Chapter 01. The most painful betrayal

Love is just a painful illusion.

Ruby Weston was walking to her mate’s office when she heard a disgusting noise coming from next door. Curiosity made Ruby change direction.

“You’re so good, my dear!” A male voice praised.

Her heart was about to burst when hearing this man speak. Her footsteps slowed. Bad thoughts immediately raged, but she tried to stay calm.

“Which is better, me or her?” The woman asked in a pampered voice.

“Of course you are.” The man replied. “You are more beautiful than her. I love your eyes, your nose, your lips, everything.”

The woman giggled as if she had won something.

“Then what about her? Isn’t she pretty too?”

Mocking laughter filled the air.

“She is fat. When I walk with her, I feel like I’m walking with a pig. And you say she’s beautiful?”

“Don’t say that.” The woman said in an artificially annoyed voice. In reality, she liked hearing him insult the girl.

“She is my sister.”

“You are too kind, my dear. That’s why I love you more every day.”

Ruby froze at the door. Her hands shook as she opened the door.

Two people in disgusting poses immediately stared at her.

Ruby couldn’t hold back the tears. The most painful betrayal made her chest tighten. Ruby hadn’t expected her own sister to be in a relationship with her mate.

“Ruby... I can explain all of this.” Rose got up from Levin’s lap. She approached Ruby with a concerned face.

“It’s not what you think. We were just joking...”

“You think I’m stupid?” Ruby’s voice trembled. She looked at Rose disappointedly.

“How can you be so mean to me?” Ruby snapped. She couldn’t accept it. “What have I done to you to make you do this?”

Ruby had always given in. She always shared what she had with her sister, even though Rose was only her stepsister, but she loved Rose as her own.

“How dare you take my mate!”

Why would Rose betray her so cruelly?

Ruby couldn’t believe it. They had always had a good relationship. Rose also knew Levin. She knew he was her sister’s mate. But Why?

“Listen to me, Ruby. Levin and I love each other,” Rose said boldly. There was no remorse in her words. “I know he’s your mate, but what can I do? We’re in love.”

“Stop it!” Ruby snapped. She didn’t want to hear Rose’s words anymore.

“You’ll never understand how we feel, Ruby. I forced Levin to be with you because I know you love him. But he doesn’t love you.”

Ruby slapped Rose hard across the face. “Cut the crap! I don’t want to hear another word out of your filthy mouth!”

“How dare you hurt my Rose!” Levin raised his voice in anger.

Ruby looked at Levin with deep heartbreak.

This was the man who had confessed his feelings for her. This was the man who said he was her mate. They were going to be married. They would have many children and grow old together.

Yes, all those sweet words were just a false promise.

In reality, it was this man who ended up throwing away his own words. Bragging bastard!

“Does it hurt, Rose? Please show me,” Levin asked anxiously. But he didn’t care that the one in most pain here was Ruby.

This is a dream, right?

Ruby wondered to herself. Her tears wouldn’t stop. To see her mate taken away by her own sister. That was more painful than someone else taking Levin from her.

“I’m fine.” Rose replied in a quiet tone, as if she was helpless.

“I’m sorry, Ruby.”

Suddenly, Rose dramatically hugged Ruby’s leg. She was the one who hurt Ruby, but she acted like she was the one in the most pain.

How disgusting!

“I’m sorry. I promise I’ll get away from Levin. I won’t bother you.”

“You don’t have to do this, Rose!” Levin pulled Rose’s body.

“I have to do this. I don’t want you to get in trouble.” Rose touched Levin’s cheek, worried. But Ruby seemed to want to throw up at Rose’s performance.

“You know everyone loves Ruby, but not me. If Father finds out, I may not live.”

“I won’t let anything happen to you.” Levin hugged Rose tightly.

“Why are you doing this to me?” Ruby asked, tears falling. “Was everything you said all along just a lie?”

“Do you really not love me? Am I really ugly? Am I fat and I look like a pig?” Ruby couldn’t hold back anymore. She felt like pouring out all her broken feelings.

“Tell me, is it all fake?”

“Yes, that’s right.” Levin replied heartlessly.

“It was all a lie from the beginning. I don’t love you at all. The only one I love is Rose.”

Ruby didn’t want to hear any more. She ran, not caring that Levin was screaming her name. She kept running, hoping that this was just a dream and that tomorrow would be normal again.

“WATCH OUT!!!”

A man yanked her along and Ruby felt a huge breeze as a car passed quickly from a few inches away.

Ruby’s legs went weak.

“What’s wrong Ruby? Why are you running without watching the road?” The man’s familiar voice sounded concerned.

“And why are you crying?”

Ruby looked up, her tears falling even more on the figure in front of her.

Henry Miller. Levin's younger brother, but because he was an illegitimate child, his wolf pack looked him down upon. But for Ruby, Henry is her childhood best friend, and they are very close.

“Ruby?” Henry grew worried when Ruby didn’t answer the question. The girl cried even more.

Henry hugged Ruby tightly. “Don’t cry. I’m right here. Calm down.” He gently rubbed Ruby’s head.

“Let go of my mate!” A booming voice filled with anger made Henry turn his head toward the source of the sound.

Levin approached them with an angry expression on his face, as if they had done something wrong.

“You bitch! How dare you be in another man’s arms!"
