Chapter 18

Our night meal came in, getting slid beneath the bars. I took it, eating my food silently.

"So how'd the interrogation go?" Yvonne asked, picking at her food.

Nodding, I shrugged. "Okay." Terrible. I didn't know if I'd been able to convince Hick into believing I was innocent, or just managed to make things worse for myself.

"Alright." Yvonne took a bite of her bread, scrunching up her face. "I don't know why I expect it to taste different each time."

I let out a laugh. The sound was alien even to my own ears, and I realized it was the closest I've come to being happy since arriving here. My joy, however, died as soon as the steel doors were pushed open.

Three guards poured in this time, heading over to our cell. Yvonne slowly dropped her meal, her mouth opened halfway. "What's the damn occasion..."

The clattering of keys sounded and soon the bars were slid open. A clang rang out once it hit the end of the wall.
