The night air stank of blood and burning fur.

Smoke curled through the shattered clearing, rising in lazy plumes into the night sky. Fires crackled where fallen bodies lay, their rogue forms twitching even in death. The metallic tang of blood clung to everything, coating the trees, the soil, even the wind. Distant howls faded into silence, swallowed by the darkness beyond the trees.

Theron stood over the last rogue, his claw buried deep in its chest, ripping through bone and sinew. His eyes glowed with unholy fury, pupils slitted, lips pulled back in a snarl that revealed both fang and wrath. With one final twist, he yanked his arm free, letting the corpse fall in a lifeless heap.

Behind him, Nyx knelt beside Caelum, her breaths shallow and uneven. Her body trembled, not just from pain, but from something deeper. Her limbs were weak, still sizzling from the silver’s cruel touch. The scent of her own scorched skin made her gag. But her mind, her mind was a battlefield ablaze.

“You alright?” Caelum rasped, voice rough as gravel. One of his eyes was swollen shut, blood trickling from a gash at his temple. Despite it all, his gaze was fixed on her, sharp with concern.

She nodded slowly, suppressing a grimace. “More pissed than injured.”

He let out a dry, pained chuckle. “That’s my girl.”

Theron turned, breathing hard, blood dripping from his arms and chest, his chest heaving like a beast barely leashed. His hybrid form began to recede, bones cracking and shifting as he forced himself back into his human self, though nothing about him felt human in that moment. His eyes still burned, wild and dangerous.

And then his gaze landed on her.

In three long strides, he was by her side. He dropped to his knees, grabbed her wrists, and examined the deep burns the silver chains had left. His touch was rough, but trembling.

“What the hell happened to your guards?” he growled.

Nyx yanked her hands back, wincing as skin tore where the flesh had fused. “Don’t you dare shout at me.”

“You went into the woods alone.”

“I wasn’t alone. Caelum was with me.”

“Exactly. One person. And no damn weapon!”

“You’re the one who told me to stop carrying one!” she snapped, her voice rising.

“That was before the rogues got this organized!”

“I tried to fight back.”

“And look where that got you!” he shouted, rising to his feet in frustration. “They almost took you, Nyx!”

“I know!” she roared back, fists clenched, eyes blazing.

Caelum, still sitting awkwardly on the ground, raised a hand weakly. “If I might offer a bit of…”

“Shut up,” both Nyx and Theron snapped in unison.

Caelum sighed. “Right. Carry on.”

Theron turned back to her, his expression no less intense. “They weren’t here by accident. They were waiting. This wasn’t just a rogue patrol, they set a trap.”

Nyx looked up at him, eyes hard. “I know.”

The word hung in the air like a blade.

Theron froze. “What do you mean, you know?”

She pushed herself to sit upright, though her arms trembled with the effort. Smoke still rose from her skin where the silver had scorched it, but she didn’t flinch. Her voice was cold. Steady. “Evander was here.”

The name dropped between them like a thunderclap.

Theron’s fury drained into a dangerous calm. “You’re sure?”

She didn’t blink. “I’d recognize his scent anywhere. It’s burned into me.”

A silence fell. Caelum stiffened.

“His voice,” she continued, quieter now. “I heard it when the rogues dragged me into the trees. He wasn’t hiding. He wanted me to know it was him.”

Theron turned away, jaw clenched so tight it looked like it might snap. He paced a few steps, then stopped, shoulders tight with tension.

“How did he know where you’d be?” he asked at last.

Nyx shook her head. “I don’t know. But this wasn’t random. He came himself, Theron. Not through his warlocks or his mutts. Himself. That means he thinks you’re weak.”

The words landed like knives. Theron flinched, barely, but Nyx saw it.

He was silent for a long moment.

Then, in a voice barely above a whisper, he said, “He’s right.”

Caelum stirred. “What the hell are you talking about?”

Theron slowly turned back to them. His eyes weren’t glowing now, but they held something worse. Defeat.

“I lost my link to the Moon Goddess,” he said quietly. “Weeks ago. The emerald crest was stolen from me.”

Nyx stared at him. “You what?”

“I’ve been trying to retrieve it before anyone found out. If the Alpha Council hears, they’ll challenge me. I’ll lose my seat as Alpha King.”

“And you didn’t think to tell us?” Caelum said, staggering to his feet.

“I couldn’t risk it,” Theron said. “Not when the Council is already suspicious. Not when every border is being tested. Evander knew. Somehow, he knew. That’s why he’s moving now.”

Nyx’s heart pounded. Her blood was ice in her veins. “You’ve been fighting without the blessing of the Goddess?”

“I have no choice,” he said. “Until I get it back.”

“Well, you took too long,” she spat. “He already made his move.”

A long silence fell again. This one felt heavier. Final.

Caelum exhaled and looked around at the devastation. “We need to move. This place isn’t safe anymore. Not for her. Not for any of us.”

Theron turned his gaze back to Nyx.

“I’m increasing your guard. No arguments. I want two warriors on you at all times. Round the clock.”

She narrowed her eyes. “I’m not your prisoner, Theron.”

“You’re not,” he said, stepping closer again, lowering his voice. “But you’re mine.”

That stopped her.

His hand brushed a strand of blood-matted hair from her face. “And I will burn the world down before I let him take you again.”

Her breath caught in her throat, but she shoved the emotion down quickly. She hated how easily he got under her skin. How her pulse reacted to his presence, even when her soul wanted vengeance.

“I’m not afraid of him anymore,” she said firmly, chin raised.

“Good,” Theron replied. “But fear isn’t the problem.”

“What is, then?”

His voice dropped, eyes shadowed.

“He’s coming for all of us.”

  • The Luna’s Revenge    Three graves

The council chamber was filled when Nyx and Theron entered it that morning.Every Alpha was seated and waiting, their faces showing various degrees of sympathy and political calculation. Nyx felt their eyes on her as she took her seat beside Theron’s throne, and through the bond she felt his steady presence anchoring her.Darius stood when everyone was settled, his expression carefully neutral.“Alpha King, Luna,” Darius said. “The council extends its deepest condolences for your loss. We know this is a difficult time.”“Thank you,” Theron said, his voice flat and emotionless.“However,” Darius continued, choosing his words carefully, “the matter of succession cannot be delayed indefinitely. The Northern region needs stability. It needs to know that the Alpha King’s line will continue.”“Then it will be disappointed,” Theron said coldly. “Because the Luna and I are not producing more children.”The chamber fell into heavy silence. Several Alphas exchanged glances, clearly not expectin

  • The Luna’s Revenge    Grove

Morning came three days after Aria’s burial, and Nyx woke knowing she had to return to the grove. She’d barely left their rooms since the funeral, couldn’t face the corridors of the residence or the eyes of the wolves who lived in Ashville or the weight of everything that had happened. Theron had stayed close, neither of them speaking much, just existing in the space where their daughter should have been. Through the bond she felt his grief matching hers, felt him trying to hold himself together while falling apart at the same time. But the grove was calling to her, the three small graves beneath the oak tree pulling at her like a physical weight, and she knew she couldn’t avoid them any longer. “I need to go back,” Nyx said quietly, and Theron nodded without asking where she meant because he already knew through the bond. “I’ll come with you,” Theron said. They dressed in silence and walked through the residence toward the forest. It was early enough that few wolves were awake,

  • The Luna’s Revenge    Preparation

Night fell and Nyx couldn’t leave the grove.Theron had tried to get her to come back to the residence after they’d finished filling in Aria’s grave, had told her gently that she needed rest and food and time away from the three mounds of earth that held everything they’d lost. But Nyx couldn’t make herself move, couldn’t make herself walk away from her children even though she knew staying wouldn’t change anything.“Please,” Theron said quietly as the last light faded from the sky. “Come back with me. We can return tomorrow.”“You go,” Nyx said. “I need to stay here a little longer.”Through the bond she felt his reluctance to leave her alone, felt him weighing whether to insist or to give her the space she was asking for. Eventually he nodded and stood, telling Caelum and Elara to return to the residence while he stayed with Nyx.When they were alone, Theron sat down beside her and they both looked at the graves in silence. The moon was rising through the trees, casting pale light o

  • The Luna’s Revenge    Aftermath

Nyx held Aria’s body for hours after she died, unable to let go even though she knew she should. The small form had grown cold in her arms, the warmth that had radiated from her feverish body during the night fading until there was nothing left but the terrible stillness of death. Aria’s face was peaceful, her tiny features relaxed, and if Nyx didn’t look too closely she could almost pretend her daughter was just sleeping. But the chest that had struggled so hard to breathe didn’t rise and fall anymore, and the small hands that had clenched into fists when she cried lay open and motionless.Theron sat beside her on the bed, one hand on Nyx’s shoulder, and through the bond she felt his grief matching hers. It was different from the grief they’d shared after Lyra and Kael, sharper somehow, more devastating because they’d had Aria. They’d held her while she was alive, had fed her and soothed her and loved her for eight days. Eight days of hope and fear and the desperate belief that maybe

  • The Luna’s Revenge    Fading

By nightfall, Aria’s condition had worsened. Her temperature continued to climb despite the cooling cloths Elara applied, and her breathing became more labored with each passing hour. The strange high-pitched crying had given way to weak whimpers, and Nyx held her daughter close, feeling the heat radiating from her tiny body and knowing with horrible certainty that they were losing her. “What’s happening to her?” Theron asked, his voice raw with fear and helplessness. “I don’t know,” Elara said honestly, her hands moving over Aria’s small form with practiced efficiency. “Her lungs sound congested, like she’s fighting some kind of infection. But she was fine this morning. Babies don’t decline this fast from normal illness.” “The curse,” Nyx said flatly. “This is the curse. The moon goddess said any child born of my body would be tainted. This is how it’s manifesting.” Elara didn’t argue, just kept working, preparing herbs and tinctures that might help with the fever and the breath

  • The Luna’s Revenge    Watching

The first day with Aria was the longest day of Nyx’s life. She held her daughter almost constantly, afraid that putting her down would somehow jinx whatever miracle had allowed her to be born breathing. The baby nursed weakly at first, her tiny mouth struggling to latch onto Nyx’s breast, but Elara helped guide them both through it and eventually Aria figured it out. When she did latch properly, she fed with surprising determination for someone so small, her little fists clenching and unclenching against Nyx’s skin. “She’s doing well,” Elara said after examining the baby thoroughly that first afternoon. “Breathing is steady, heart rate is good, color is healthy. Everything looks exactly as it should for a full-term baby.” “Finally,” Nyx said, and felt Theron’s hand tighten on her shoulder. Through the bond she felt his relief matching her own, felt him wanting to believe that finally meant they were safe, that the curse had been defeated. But Nyx couldn’t quite let herself believe

They dragged her through the forest like she was already dead. Nyx’s boots carved twin furrows in the earth as Evander’s warriors hauled her between them, her body still weak from the dark magic that had pinned her to the ground at Thornridge. The trees blurred past, their ancient branches reachin

Outside, Evander’s voice boomed again across the pack lands. “You have one hour, Nyx Knight. One hour to surrender yourself, or I start killing your wolves.
