This Dawn-Fang crystal was meant to be a gift for my mother.”Kael’s eyes widened. “Impossible.”I kept smiling. “Is it? Look closely at the flight manifest for the private jet. See the authorization code. It’s a Chairman’s seal.”“And my father had Torin make a special trip. He was going to sign over the Southridge hunting territories to your Pack.”“You’ve spent the last year courting that contract, haven’t you?”“Torin brought the documents. Pity. They’re not for you anymore.”“You can’t sign the territory contract. But you can sign the severance agreement. You might still make it to your new promised-mate’s paren

The two Patrol soldiers immediately moved to restrain him. “Alpha! Intending harm to a pregnant she-wolf is a severe offense!”Selene scrambled behind Kora, sobbing.I watched the spectacle, detached.Kora shoved her away. “Don’t touch me.”“I hate bond-breakers. We’re not friends.”The drama was relentless. I couldn’t help but laugh.“How righteous of you.”Kora nodded vigorously. “Lady Elara, if I’d known she was a shadow-mate, I never would have…”I cut her off. “Righteous as you are, you recall my ruined gown, yes? An innocent casualty.”“The latest custom piece from the Silver-Tail designers. Not too expensive. Ninety-eight thousand. Here’s the receipt.”“Will you be paying by chip or credit transfer?”Her voice was a whimper. “You’re so wealthy… why make me pay?”“I just took your side…”I smiled thinly. “I didn’t need you to.”“As you can see, loyalties are fickle. Credits are more reliable.”“Finish crying, then pay up, Kora.”Her pupils dilated. She let out a wail.“Selene! Yo

He pulled out his phone, pulling up a transaction record and thrusting it toward the Patrol.“Payment record. Six hundred thousand. See? Charged to my account.”“Go enjoy the Festival. Did you really think she had evidence?”I smiled. “Look closely. It’s a joint account, but the credits were debited from my card.”“The credits in that card were loaned to me by my brother. See the transfer note.”My brother, fearing I’d suffer, had sent me credits every month. Worried Kael would claim them, he always marked them as ‘loan’. I used to laugh at his caution. Now, it was the wisest thing he’d ever done. The Patrol soldier examined it carefully and nodded.“The diamond was indeed purchased with the she-wolf Elara’s funds.”Kael was defiant. “She has no funds! Even if it was a loan, who ends up repaying it? Me!”I shook my head. “No. You’re wrong. The one with nothing is you.”I calmly pulled out a document, pointing to a clause at the bottom. “It states: ‘Should Kael be found in breach of the

I dropped all pretense too. “Perfect. I don’t want the title ‘Mate of Alpha Kael’ either. I’ve already summoned a pack lawyer. We can discuss asset division.”Kael glared at me, furious.“I was trying to save your pride by saying the pack’s wealth was yours. Don’t take it seriously.”“We both know every single credit in this pack was earned by me.”“Let me remind you. Even if we dissolve the bond, you’ll get nothing.”“In fact, let’s be precise. You bought that diamond, but the money you spent was mine. So, technically, I bought that diamond.”“I can give my own property to anyone I choose.”“You have no right to dispose of it. This report is baseless. Withdrawing it is irrelevant.”I ignored him, looking down at my phone and coldly sending an extra instruction to my lawyer via mind-link.Seeing me quiet, he thought he had control again. He tried to take my hand.“Alright, I know you’re hurt. How about this? After the Festival, I’ll buy you a bigger one.”“Selene is carrying my pup. I

The door to the room swung open the next second.Kael’s voice cut through the tension. “Who dares to touch my mate?”“Do they not know who rules this territory?”Selene lifted her chin, proud as a preening bird. She flew to his side, clutching his arm and pointing straight at me.“It’s her!”Kael followed her accusing finger.I deliberately took my time, picking up the cup of tea and sipping it slowly. I raised my eyes to meet his gaze and pulled a faint smile onto my lips.“Husband,” I said, my voice light. “How many mates do you actually have?”Kael’s smile froze. A flicker of unease passed through his eyes. He recovered quickly, subtly peeling Selene’s hand from his arm.He walked right up to me.“Darling, don’t joke,” he said, his tone coaxing. “You know you’re my only mate.”I set the cup down and turned to the bewildered Patrol soldiers. “You heard him, officers. This is my mate. That diamond was bought by me and my mate. It’s now on her hand. Doesn’t that prove she stole it?”“V

The door to the salon opened.Kael walked in, his Alpha aura filling the space effortlessly. He went straight to Selene, pulling her close, nuzzling her temple. “Are you alright, my heart? What did this nuisance do to you?”He hadn’t even looked at me.Selene melted against him. “She’s been horrible! Accusing me, threatening me! And she got Torin exiled!”Kael’s gaze finally swept over me. It was cold, dismissive, utterly devoid of the history we shared. “Elara. Still causing trouble. Still jealous. I thought you had more grace than this.”The words were a silver blade to the gut.He turned to the patrol soldiers, his tone shifting to one of casual authority. “This is a misunderstanding. The gem was a gift from me to my promised mate. There are records. Let’s not waste pack resources on my former mate’s… delusions.”Former mate. The bond wasn’t formally severed, but his words made the intent clear. The patrol soldiers nodded, ready to defer to their Alpha.Selene leaned into Kael, her
